NCT Wish presents heart-popping first love

Group's 2nd EP 'Poppop' conveys diverse emotions of first love
Six-member K-pop boy group NCT Wish has returned with a refreshing sound perfect for spring.
NCT Wish's second mini album 'Poppop' captures the emotions of first love through six tracks, including the title track 'Poppop.'
'It's so exciting to be back as a full group, and I really love both the title track and the B-sides. I just can't wait to unveil our new album,' said leader Sion during a group interview held at Yongsan-gu, Seoul on Thursday.
'I was hoping our title song this time would be something upbeat and rhythmic that fits with dancing, and I'm really happy that it turned out to be a song that just makes you want to move,' Sion added.
Jaehee emphasized the charm of the lyrics. 'There's a line that says, 'You and I are the main characters in an anime.' It's a song that captures that feeling where everything seems beautiful as you fall in love. It starts off bubbly but then shifts in mood during the bridge, which makes it a really fun track.'
NCT Wish, which debuted in February 2024 as the final sub-unit of NCT, has sold nearly 2 million copies of its debut physical single 'Wish,' second physical single 'Songbird' and first EP 'Steady.' The new album 'Poppop' surpassed 1 million preorders before its official release.
Jaehee shared that he put effort into improving his vocals for this album. 'After we finished promoting 'Steady,' I spent a lot of time reflecting on my singing. I took vocal lessons and worked on finding my voice, and I finally felt like I was able to express myself in my own way.'
Main rapper Sakuya said he focused on matching the cool vibe of the title track. 'There's a big mood shift when the rap comes in after the hook, and I wanted to bring that out as much as possible, so I tried to sound as cool and charismatic as I could.'
Now just past its first anniversary, NCT Wish still seems a bit shy and awkward, but the members said they have grown a lot through their rookie promotions. The members also shared that the Asia tour 'Log in,' which began last November and included 12 sold-out shows across six cities in Japan, as well as sold-out concerts in Seoul and Macao, was a meaningful experience.
Yushi noted that he learned how to communicate with the audience while Jaehee praised Sion, saying, 'Sion's gotten so good at interacting with the crowd with ad-libs in the middle of the performance. I feel like we're learning how to create real synergy with the audience.'
The members also said that performing alongside many senior artists at SM's 30th anniversary concert 'SM Town Live 2025,' held in January, helped them grow as performers.
Sion, who took the stage with SM's iconic artist BoA for her signature song 'Only One,' said it was a huge honor. He was selected as her partner — a role reserved for the top male dancers among SM's idols.
'I found out I was chosen for the role when BoA texted me saying I should start practicing the one-kick signature dance for 'Only One.' I worked really hard for that stage,' Sion recalled.
Ryo looks forward to the rest of 2025. 'We're preparing for a solo concert sometime this year,' he said, expressing his excitement. Jaehee added, 'I hope people hear our songs — especially all the B-side tracks that I really love — just playing them as they walk down a street."

Doyoung soars with wider musical spectrum

With NCT and as solo vocalist, Doyoung promises broader future Many say that a person should think of what they love and do best and turn it into a career. In that sense, NCT's Doyoung was born to be a singer. Singing brings him the most joy and confidence, and now he returns not just as a member of an idol group that electrifies tens of thousands of fans, but as a solo vocalist carving out his own musical path with a second full-length album. 'I'm incredibly grateful to be releasing a second album. It captures the stories I wanted to tell, and I had the chance to work with people I've long hoped to collaborate with. Just like the main theme of the album — 'the power to dream,' it gave me the strength to keep dreaming,' Doyoung said during a group interview held Thursday in Seongdong-gu, Seoul. Following his first LP "Youth" in 2024, which explored a range of emotions and experiences of young people, Doyoung shared that he aimed to embrace an even broader theme with his new release. 'At first, I was inspired by the image of wings. After settling on the title 'Soar,' I envisioned creating an album that inspires people to dream through imagery of transcending and rising above,' he explained. The album's notable lineup of contributors — icons in the history of Korean bands — underscores just how meaningful "Soar" is to Doyoung. 'Kim Yuna of Jaurim, Kim Jong-wan of Nell and Yoon Do-hyun of YB — all of them have been central figures in Korea's band music scene. I had long hoped to work with them and have been knocking on doors, sending proposals and this time it finally came together. Each of them has such a distinct musical identity, recognized by the Korean public, and they taught me so much throughout the production of this album.' From Kim Yuna, he learned the importance of how a vocalist interprets a song. Kim Jong-wan of Nell gave him detailed guidance on vocal technique. And Yoon Do-hyun, who gifted him the deeply meaningful track 'Still' — written during Yoon's own battle with cancer — left Doyoung with a strong impression of human warmth. The album's lead track, 'Memory,' tells a story Doyoung had long wanted to express. 'If memories had a life of their own, I think becoming a cherished 'recollection' would be their most beautiful conclusion. That's the kind of story the song tells.' Doyoung emphasized how vital his fans and the public are to his musical journey. 'Even as a child, I didn't want to be a singer just because I liked singing alone. I loved singing in front of people. This doesn't mean that I only want to sing songs that are bound to be commercial hits, but I do sing with the hope of being loved by many listeners. I need people who love my music.' Now 29 years old, Doyoung is aware that a hiatus due to his compulsory military service is inevitable, though the timing has yet to be decided. He expressed hope that fans will think of him during that time through his album. 'I wanted this album to be like showing someone my diary — something personal that you only share with those dearest to you. I hope it becomes an album that lets people remember me.' As for the upcoming hiatus, the singer confidently said he has no worries. 'Even if I take a break for a while, I'm confident I'll be singing for a very, very long time. I want to tell my fans — please don't be sad.'

The Black Label to launch coed quintet

A five-member act named Allday Project is slated to debut on June 23 under The Black Label, the agency announced Monday. The quintet will comprise two male and three female members — including Youngseo and Annie. Youngseo had been expected to debut in girl group Illit when she claimed the No. 2 spot on K-pop competition show 'R U Next?' through which the group was formed. However, she parted ways with agency Belift Lab and Illit debuted with five members. Annie, meanwhile, is the eldest daughter of Shinsegae Chairperson Chung Yoo-kyung and the granddaughter of the group's Chair Lee Myung-hee. She is a Columbia grad whose real name is Moon Seo-yoon, and has been training under Teddy Park, the CEO of The Black Label known as a main producer behind Blackpink, since last year. The mixed-gender band opened a social media account on Monday and will put out a series of teasers leading up to its debut.
