Celebrities are not putting enough care into their children's books, says author
The novelist, who won Waterstones Book Of The Year in 2023, said that 'a high percentage' of books published by famous people could have been ghost-written, estimating that the figure could fall just below 50%.
'I think the thing that frustrates me most would be where people are publishing books that they have not themselves written,' she told BBC Radio 4's This Cultural Life.
'Because, of course, there are many great comedians who could write great children's fiction, I'm sure, but if you are creating a children's book in the same way you would create a perfume or a series of steak knives, you are not giving it sufficient care.'

She added: 'I think ghost-writing makes perfect sense for memoir, for non-fiction, but for fiction, when a child opens a story they should be entering a pact with you, that you will have thought of them and what they need, their desires, their drive.
'And if you break that pact, and if you flood the market with books that break that pact, you risk turning children off books.
'And to turn children off books is to turn them off the great history of ideas. Books are the place we have gone to set down our most bold and ambitious thought and to risk turning children off that, I think, is a stupidity for which we shouldn't be forgiven.'
Asked, anecdotally, if she knows the proportion of children's books that are ghost-written, she said: 'I don't know. A high percentage, probably less than half, but not that much less.'
Rundell won the Costa Children's Book Award in 2017 for her book The Explorer and the Blue Peter Best Story Award in 2014 for Rooftoppers.
Her other children's books include One Christmas Wish (2017), Skysteppers (2021), and her forthcoming book The Poisoned King, a follow-up to Impossible Creatures (2023).

Former Countdown star Carol, 64, was perplexed by a Jack Black question in a round called Cinema Cipher. Host Jeremy Vine explained the rules, saying: "I show you a well-known film title concealed by a code of symbols. Just give me the title of the film." Carol and her teammate Ore Oduba were shown a selection of animal images. Each one corresponded to letters that in turn spelled a Jack B;ack film title. Some image examples included a snake, two squirrels and four butterflies. As the two pondered over what it could be, Strictly star Ore asked Carol if she knew any Jack Black movies. Unfortunately for their effort, the TV legend replied that she did not. They opted to take a clue - with one of the letters being revealed to them. The pair then discovered each of the butterflies represented the letter O. Musician 'emotional' after arriving at Glastonbury following 650-mile bike ride
Jack Cullen, who lives in north-west London, embarked on the cycling trip from Edinburgh to the famous festival with his childhood friend George 'GK' Kershaw, 33, on May 30. He told the PA news agency: 'It feels amazing and somewhat emotional in a way. 'I think these things are always, you forget what you're doing during it, and then you realise 'Oh, we've just been doing this for the last month, and now we're here'. 'And it's kind of as simple as that. So it feels, overall, it just feels really, really, really good.' Cullen, 30, said the pair have faced 'horrendous wind and rain' in the past month but joked that his Birkenstocks have held up. Along the route, which took him through areas including the Lake District, Manchester and Liverpool, he performed in quirky venues, including a sauna, and also held an intimate gig for one of his most loyal fans. He told PA: 'We went over to Liverpool, played a little gig, to one fan in particular actually, who always comes to my shows, drives down from Liverpool to London. 'So I cycled four hours to go meet him and play him some of the new tunes face to face. So that was a really, really special one.' While in the Lake District he shot a music video for his new single with RCA Records, All I Need, and said he almost lost a drone and had to hike up a mountain 'for a few hours' to retrieve it. Cullen's friend did not have a ticket for the festival when they set off, but the singer-songwriter says he has now gained entry with the stipulation he must 'do a few bits of work'. Before he embarked on a career in music, Cullen was a professional rugby player and represented Ireland in the U20 World Cup and Six Nations. In 2016, a series of injuries, such as damaging his shoulder and tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, left him bedbound, which is when he picked up his guitar and began writing music.
