Receiver Terry McLaurin skips Commanders minicamp while looking for a new contract
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Terry McLaurin is not at Washington Commanders mandatory minicamp as the team's top wide receiver looks for a new contract. McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, is only signed through the next NFL season. 'Hey, sometimes football and business, they intersect and this is one of those times,' coach Dan Quinn said Tuesday. 'Terry is a fantastic teammate and really puts in the work, and we spent a lot of time with him already this offseason.' McLaurin has surpassed 1,000 yards receiving each of the past five seasons and fell only 81 short in his rookie year because he missed games because of an injury. A third-round pick in 2019 out of Ohio State who dealt with quarterback roulette for the quite some time after breaking into the league, McLaurin set career highs with 82 catches and 13 touchdowns with Jayden Daniels as the starter and Marcus Mariota the backup. Quinn downplayed McLaurin not being there, saying the good news is the wideout and QBs have already established strong rapport. He's leaving the negotiating part to general manager Adam Peters. 'The business side of things, Adam and their crew and Terry and his group, let them work through that,' Quinn said. 'But in the meantime, lots of stuff to do.' ___ AP NFL:

Dan Quinn Sends Message To Veteran-Laden Commanders Roster
Dan Quinn Sends Message To Veteran-Laden Commanders Roster originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It took a single season for Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn to turn his team into a winner. They reached the conference finals for the first time in three decades after a 12-win regular season. Advertisement An underrated part of Washington's success last year came thanks to key veteran pickups on both sides of the ball. Veterans like linebacker Bobby Wagner, tight end Zach Ertz, center Tyler Biadasz, and many others were brought in to establish a winning culture for Washington. They certainly did that and more in 2024. Now comes the even harder part - sustaining that success. Speaking to reporters at OTAs, Quinn made it clear exactly what he expects from his veteran-laden roster. "One of the main things for the players starting off to be here, can you be an awesome teammate, top of the pile," Quinn said. "Then it gets into your role, what that can mean, how good can you get at these specific things? And then we go from there but it has to be, man, being a great teammate first. Advertisement "How do you show that to one another because not everybody's outspoken or not giving each other greeting cards every day, but there's spaces that you fill in that you're helping one another see how good you can get." Chemistry matters a great deal to a coach like Quinn. He has seen teams win games because it is there, and vice versa. It's a similar kind of messaging the coach gave this roster last season when they were first getting started together. If the Commanders want to be Super Bowl contenders, then the rest of the roster better follow Quinn's 'greeting card' commands for 2025. Why Commanders' 'Nightmare' Scenario In 2025 Isn't Really Bad
Why Commanders' 'Nightmare' Scenario In 2025 Isn't Really Bad originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Washington Commanders' quarterback Jayden Daniels had a phenomenal rookie season, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, and leading his team to a 12-5 record and an NFC Championship appearance. Advertisement That is quite a lofty bar to reach in Year 2, but such was how the Commanders overall played, along with the coaching staff led by Dan Quinn, went about their business; more is expected in 2025. Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil were signed, and now the offense is loaded. So there are big expectations on Washington in Daniels' second year, but in what Bleacher Report calls a nightmare season, Jayden pulls a C.J. Stroud from 2024. "If Jayden Daniels pulls a C.J. Stroud from 2024," Bleacher Report writes. Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels© Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Right, let's go through this. Stroud, in his second season, won one more regular-season game, still made the playoffs as division winner, threw slightly fewer yards (4,108 to 3,727), had three fewer passing touchdowns (23 to 20), and seven more interceptions (five to 12). His passer rating dropped from 100.8 to 87.0, and QBR dropped from 57.5 to 49.8. Advertisement So yes, Stroud regressed a little, yet still won a playoff game and the division, but we know that success in the NFL isn't linear. Now, looking at Jayden. Last season, he threw for 3,568 yards, 25 touchdowns, nine interceptions, had a passer rating of 100.1, and a QBB of 70.6. That will be hard to replicate. The win total will likely decrease, but still winning 10 games is a commendable achievement. If his stats decline exactly like Stroud's, he will have 3,187 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions (which isn't ideal). He would have a passer rating of 86.3 and a QBR of 62.9. Stroud had more rushing yards in his second season (167 to 233) while Daniels, who posted 891 yards and six touchdowns, might see that come down a touch. Advertisement If Daniels does regress slightly as Stroud did, we aren't sure it would be the "nightmare" scenario some think it might be. After all, Jayden has set the bar so high that it will be tough to reach those heights consistently, and if he doesn't, we aren't sure if it is the end of the world.
