Eastern Ukraine in exchange for peace?: Vladimir Putin's demand ahead of Alaska meeting with Donald Trump
Is Vladimir Putin ready to end the war in exchange for eastern Ukraine?
US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska on August 15 to discuss ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, with Trump acting as a negotiator for a possible peace deal.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Putin is prepared to agree to a ceasefire if Ukraine and Nato withdraw from eastern Ukraine.
Quoting European and Ukrainian officials, the report says the Kremlin wants control over eastern Ukraine and global recognition of its claims in exchange for ending the fighting.
Moscow is demanding four provinces - Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.
Trump, speaking at a briefing, said any peace deal would likely involve territory swaps.
"But we're gonna get some [territory] back. We're gonna get some switched. There'll be some swapping of territories, to the betterment of both," he said, without giving more details.
He also added, "President Putin I believe wants to see peace."
On Truth Social, Trump posted: "The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin of Russia will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
This will be the first US-Russia summit since 2021, when then-President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva.

‘Donald Trump is a clown, but…': Garry Kasparov warns Narendra Modi about friendship with Vladimir Putin
Chess legend Garry Kasparov, a staunch critic of Russian president Vladimir Putin, on Friday warned India PM Narendra Modi about trusting Putin, who he said 'would sell out Modi and the entire Indian nation at any time to prolong his dictatorship'. This was after Modi had posted a tweet about his and Putin's conversation about strengthening the India-Russia ties. 'Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine. We also reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda, and reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year. @KremlinRussia_E' Modi posted on X. Kasparov quote-tweeted that post and said, 'Your friend Vladimir Putin? The genocidal war criminal? Your friend who would sell out you and the entire Indian nation at any time to prolong his dictatorship by one more hour? With friends like that, who needs democracy? Trump is a clown, but stand for something better.' Your friend Vladimir Putin? The genocidal war criminal? Your friend who would sell out you and the entire Indian nation at any time to prolong his dictatorship by one more hour? With friends like that, who needs democracy? Trump is a clown, but stand for something better. — Garry Kasparov (@Kasparov63) August 8, 2025 Amid the tension in ties with the US after President Donald Trump doubled the tariff on India over its purchase of Russian oil, Modi and Putin held a phone conversation on Friday during which they discussed 'the latest developments on Ukraine' and 'reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership'. Modi said he looked forward to hosting Putin in India later this year. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who travelled to Moscow this week and met Putin, had also said that the President would be visiting India. The Kremlin, meanwhile, issued a statement indicating a likely meeting between Putin and Trump next week over the war in Ukraine. The Modi-Putin conversation took place three days after Russia criticised Trump's tariff action and backed India's right to choose its trading partners. 'Sovereign countries have the right to choose their own trading partners,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

'Over 200 arrested': London police crackdown on supporters of a pro-Palestinian group; protesters call it free speech violation
Demonstrators hold placards during a protest in support of the Palestinian People in Gaza in Parliament Square in London (AP image) London police have arrested around 200 people after demonstrators openly defied a new law banning public support for a pro-Palestinian group, 'Palestine Action' arguing the legislation unfairly restricts freedom of expression. In a post on X, the Metropolitan Police said, "We have now made 200 arrests in Parliament Square this afternoon. " The arrests comes after earlier officers had arrested 150 people after finding several protesters displaying placards in support of the Palestine Action, which was outlawed in July and classified as a terrorist organization. 'Within this crowd a significant number of people are displaying placards expressing support for Palestine Action, which is a proscribed group,' the post read. 'Officers have moved in and are making arrests.' Home secretary Yvette Cooper imposed a ban on the organization following a June 20 incident in which activists from the group Palestine Action broke into a British air force base in southern England to protest the UK's support for Israel in its war with Hamas. They sprayed red paint into the engines of two large planes and damaged them further using crowbars. On Saturday, protesters gathered outside Parliament holding signs such as 'I oppose genocide. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Europe Travel Hack That Saves You Hundreds on Trips! Undo I support Palestine Action,' prompting police to intervene. Supporters of the group are challenging the ban in court, claiming it dangerously broadens the definition of terrorism and undermines democratic freedoms. 'Once the meaning of 'terrorism' is separated from campaigns of violence against a civilian population, and extended to include those causing economic damage or embarrassment to the rich, the powerful and the criminal, then the right to freedom of expression has no meaning and democracy is dead,' the pro-Palestine group 'Defend Our Juries' said on its website. The arrests come during a weekend of heightened demonstrations in London. Pro-Palestinian marches are planned, including one ending at Downing Street, while on Sunday, rallies will call for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Protests related to immigration, including outside hotels housing asylum seekers, are also expected. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan said the scale of the events would 'put pressure' on the police department. 'This is going to be a particularly busy few days in London with many simultaneous protests and events that will require a significant policing presence,' Adelekan said before the protests began.
