VCs Are Focusing More on Purpose and Less on Profits — Here Are the 5 Things They're Looking For in Founders
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
Venture investors are adapting to the times, and are increasingly open to working with Al technologies and investing in both new and emerging sectors such as longevity and wellness, areas of the global economy which have seen over 75% more funding in 2023 and projected to reach $8 trillion by 2030 according to a recent UBS report.
Trends are showing that venture investors are also becoming more conscientious in choosing their startups. With Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors rising to importance among investors worldwide, according to an article written by an expert from EY, it is increasingly apparent that purpose-led investors are gaining traction in the VC space too.
An article written on BusinessCloud summarises that one of the main reasons why investors are betting on purpose in 2025 is that purpose-led companies "deliver profits, are transparent and, more importantly, resilient." A study conducted by B Lab Global showed that B Corp companies, which operated on principles on sustainability, outperformed ordinary businesses in revenues.
As an entrepreneur and a venture investor myself, I am also driven by a deep sense of purpose: to help more people achieve a longer health span across the globe. I carefully select to support other entrepreneurs and brands who share my vision. The more aligned my values are with a startup entrepreneur's, the more likely we are to begin a partnership together to achieve our common goals.
This is how venture investors are increasingly thinking about their future endeavours. I am keen to help others in the community understand the five key factors that entrepreneurs need to possess to capture the attention of a purpose-led venture investor.

1. A leader with a strong vision
Regardless of whether investors share the values exuded by a business venture or not, it is crucial for an entrepreneur to exhibit a strong and clear vision for their startup from the get-go.
A visionary entrepreneur would have a strong sense of purpose and direction for their business, and this will also be a trait shared with the purpose-led venture investor themself.
An entrepreneur's eloquently communicated vision for their startup, together with an honest picture of the business's current framework, strengths and opportunities, will help the investor visualize the future that they could help create by investing in the business themselves.
It is common knowledge in the VC world that although investors rarely accept deals, they almost never budge away from the entrepreneurs they believe in. And these entrepreneurs often begin their pitch with a powerful vision statement that investors can't stop thinking about.
2. A business built on trust
One of my most important beliefs is that trust is like a mirror — once broken, it simply can't be pieced together again.
A purpose-led investor operates on trust and therefore will expect the entrepreneur standing in front of them to think the same way. An entrepreneur will have to show the investor that the start-up thus far has been successful because of the meaningful relationships it has built on, whether these are with employees, contractors or most importantly, the customer base.
A business built on trust is one that is constructed with precision and a lot of care. It also indicates long-term growth and longevity for the entity, as opposed to it being one that burns bridges with overly risky transactions and bad decisions. In a nutshell, trust is the main driver of success for a business.

3. Understanding the servant leadership style
Purpose-led investors look to partner with individuals with strong conviction, not only in terms of business ideas but also in terms of the leadership style they practice. An entrepreneur who embraces the servant leadership style is one who focuses on serving the greater good, who prioritizes the health, well-being and success of people and the communities they serve.
I have practiced the servant leadership style in my career, and it is a humbling experience, as it is all about being a leader who leads without prioritizing their own ego. There are three Cs to becoming a servant leader, and that is about: compassion, character and competence.
While it is not compulsory for entrepreneurs to exhibit this leadership style, I believe that at least understanding its philosophy will be beneficial. This is especially for when entrepreneurs deal with purpose-led investors who will be attracted to qualities such as authenticity, integrity and a desire to support others in an entrepreneur, especially when they pursue a business with a purpose.
4. Commitment to measuring social impact
A startup wanting to create a social impact is an attractive prospect, but what's more important is whether it can sustain itself financially in the long term without compromising its ideals. This is where entrepreneurs need to include in their pitch a way to measure the impact they will be creating and how that will effectively translate into ROI for the investor.
Showing a commitment to measuring the impact a company has created means that the entrepreneur is dedicated to learning from any mistakes that might occur and ensuring that the original intent of the business is not lost.
Purpose should also not be taken for granted, as without methods to measure impact, companies can later on be privy to public accusations of impact washing. So you've also got to walk the walk. Research shows that 60% of brands with purpose-driven initiatives are not measuring their impact on society. It's best to be wary of statistics like these and stand out as a startup that not only has a vision but also has the framework to produce tangible results.

5. Good market knowledge
This goes without saying, but most types of investors will expect entrepreneurs to know their target market, understand their competition and have a good grasp of the trends that are dominating the sector they are interested in.
A good knowledge of the regional cultures associated with their intended markets is also an important factor for an entrepreneur, as purpose-led investors often favour an internationalist outlook.

How Much Richer Is Jeff Bezos Than the Entire Population of Florida?
When people hear of someone being 'worth more than a state,' it sounds exaggerated, but Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his $252 billion net worth (a number that changes daily) come startlingly close. It makes you wonder: Can one person's fortune truly rival the collective income and wealth of millions? To see how this plays out, we'll look at Florida, a state known for its booming economy and massive population, as a benchmark for comparison. Florida, one of America's fastest-growing and most economically influential states, boasts 23.3 million residents and some of the highest rates of incoming wealth in the country. Find Out: Read Next: Jeff Bezos' Fortune: How Did He Get There? Jeff Bezos, the founder and executive chairman of Amazon, has amassed his fortune through an expansive blend of digital retail, tech investments and stock appreciation. The vast majority of his $200-plus billion net worth comes from Amazon stock and related ventures, per Forbes. Bezos's wealth isn't just tied to Amazon, though; ventures like Blue Origin and a range of investments in technology, media and space industries have fueled his ascent. Industry analysts say this flexibility is critical: While blue-chip assets like Amazon keep his portfolio formidable, Bezos is always scanning for emerging opportunities that can keep his net worth climbing. In July, Bezos made headlines by selling $5.7 billion in Amazon shares, barely a dent in his overall holdings, according to Fortune. Even when Amazon stock wobbles, the rest of his investments and ventures provide a ballast, helping him weather sudden shifts far better than most. Watch Out: Florida's Massive Economic Machine Florida's population boom powered the state to new heights in 2025, reaching a record 23.3 million people, according to the U.S. Census figures. It's not just retirees and snowbirds; high-earning professionals from around the nation are streaming in, fueling annual household incomes that now average $71,711 and total nearly $674 billion for the state each year. Migration persists at a record pace: An estimated $39.2 billion in net yearly income moved into Florida from other states thanks to tax-friendly rules and a climate of opportunity, according to the Florida Chamber of Commerce. With roughly 9.32 million households, almost every corner of Florida, from Miami condos to Orlando suburbs, contributes to this stunning statewide economic engine. Each year, that engine generates enough income to buy out the entirety of Amazon several times over, underscoring the scale at which Florida's residents collectively operate. Who Wins the Wealth Race: Bezos or Florida? Stacking Jeff Bezos' $252 billion net worth against the $674 billion in total annual household income from Florida's 23.3 million residents quickly reveals perspective. On paper, Bezos controls about 37% of what every Florida household earns in a single year, a staggering figure for one person, but still far outmatched by millions of active Florida wage earners. This ratio makes Bezos' fortune about four times smaller than the state's pooled yearly income, underscoring the unique scope of state economics versus even the largest personal fortunes. However, the gap narrows if you consider liquid assets and cash, where most Floridian households keep far less than their annual income. Bezos, by contrast, holds his wealth in assets that can fluctuate in value, but often with far more speed and volatility than the slow and steady accrual of household wages. Still, his financial firepower is unmatched by most living individuals today. ‘Stagflation is coming to the U.S.,' says this economist. Here's what it means for the dollar, bonds and stocks.
'If you look through the front windscreen rather than the rear-view mirror, it's clear to see stagflation is coming to the U.S.' That's the opinion of Savvas Savouri, managing director of QuantMetriks, an economic advisory boutique headquartered in London. I plan to work until 80. Can I contribute to my IRA while taking RMDs? Trade Desk's stock sees its worst drop ever, and analysts wonder if Amazon is to blame 'I have a great mortgage rate': I need $80K to buy my husband out of our home. Do I raid my $180K Roth IRA? As one might imagine, after a long career spanning academia, several investment banks and an extended stint as the economist at fund management firm, Tosca Capital, Savouri has strong opinions on economies, markets and asset prices, and expresses them unequivocally. His views on the direction of the U.S. economy are emphatic: inflation is going up, the dollar is going down and the yield curve is steepening. The inflationary pressures he cites are threefold: a declining dollar (which makes imports more expensive), the restrictions on cheap migrant labor pushing up costs and higher tariffs. That the impact of the tariffs have not manifested itself in data thus far is because they are lagging indicators, he says. Savouri is adamant that tariffs can only ever be inflationary, as was, he points out, almost all of Trump's campaign manifesto. He cites especially the pledges to re-shore manufacturing and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act earlier this summer that he regards as 'printing money'. In a note entitled 'The Inflationator vs The Powell,' Savouri predicted Powell's tenure at the Fed may be much shorter than the official departure date of May 2026, owing to the pressure being exerted by the White House. He draws an analogy with the central bank governors of Japan (Shirakawa in 2013) and Turkey (Agbal in 2021) who were discarded for not cutting rates when the political leaders demanded it. It wasn't so much 'the central bankers [who] were carried out of the monetary ring,' he quips, 'but the respective currencies'. Given his expectations for Powell, the direction of interest rates and inflation then, it's perhaps unsurprising Savouri is decidedly bearish on the dollar, describing a Wile E. Coyote moment of turbo-paralysis before it falls victim to gravity. This may be welcomed by the Trump administration. Indeed, a big call by Savouri is that any meeting between Trump and China's president Xi Jinping this year will deliver an agreement by Beijing to allow the renminbi to appreciate to help make U.S. goods more competitive. He thinks the buck's current peg to the Hong Kong dollar will thus be removed. As he sees it, if the dollar falls in tandem with Fed rate cuts and mounting inflation, then the U.S. Treasury yield curve must steepen (longer-term yields BX:TMUBMUSD30Y rising faster relative to short-term yields BX:TMUBMUSD02Y) even more sharply than it has already. Savouri asks, rhetorically, 'Who is going to buy long-term U.S. debt because he's [Trump] just launched a trade war against the traditional buyers?' His recommendation to investors looking to shield themselves from such adverse movements is to buy TIPS — or Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities — that adjust interest payments to match inflation. He also thinks these adverse developments could be beneficial to stocks, but not all of them. He argues inflation is good for those stocks — particularly the large caps/big tech that can pass on costs to consumers — that have a good percentage of their earnings overseas in other currencies, and whose balance sheets are strong enough to handle a higher-rate environment. The S&P 500 SPX might be fine then, but the Russell 2000 RUT or other small/mid caps that operate within America only, or whose balance sheets have a lot of short-maturity debt that will need to be refinanced at punishingly high rates of interest, will struggle, Savouri warns. He is no advocate of cryptocurrencies BTCUSD as a method to hedge against potential dollar ructions, and in fact believes their adoption now presents a systemic risk to American financial infrastructure. But Savouri does like gold GC00 as a reciprocal of the dollar and he's convinced that Australian demographics and fundamentals makes the Australian dollar AUDUSD the best bet in foreign exchange markets.
