Students' unions demand A.P. government to conduct elections in educational institutions
In a press conference at MCA Bhavan in Ongole on Thursday, PDSU State vice-president L. Rajasekhar demanded the State government to conduct elections for student unions in educational institutions. He strongly criticised the government for allegedly trying to control student unions that have been fighting uncompromisingly for the rights and welfare of students for the last 70 years.
Calling the circular 'undemocratic', he said, 'No matter which government is in power, student unions will selflessly fight for the problems of the students. Right to Education Act was brought due to our struggles. We want proper teachers in government educational institutions, own buildings and labs, funds for the mid-day meal scheme and jobs for the students who completed their studies.'
'Is it wrong to question the government on the private and corporate educational institutions that are collecting exorbitant fees, as well as thousands of rupees for books, shoes, belts, ties, and others from the students? Is it not necessary to control the mushrooming schools without recognition,' asked SFI State vice-president CH. Vinod Kumar.
'Shouldn't we question if the students in corporate educational institutions are being forced to commit suicide for various reasons? They are saying that students should not be involved in politics. Is politics in the State confined to only Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Lokesh, and few other families?' he questioned.
'The existence of student unions does not harm any student, they act as intermediaries between the government and students. They work for the welfare of students. The circular issued by the government to control the student organisations should be immediately revoked,' the SFI leaders demanded.

MSF dismisses SFI's allegations over students' union polls
Muslim Students Federation (MSF) State president P.K. Navas has dismissed allegations levelled by Students Federation of India (SFI) State secretary P.S. Sanjeev and SFI former State secretary P.M. Arsho related to the victory of the candidates of the MSF and its ally, the Kerala Students Union (KSU), in the recently held elections to the students' union of the University of Calicut and Kannur University. Mr. Navas told the media here on Sunday (August 17) that the SFI leaders' claim that the MSF had managed to win these polls with the help of university union councillors (UUC) 'elected from Arabic colleges' was untrue. He said that the MSF has UUCs and union functionaries in government and aided colleges in Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Palakkad districts on its own and in alliance with the KSU. Mr. Navas also criticised the bid to portray Arabic colleges with alleged racial overtones, pointing out that they had been affiliated with the University of Calicut and were run according to the university laws and government guidelines. About the SFI leaders' claim that the MSF was becoming too close to the student organisations of the Jamaat-e-Islami and the banned Popular Front of India, Mr. Navas showed photographs and videos of SFI leaders joining hands with the same groups in college union polls in the recent past. He also alleged that a candidate of the Campus Front of India, the PFI's students' wing, got elected as UUC from a college in Malappuram some years ago with the help of the SFI.

Lineman electrocuted in UP; family protests
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Kannauj (UP), Aug 16 (PTI) A 24-year-old contractual lineman died in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj after an electric shock and his family members staged a protest by placing the body at the Tirwa electricity substation, officials said on Saturday. The incident occurred on Friday in Kannauj's Pungra village when Brajesh Rathore, an electricity department lineman, took a shutdown to repair the power line, but as soon as he climbed the pole, the power supply started, and he got an electric shock, they said. He was taken to Government Medical College Tirwa, where doctors declared him dead, police said. The deceased's family members took his body to Tirwa Power House, where they blocked the road. The crowd kept creating a ruckus for two hours. During the traffic jam, police arrived at the scene and attempted to persuade the family members involved, but they refused to cooperate. They tried to remove the body forcefully, leading to a scuffle between the people who had blocked the road and the police. Women also clashed with police personnel. The police chased away the crowd with lathis and restored order after three hours. Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar said Rathore, a resident of Thathiya, died due to an electric shock. After this, the family members created a ruckus by placing the body at the Tirwa power house, and some miscreants also pelted stones at the police vehicle, due to which the glass of the car broke. Some police personnel have also been injured, Kumar said, adding that the miscreants will be identified, and action will be taken. Kannauj MP and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over the lineman's death. In a post on X, he said, 'The death of an electrician in Kannauj due to electrocution is unfortunate. In such a sensitive environment of grief, the way the police have behaved with the public and especially with the woman, is very objectionable. The guilty policemen should be suspended, and punitive action should also be taken." 'We demand that a compensation of Rs 1 crore be given to the victim's family. Along with this, there is also a demand that an investigation should be done to find out the reason for the electrocution, so that such accidents do not occur in the future. MKU college increases fees by 10% annually, students hit
MADURAI: Students of Madurai Kamaraj University College in Tallakulam have appealed to the state government to regularise fees, saying the college has been increasing it by 10% every year based on the syndicate decision. Established in 1994, the college offers 16 UG and seven PG courses. More than 3,500 students, most of whom are from economically weaker sections, are studying in the institution. More than 200 teaching and non-teaching staff are working here, of which 21 are MKU teaching faculties, and the rest are guest lecturers who are paid consolidated salary of Rs 25,000. Speaking to TNIE, M Kavitha (name changed), a student, said she had joined the college because of the fees was less. However, the college is revising it by 10% every year, which is a burden on her parents. 'MKU authorities must look into this and revoke the syndicate order. None of the colleges in the city increases fees every year. The infrastructure here is very average, and does not match the fees they collect,' she said. The Students Federation of India (SFI) has been continuously fighting against the fee hike. 'So far we have given several representations to the collector, authorities of MKU and higher education department. We even staged protests, but they have gone in vain. What is the need to increase the fees every year? Salaries for teaching staff have remained the same for the last few years. Though it is a state-run university's college, it is collecting more than ten times the government approved fees,' said SFI district secretary C David Rajadurai.
