Kerala HC allows Transgender couple to use gender-neutral ‘parent' in birth certificate
Kerala HC
KOCHI: Kerala high court has allowed India's first pair of biological transgender parents to be identified in their child's birth certificate by the gender-neutral term 'parent' instead of the usual distinction between 'father' and 'mother'.
Justice A A Ziyad Rahman passed the order on a petition filed by Zahhad and Ziya Paval, both natives of Kozhikode. Zahhad, who identifies himself as a trans man, gave birth to the couple's child in Feb 2023. The birth certificate, issued by Kozhikode Municipal Corporation under the Kerala Registration of Birth and Death Rules, 1999, mentions Ziya as the father and Zahhad as the mother.
The pair's request to the corporation to do way with parental gender distinction in the document was turned down, prompting them to move court.
Zahhad argued that a trans man being identified as the child's mother could cause complications, including while seeking admission to a school and applying for a passport or Aadhaar.
The bench directed the Kozhikode corporation authorities to modify the birth certificate within two months by removing the columns for father and mother and incorporating the names of the petitioners as 'parents' without referring to their respective gender.

National Lok Adalat to be held on July 12 across Koppal district: Judge Mahantesh Daragad
The National Lok Adalat will be conducted across all courts in Koppal district on 12 July, offering the public a golden opportunity to settle their legal disputes amicably and efficiently, announced Senior Civil Judge and Member Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Mahantesh S. Daragad. Addressing a press conference at the DLSA office in Koppal on Friday, Mr. Daragad urged litigants and the general public to make the most of this opportunity to resolve both pre-litigation and pending court cases through mutual compromise. He noted that the initiative is being conducted under the guidance of Principal District and Sessions Judge and DLSA Chairman C. Chandrashekhar, and will be organised in all courts of Koppal on the scheduled date. 'People can settle a variety of disputes in the Lok Adalat, including civil cases, land acquisition issues, bank recovery matters, applications, labour disputes, MMDR cases, cheque bounce cases, motor accident claims, matrimonial disputes, and compoundable criminal cases,' he explained. Mr. Daragad emphasised that resolving matters through compromise helps preserve relationships and leads to a mutually agreeable closure. Furthermore, any court fees paid will be fully refunded if the case is settled in the Lok Adalat. However, he pointed out that once a matter is resolved in a Lok Adalat, there is no provision for appeal, thus saving both time and money for litigants. He urged the public to fully utilise this chance to resolve disputes outside the regular judicial process. District SATHI Committee constituted Mr. Daragad said that, in line with the directive of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, the District SATHI Committee (Society for Assistance to Children in Difficult Situation) has been formed, comprising representatives from multiple departments including the DLSA, District Child Protection Unit, Child Welfare Committees, tahsildars from all taluks, education and health officials, officials from the Department of Women and Child Development, police, panel advocates, and para-legal volunteers. The committee's main aim is to identify abandoned children in the district who do not yet have Aadhaar cards and facilitate their enrolment. This step is crucial to ensuring that such children are legally entitled to government benefits. The public has been urged to inform the committee if they know of any such children. The Judge also announced that the DLSA, Koppal, invited applications for the posts of Chief Legal Aid Counsel, Deputy Chief Legal Aid Counsel, and Assistant Legal Aid Counsel. Eligible candidates can apply between June 9 and June 19 by submitting the prescribed application form along with necessary documents before 6 p.m. on the last date. Kolkata police tighten passport checks to crack down on illegal immigrants and ID fraud; address checks mandatory
Kolkata police tighten passport checks to crack down on illegal immigrants and ID fraud; address checks mandatory KOLKATA: Breaking the syndicates dealing with illegal immigration by identifying the gang heads and double-checking all received ID documents from the source to examine their authenticity were the two reasons behind the changes introduced in passport verification, said Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma on Thursday, stressing the aim was to ensure illegal immigrants could not stay on. "We have re-evaluated the passport verification system. Our primary target is to identify syndicate members and individuals involved in such illegal activities. Wherever documents are getting used, we are scrutinising and verifying them right back to their source," Verma. "The accused at times use different addresses for different cases. We are cross-checking Aadhaar addresses with other ID documents." Verma was speaking to reporters after planting saplings at the Alipore Bodyguard Lines on World Environment Day on Thursday. He urged citizens to plant at least 10 trees as a "contribution to society". Going back to passport verification, Verma pointed out that no new passport would be issued nor any old one renewed without an address visit. Even cops asking passport applicants to visit police stations would face action, Verma said. The SOP says all documents of a passport applicant will be uploaded on the portal to root out discrepancy. Applicants can monitor document verification status through a link provided by police. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !

New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): The Union government released an e-book highlighting its achievements across various sectors over the last 11 years. The year 2025 marks 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. The book said that these 11 years have been dedicated to bringing about development that is inclusive, progressive, and sustainable. 'The government under Prime Minister Modi has been steadfast in its commitment to creating equity and opportunity for all citizens,' it added. 'PM Modi has brought the politics of development - Vikasvaad - into the mainstream, making it the focal point around which political discourse and policy action now revolve,' it reads. This can be seen across sectors, whether it is in vaccinating the entire eligible population in record time against Covid-19, recording the nation's highest ever exports in history, in the digital revolution which is taking place across India, in achieving monumental targets for rural electrification, in building world-class infrastructure or in providing drinking water facilities across households.' It emphasised that there has been a paradigm shift in public service delivery and the implementation of government schemes using the JAM Trinity - Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile - in the last 11 years. 'In the last 11 years, there has been a paradigm shift in public service delivery and the implementation of government schemes using the JAM Trinity - Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile. It has removed intermediaries and permits direct transfer of benefits into an intended beneficiary's bank account.' Emphasising the government's action for conservation of the environment, it said, 'Under Prime Minister Modi, India has championed environmental protection globally, emerging as a leader of the movement. The United Nations declared June 21st as International Yoga Day, an acknowledgement of the global recognition of heritage. It also mentioned Operation Sindoor, terming it a demonstration of new India--resolute, swift, and sovereign in action.
