China's top diplomat Wang to visit India for border talks

Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India on Delhi's invitation from Monday (Aug 18) until Wednesday. - Photo: AP BEIJING (AFP): China's top diplomat will visit India next week for talks about their shared boundary, Beijing's foreign ministry said on Saturday, as the two countries consider resuming border trade after a five-year halt. Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India on Delhi's invitation from Monday (Aug 18) until Wednesday for "the 24th special representatives meeting on the China-India border issue", a spokesperson said in a statement. Past trade between the neighbours across icy, high-altitude Himalayan border passes was usually small in volume, but any resumption is significant for its symbolism. It stopped following a deadly 2020 clash between border troops. Indian media reported this week that Wang was expected for talks in New Delhi on Monday. He will meet Indian national security adviser Ajit Doval, New Delhi's foreign ministry confirmed in a statement on Saturday. Wang will also hold talks with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who visited Beijing in July, the statement said. The two major economic powers have long competed for strategic influence across South Asia. However, they have moved to mend ties after being caught up in global trade and geopolitical turbulence triggered by US President Donald Trump's tariff blitz. Chinese and Indian officials have said in recent weeks that the two countries were discussing the resumption of border trade. Agreements to resume direct flights and issue tourist visas have also been seen as part of an effort to rebuild their relationship. - AFP

Enterprises urged to explore potential of Sabah's green energy

The participants of the Green Energy and Finance Forum. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 16): Sabah-China Chamber of Commerce president Datuk Frankie Liew emphasized that the world is now moving towards green transformation and sustainable development. He encouraged Chinese and Sabah enterprises to actively explore the potential of Sabah's green energy to align with the global low-carbon trend. 'Green finance, on the other hand, provides financial support and investment opportunities. When combined, they not only give trade new value but also create unlimited potential for Sabah's future,' he said at the Green Energy and Finance Forum on Saturday. The Sabah-China Chamber of Commerce organized the Green Energy and Finance Seminar at its Kolombong headquarters. Industry representatives were invited to share the latest developments and services. The keynote speakers included Ir. Jess Vun from JV Consultant, Ir. Lo Yi Bang from SW Green Energy Technology, and Vivien Liew Ping Ching, representing Hong Leong Bank's Green Energy Financing division. The seminar began with Vun's presentation on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), followed by Lo's presentation on Green Energy Technology in Sabah. The final session was presented by Hong Leong Bank, introducing its green energy financing services. Liew said that since its establishment in 2019, the Chamber has been committed to promoting economic, trade, industrial and commercial cooperation between Sabah and China. In recent years, apart from traditional trade and investment, the Chamber has actively responded to national and state government policies by promoting green energy, new technologies and emerging industries. It has also hosted many experts and enterprises from China, helping them explore investment opportunities in Sabah. He pointed out that the Chamber not only provides policy updates, investment guides, and trade resources but also effectively builds a bridge for Sabah-China cooperation through various platforms such as expos, economic forums, seminars, and training programs. 'This coming November, we will be hosting the 2025 Sabah-China Expo at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), where multiple thematic seminars are planned. We warmly welcome the participation of stakeholders from the green energy and finance sectors,' said Liew. 'We very much look forward to collaborating with SW Green Energy Technology and JV Consultant in the fields of green energy supply and ESG to jointly promote sustainable development. At the same time, we also hope to leverage Hong Leong Bank's green energy financing solutions to help our members strengthen their capabilities in financing, wealth management, and investment,' he said. He stressed that this seminar was not only a platform for information exchange but also an important opportunity to lay a solid foundation for future cooperation. The Chamber welcomes more committed partners to work hand-in-hand in driving Sabah's economic growth. The seminar concluded successfully in a lively atmosphere, with participants showing great interest in green energy and related financial services and expressing anticipation for deeper cooperation in the future. Also present were the Chamber's Vice Presidents: Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP, Vice President and Women Entrepreneurs' Chairlady Tan Siew Ling, Treasurer Chung Zheng Uyee, as well as Ling Hang Tze, Chan Jun Git, Cheong Siau Ling, Nice Chu, Kelvin Chin and Lo Yu Foh.

China's top diplomat to visit India for border talks

BEIJING, Aug 16 — China's top diplomat will visit India next week for talks about their shared boundary, Beijing's foreign ministry said today, as the two countries eye resuming border trade five years after halting it. 'From August 18 to 20...
