Wrexham AFC: Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney legacy hailed

Leader Live18-07-2025
The Hollywood stars completed their takeover at The Racecourse in February 2021 and success has followed with the Reds securing an historic third successive promotion last term.
Back in the second tier for the first time in 43 years, Wrexham face the biggest step-up since beginning their rise up the football pyramid from the National League.
Strachan says Wrexham will find it tough in the Championship but he feels the players should benefit from having momentum.
And even if the Reds struggle when they come up against the likes of Ipswich Town and Southampton, former Manchester United and Scotland midfielder Strachan feels Reynolds and McElhenney have created a lasting legacy.
Strachan told OLBG: 'It's an overpowering league because there's a good level to it, good strength, good fitness, physical side to it. It's non-stop. League One is a bit like that as well, but this has gone up a level again.
'Wherever Wrexham have been, they've managed to come up and lift themselves up again. Once you've got momentum that they've got, it's a powerful thing, and how good you feel about yourself and how strong you feel.
'If you've got this mental strength and you think you're really fantastically fit and you run about like a maniac, there's not much change to the physical side of it.
'But the mental side is different. I don't think they've had any real down moments, so that will be one to watch.
'If they struggle, which they've not done in the last five years since they've been taken over, you wonder what will happen.

'They've been exciting. They've added to football. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have come in. Whatever happens, they'll never be forgotten.
'I think that's a great thing about football, if you leave memories for people. That's what these two have done, these owners.
'They've gone in there and they're now not even, the memory is not just for Wrexham, but football itself.'

Tyler Stephenson, Reds look to stay hot in rematch vs. Rays

July 26 - The Cincinnati Reds are on the outside looking in when it comes to the National League playoff picture. Cincinnati sits one game behind the San Diego Padres in the race for the final wild-card berth. The Reds will look to potentially climb into that spot when they host the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday evening in the second contest of a three-game series. Cincinnati inched closer to the inside of the cutoff line with a 7-2 win against the Rays in the series opener on Friday. Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, the Reds scored twice in their half of the frame before adding a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh inning. Cincinnati has won eight of its past 12 games with the trade deadline less than a week away. "Obviously, we're aware of the trade deadline looming and the boys want to play," pitcher Nick Martinez said. "The boys want to win, and we want to make a push. We're certainly playing like it." Tyler Stephenson helped fuel Friday's win with two hits and three RBIs. He has gotten into a groove of late with nine hits in his last eight games. "We talk about it in hitters' meetings, those opportunities -- just the small (things to) get them over and taking advantage of times guys are in scoring position," Stephenson said. "That's kind of where you can make or break in these games. The more situations you have, the more you can capitalize on those, chances are you're probably going to win." Cincinnati will send left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-1, 2.13 ERA) to the mound to start Saturday's game. Abbott will face Tampa Bay for the second time in his career, a year minus a day after the first. He took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits over four innings on July 27, 2024. The Rays, meanwhile, will look to snap out of a funk that has seen them drop four of their past five games. Friday's setback was their 11th loss in the past 14 road games. The past month hasn't been good to the squad, which is 6-15 since June 29. They held the first wild-card spot in the American League the day before that stretch began but have since dropped 1 1/2 games out of the third and final wild card. "You've just got to find some momentum," Rays center fielder Chandler Simpson said. "Really just banding together. Leaning on each other. Passing the baton. Just knowing that if one guy doesn't do it, the next guy will pick him up." Injuries have started to take a bite out of Tampa Bay's lineup. Infielder Ha-Seong Kim was placed on the 10-day injured list with a back strain on Friday. Second baseman Brandon Lowe (ankle/foot tendinitis) was added to the IL earlier this week. The Rays then acquired Stuart Fairchild from the Atlanta Braves to replace Lowe, but he now finds himself on the IL as well, because of an oblique strain. Right-hander Ryan Pepiot (6-8, 3.59 ERA) will start for Tampa Bay on Saturday. It will be his first career appearance against the Reds. --Field Level Media

Liverpool announce permanent Diogo Jota tributes including sculpture at Anfield

Reds forward Jota died in a car crash along with his brother Silva in Spain on July 3, aged 28. Tributes have been paid at Anfield with flowers, scarves, cards and jerseys being laid around the stadium. Liverpool confirmed that physical tributes have been removed and stored, while floral tributes will be composted and used in flower beds at Anfield and training facilities. The remaining items will be recycled and used to create a permanent memorial sculpture at Anfield. Additionally, players will have a 'Forever 20' emblem – referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number – printed on their shirts and stadium jackets for the season. A club statement said: 'The club is now able to provide details on how it will create more permanent tributes moving forward. The thousands of physical tributes outside Anfield have been gradually removed over the course of the last week and carefully separated and safely stored. 'Floral tributes will then be composted and used in flower beds across all club sites, including Anfield, the AXA Training Centre and AXA Melwood Training Centre. 'The remaining artefacts will be recycled by a specialist company and used to help create a permanent memorial sculpture that will become a future focal point of remembrance at Anfield. 'In the meantime, a temporary area of reflection has been created at Anfield so people can continue to pay their respects.' The club announced earlier in the month that Jota's squad number 20 had been retired in his honour across all levels, including the women's and academy teams. Liverpool paid tribute to Jota and Silva during their friendly against Preston on July 13, where supporters chanted Jota's name. Respects will also be paid ahead of the Reds' remaining pre-season games, where a floral tribute will be laid before kick-off at their games in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Anfield. Liverpool's Premier League season kicks off with a meeting against Bournemouth on August 15 and a main commemoration is set to take place with a special fan mosaic and a minute of silence.
