Fauji Fertilizer keen in acquiring stake in PIA
In a disclosure to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), FFC revealed that its Board of Directors, during their recent meeting, approved the submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI) and prequalification documents to the Privatization Commission of Pakistan. This strategic move signals FFC's growing interest in participating in the ongoing privatization process of state-owned enterprises, particularly the financially troubled national airline.
The board also sanctioned a comprehensive due diligence exercise to thoroughly assess PIACL's financial, operational, and legal standing before any final investment decision. The official disclosure was signed by Brig Khurram Shahzada (Retd), Company Secretary of FFC, and filed in accordance with Sections 96 and 131 of the Securities Act, 2015, and Clause 5.6.1 of the PSX Rule Book.
Pakistan's Fauji Fertilizer seeks entry into aviation, eyes PIA acquisition
Industry analysts view this cross-sector interest as a bold diversification strategy for one of Pakistan's leading fertilizer manufacturers. If it proceeds, it would mark a rare entry of an agro-sector giant into the aviation industry, potentially setting a precedent for other corporates to explore similar opportunities.
This development comes as the federal government accelerates efforts to privatize loss-making state-owned enterprises under its broader economic reform agenda. PIACL, burdened by mounting debts, operational inefficiencies, and persistent financial losses, has remained on the privatization list for several years.
A previous privatization attempt in late 2024 collapsed after receiving only one bid of Rs?10 billion, far below the government's reserve price of Rs?85 billion. Investor confidence was undermined by PIACL's heavy debt burden, an 18 percent sales tax on new aircraft, and a lack of clear financial safeguards. The failed effort cost the exchequer $4.3 million in advisory fees and forced the government to reassess its strategy before re-launching the process in early 2025.
As part of its renewed privatization push, the federal budget for 2025–26 introduced a major incentive, granting GST exemptions on aircraft imports and leases, effective retroactively from March 19, 2015. The waiver covers complete aircraft (purchased or leased), spare parts, maintenance kits, simulators, engines, and key Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) equipment. This broad tax relief aims to ease PIACL's financial burden, improve operational capacity, and enhance its appeal to private investors.
Market observers believe that FFC's interest could inject much-needed momentum into the privatization drive and encourage other institutional investors. In its commentary, AKD Securities noted that this follows the government's major restructuring of the national carrier, carving out net liabilities of PKR 654 billion and non-core assets into PIA Holding Company Ltd. (Holdco) — effectively transforming PIACL into a debt-light entity. Notably, the airline was EBITDA-positive in CY24, with a reported equity value of PKR 3.6 billion as of December 2024. With PKR 147 billion in cash and short-term investments on a standalone basis as of March 2025, FFC possesses the financial strength to pursue such a transaction, analysts added.
The government's decision to privatize PIACL arises from years of financial losses, mismanagement, overstaffing, an aging fleet, and persistent operational challenges.

PSX extends rally as Supreme Court admits Imran Khan bail pleas
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a sharp reversal on Thursday as early gains were wiped out by intensive selling, triggered by renewed political uncertainty. The benchmark KSE-100 index, which had climbed to the intra-day high of 151,250 points, tumbled later, hitting the low of 148,273. It closed the day at 149,235, down 1,356 points, or 0.90%. The sell-off emerged after the Supreme Court granted bail to former prime minister Imran Khan in May 9 cases, which sparked uncertainty about the political outlook. Major pressure came from index-heavy sectors such as commercial banks, cement and fertiliser, which endured broad-based selling. AKD Securities Director Research Mohammed Awais Ashraf told The Express Tribune that investor sentiment turned cautious amid political uncertainty following the Supreme Court's acceptance of Imran Khan's bail plea in May 9 cases. 'Nevertheless, we expect falling interest rates amid the improving macroeconomic backdrop and stability in exchange rate to sustain the rally in equities,' he commented and mentioned that the KSE-100 delivered a 29% return this year. Read: SC grants Imran's bail in eight May 9 cases KTrade Securities wrote in its market wrap that the benchmark KSE-100 index started trading on a positive note but selling pressure emerged in the latter half following approval of Imran Khan's bail by the Supreme Court. Consequently, the index dropped to intra-day low of 148,273 (-2,318 points) from intra-day high of 151,250 (+659 points) and closed in the negative territory at 149,235 (-1,356 points). Selling was observed in index-heavy sectors including commercial banks, cement and fertiliser, which contributed 818 points, 187 points and 128 points to the losses, AKD said. Arif Habib Limited Deputy Head of Trading Ali Najib commented that after three consecutive winning sessions, the PSX finally faced a wave of profit-taking that dragged the KSE-100 into the red. The day began on a strong footing, with the index touching intra-day high of 151,250, reflecting bullish momentum. However, political noise shifted the mood following media reports about the former PM securing bail. It triggered volatility and wiped out early gains, sending the market into a sharp downturn, he said. Yet, the storm settled quickly as clarification that the ex-premier would remain behind bars helped calm sentiment. 'It was a session where politics overshadowed fundamentals, turning optimism into caution, but late recovery hinted at underlying resilience in investor confidence,' Najib remarked. Overall trading volumes increased to 1.1 billion shares compared with Wednesday's tally of 667.8 million. Traded value stood at Rs55.8 billion. Shares of 480 companies were traded. Of these, 130 advanced, 323 dropped and 27 remained unchanged. Fauji Foods was volume leader with trading in 62.1 million shares, gaining Rs0.52 to close at Rs16.94.

Profit-taking grips PSX, KSE-100 sheds over 1,300 points
After a strong start, profit-taking gripped the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday, erasing early gains as the benchmark KSE-100 settled with a loss of over 1,300 points. Trading kicked off on a positive note with the benchmark index hitting an intra-day high of 151,249.62. However, the market resorted to profit-taking, dragging the KSE-100 Index down to 148,272.57. At close, the benchmark index settled at 149,235.26, a loss of 1,355.74 points or 0.90%. Sana Tawfik, Head of Research at Arif Habib Limited, said the decline is largely attributable to profit-taking after a recent rally. Despite the intraday dip, Tawfik emphasised that overall market sentiment remains positive, supported by the ongoing corporate result season and expectations surrounding a potential circular debt resolution. Investors are closely monitoring earnings announcements from key listed companies. Meanwhile, Waqas Ghani, Head of Research at JS Global, said 'some profit-taking is natural' after recent gains. On Wednesday, the PSX advanced further into record territory, as the benchmark KSE-100 Index closed at an all-time high of 150,591.00 points, gaining 820 points or 0.55%. Globally, Asian stock markets were broadly mixed on Thursday. Japan's Nikkei dropped 0.6% in the morning session, retreating further from the record peak reached on Tuesday. Despite a tech-led selloff on Wall Street overnight, Japanese chip stocks were a mixed bag, with Advantest up 3% while Tokyo Electron dropped 2%. South Korea's KOSPI bounced 0.9% after dipping to a six-week low on Wednesday. Australia's benchmark gained 0.6% and renewed an all-time high. Mainland Chinese blue chips gained 0.5%, although Hong Kong's Hang Seng was largely flat. US stock futures pointed lower, with Nasdaq futures sagging 0.2% and S&P 500 futures easing 0.1%. Overnight, the Nasdaq Composite slid 0.7% and the S&P 500 cash index slipped 0.2%. Traders currently lay odds of about 80% for a quarter-point Fed rate cut on September 17, and price in a total of 52 basis points of easing over the rest of the year. Pakistan tyre maker commissions 2.5MW solar power system at manufacturing facility
Panther Tyres Limited, a Pakistani tyre maker, has commissioned a 2.5MW solar power system at its manufacturing facility, marking a significant step toward renewable energy adoption. The listed company disclosed the development in its notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday. 'We are pleased to inform you that Panther Tyres Limited has successfully commissioned a 2.5MW solar power system at its manufacturing facility,' read the notice. The company was of the view that the commissioning would strengthen its energy mix by meeting a considerable portion of its power requirements through clean and renewable sources. 'The initiative reaffirms Panther Tyres commitment to environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, operational cost savings, and responsible corporate citizenship,' it added. There has been a growing shift towards alternative energy sources in Pakistan, especially solar, which has become increasingly popular among residential and commercial sectors. This rising trend has left decision-makers grappling with its implications for the national grid and energy sector, as electricity consumption remains stagnant. Nonetheless, several projects have been initiated to exploit this relatively cheaper energy source. Earlier this month, Kohinoor Mills Limited (KML) announced plans of installing a 7.2-megawatt solar power system as part of its push for sustainable operations and cost efficiency. Dewan Cement Limited successfully commissioned a 6 MW solar power system at its manufacturing facility in Karachi. In May, International Steels Limited (ISL), a subsidiary of International Industries Limited, completed and activated a 6.4-megawatt (MW) solar power project at its factory in Karachi. In March, Tariq Corporation Limited (TCORP), engaged in the manufacturing of sugar and its by-products, announced plans to set up a 200KW solar power system at its facility.
