Mario Kart World update makes the game easier but doesn't fix biggest issues

Metro30-07-2025
Nintendo has rolled out a major update to Mario Kart World, with a lot of welcome changes and some strange omissions.
Mario Kart World might be one of the best kart racers ever, but there are a handful of questionable design decisions holding it back, many of which could be easily fixed via patches.
Nintendo has rolled out several updates to Mario Kart World already, but none have addressed any of its shortcomings. In fact, the last update proved to be contentious, as it made traditional three lap races less frequent in random online matches.
Another update has now been released which offers some improvements, while making changes we're not sure anyone was asking for.
In update 1.2.0, which was released on July 29, Nintendo has nerfed the enemy AI 'in everything other than Battle'. While it's unclear if this impacts opponents across all difficulty levels, it might prove another contentious addition for those looking for a challenge.
In the VS Race of Single Player, added No COM to the COM rules.
In the VS Race of Single Player and Multiplayer, added 'Mushrooms only' to the item rules.
You can now choose View Replay after downloading ghost data in Time Trials.
You can now choose whom to watch when spectating in Knockout Tour and Balloon Battle in Online Play, Wireless Play, and LAN Play.
You can now see the waiting time until the next race or battle starts in Online Play, Wireless Play, and LAN Play.
When using CameraPlay in Multiplayer and Online Play, the game will now remember the camera cursor position and size until the player closes the game.
If you change the number of people playing, the cursor position and size will return to their original settings.
On the Free Roam map, when you gather all of the P Switches, ? Panels, and Peach Medallions, the colours of the various numbers will now change.
Made COM weaker in everything other than Battle.
Made homing of Boomerang weaker.
Decreased the probability of getting a Triple Dash Mushroom in the low position, whenever the item rules in a race are anything other than Frantic.
Changed it so order of getting ? Block is higher than in the past, whenever the item rules in a race are anything other than Frantic.
Made it so there is a wheel spinning animation if the player presses the A button (acceleration) too early when starting a race while driving.
Player will not lose speed even when spinning wheels.
Increased the frequency of lap-type courses appearing in the selection when choosing the next course in VS Race and wireless races.
There are some welcome quality-of-life improvements though. You can now choose who to watch when spectating in Knockout Tour and Balloon Battle, across online and wireless play, while a timer has been added so you can see how long you have to wait until the next race when playing online.

In the Free Roam mode, Nintendo has made it slightly easier to tell when you've collected all the P Switches, Question Panels, or Peach Medallions, as the colour of the total number you have collected will change. However, this still doesn't highlight where they are on the map.
Strangely, Nintendo has made an adjustment which initially appears to address the outcry from the last update. In the patch notes, it states the frequency of lap type courses has been increased, but this change is, frustratingly, only in local multiplayer races and not online.
In another weird addition, you can now play single-player VS Race without any CPU opponents – if you fancy going around tracks by yourself outside of Free Roam. A 'Mushrooms only' option has been added to the item rules across VS Race too.
A number of items have also been impacted by the update. The 'homing of Boomerang' is now weaker, while you're now less likely to get the Triple Dash Mushroom in lower positions. However, you're now more likely to get a ? Block.
It's a peculiar update, which still doesn't address the cluttered character select screen, but it might be teeing up a bigger announcement for Mario Kart World in the rumoured Nintendo Direct for this month. More Trending
All signs point to some Donkey Kong Bananza-themed additions at some point soon, with many players having noted the lack of costumes for both Donkey Kong and Pauline, when compared to the rest of the roster.
Some Mario Kart staples of previous games are also absent, namely Diddy Kong and Funky Kong, who was in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so they might be added as post-launch DLC. Some other racers are also rumoured, but beware as they are a spoiler for Donkey Kong Bananza.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe got paid-for DLC via the Booster Course Pass, but it's unclear if Nintendo will follow the same strategy for its successor, or if it will wait a few years before adding new courses into the mix.

Best of Gamescom 2025 trailers – Resident Evil Requiem to Lego Batman

While light on big announcements, Gamescom Opening Night Live delivered a wealth of trailers for the likes of Ninja Gaiden 4, Ghost of Yōtei, and Silent Hill f. Despite being the biggest gaming convention in the world, Gamescom Opening Night Live in Cologne, Germany is usually light on major game announcements in comparison to Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards. However, while not matching the latter, this year's event was more stacked than usual, with Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7, a Black Myth: Wukong sequel, and a new trailer for Resident Evil Requiem being the big headliners. Many expected Hollow Knight: Silksong to make a big splash as a demo is playable at the show, but aside from confirmation that it's coming out this year in a brief snippet, any major news on that title is being saved for a dedicated livestream on Thursday, August 21. Beyond these juggernauts, there were some surprises and reveals of previously leaked titles. If you're looking for a handy rundown of the highlights, you can check out the biggest and best below. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. While it was perhaps hyped up too much during the show, the new trailer for Resident Evil Requiem is still just as creepy as you'd hope. This appears to cover the game's opening (or at least some kind of prologue) where protagonist Grace Ashcroft is escorted by her mother Alyssa (from Resident Evil: Outbreak) through a dark hotel. There's little gameplay shown but the production quality is excellent, and with a demo available on the show floor at Gamescom, expect some impressions soon. The game is set to be released on February 27, 2026 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The announcement leaked beforehand, but the trailer for Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight was one of the show's best. In a similar vein to Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, this new outing from developer Traveler's Tales looks to encompass decades of Batman films, television, comic books, and games in one package. The trailer shows off combat inspired by Batman: Arkham Asylum and scenes pulled from various movies, including The Dark Knight and 2022's The Batman. The real star of the show though? Matt Berry as the voice of Bane. It's set to be released in 2026 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Resident Evil Requiem aside, Capcom might have another winner on its hands with Onimusha: Way Of The Sword next year. This new trailer shows off some spectacular creature designs and the brutal combat, and it looks more impressive with each passing trailer. It's set to be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in 2026. In one of many surprises during the pre-show, the developers behind Ghostrunner revealed their next game, Valor Mortis. This is a first-person Soulslike set in alternate history version of the Napoleonic wars, where you play as a soldier who is brought back to life with the corrupting power of a mysterious plague. It's set to be released in 2026. The fourth instalment in the real-time strategy series was revealed during the event, which promises to be a return to its roots via mass battles and base-building. It will also sport over 70 campaign missions, an expanded Sync Kill system, and four Warhammer factions to choose from, including the introduction of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Set 100 years after the original, Lords Of The Fallen 2 got its first trailer during the show. It's a CG-heavy affair, so it's difficult to tell if it will be as derivative of Dark Souls as the first, but the developers have promised faster and more punishing fights. It's set to be released in 2026. Another pre-show surprise was the return of Bubsy the Bobcat, who originally debuted in 1993's Claws Encounters Of The Furred Kind. This new title, Bubsy 4D, is from Demon Turf developer Fabraz, and appears to be a platformer much in the same vein. No release date was announced, but it's set to be released on all platforms, including the Switch 2. Much like Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, every trailer for Silent Hill f looks better than the last. This latest puts the spotlight on the story story, as protagonist Hinako Schimizu's secluded town of Ebisugaoka is consumed by a sudden fog. After the successful remake of Silent Hill 2, this looks likethe fresh shot in the arm the franchise desperately needs. After being announced two years ago, this zombie shooter was re-revealed with a new gameplay trailer. It's from the same studio who released 2019's World War Z and throws in vehicular chaos into the co-op mix. It's set to be released in early 2026. Ron Gilbert, the developer known for his work on the Monkey Island series, is creating a roguelike vertical-scrolling role player with his studio Terrible Toybox. As outlined on the Steam page, you have to 'kill enemies, collect gold, and avoid the Grim Reaper long enough to pay the Ferryman's exorbitant river-crossing fee to the afterlife'. The biggest PlayStation 5 exclusive of the year received another trailer at Gamescom, which was bundled with a free DLC announcement. Set to be released in 2026, the Legends DLC for the Ghost Of Tsushima sequel is a co-op multiplayer mode featuring two-player story missions and four-player survival matches in a 'fantastical, supernatural setting'. Team Jade, the studio behind Delta Force, announced a creepy squad-based shooter in Project Spectrum, which is developed in Unreal Engine 5 for PC. It looks visually impressive as you'd expect, but it proved one of the unexpected highlights of the show overall. One of the most memorable games from Gamescom Opening Night Live popped up, once again, in the pre-show. Denshattack! looks like a mash-up of Sonic The Hedgehog and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, albeit where you're flipping and grinding as a train. It's vibrant and wild, and it's set to be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in Spring 2026. Ninja's are having a comeback in 2025, and this next mainline instalment in the Ninja Gaiden series might be the culmination. Co-developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4's latest trailer places an emphasis on its story, but the flashy combat and hyper visuals continue to steal the show. It's set to be released October 21, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. Drag x Drive review – wheelchair basketball that might give you wrist cramp

When a new console is released, you can always expect at least one first-party game designed specifically to showcase its novel features. The PlayStation 5 had Astro's Playroom, the Steam Deck had Aperture Desk Job, and for the Nintendo Switch 2 there's Drag x Drive. Here, you play competitive wheelchair basketball with the Joy-Con 2's new mouse mode (which lets you control a game by pushing it along a desk like a computer mouse) – rolling, jumping and shooting in hectic three v three bouts. A solid exhibition of a controller upgrade, to be sure, but Drag x Drive struggles to harness the high-octane nature of the real-world sport, instead delivering a shallow impersonation. As a basketball game, Drag x Drive demands that you spend the majority of your time shooting hoops and racing around the court, each Joy-Con controlling a single wheel on your avatar's chair. Additionally, you can press the triggers to lift your wheels and jump, or raise each Joy-Con and flick to shoot your shot or pass the ball to a teammate. As cool as it sounds in theory, this doggedly practical approach isn't as intuitive as you might expect, and, ironically, not very accessible either. It's tough to find a comfortable position as you press and roll your palms, so it takes grit to truly master the control scheme. Still, if you can muscle through, there are rare spouts of joy to be found in hitting top speed, bashing into your opponents and taking possession of the ball. Some additional variety comes via the player styles menu, which allows you to jump between different presets based on your preferred approach. Alongside the balanced forward style, which splits your rebounding, strength and quickness skills evenly, the guard style sacrifices the other stats for a speed boost, and the centre position makes you slower but tougher. The ability to switch between styles helps smooth out the rocky onboarding process and allows you to freshen up the gameplay between online multiplayer matches, which are the key focus of the game. At a glance, Drag x Drive is reminiscent of vehicular football simulator Rocket League, with two teams battling it out to score points by pulling off trick shots and smashing into one another. However, where Rocket League excels with its litany of bouncy stadiums and explosive graphics, Drag x Drive attacks the genre with more restraint, trading atmospheric arenas for cold, metallic courts. There is some reprieve in the character customisation menu, where you can alter the colour of your wheels and chair, as well as choose cute headgear such as cat ears or old-timey driving goggles. But it's a far cry from the warmth and esoteric vibrance that Nintendo is known for. Despite a lack of personality and wrist-cramping controls, there's an adrenaline rush when players chase you that's easy to get swept up in, especially when your momentum is dependent on your real-world stamina. There's also a real sense of pride when you finally land a distance shot, or craft a witty assist. As your confidence grows, you'll start to see the benefit of the half-pipes that flank the in-game court, allowing you to pull off wicked tricks and earn extra points. Suddenly, simple shots make way for flamboyant slam dunks, and you feel more like a pro. Between bouts of b-ball, there's also a small pool of repetitive skill-honing side activities to engage with, including a skipping rope minigame, a shooting competition and an obstacle course. Excelling at these challenges and performing well in matches allows you to earn trophies, which unlock more cosmetics to jazz up your avatar's aesthetic. Despite some efforts in meta-progression, it's difficult to look past Drag x Drive's most significant hurdle – that it's uncomfortable to play for extended periods. The mouse controls are ingenious in theory, and when applied in small bouts, it feels like a novel prototype. But, in the context of such overtly active gameplay, the concept starts to fall apart. What remains is a surprisingly inaccessible sports game that lacks modal variety and a long-term hook. If you were hoping for a spiritual successor to the Nintendo Switch's Rock 'Em Sock 'Em brawler Arms, you will be disappointed. Drag x Drive is available now, £16.99

Black Myth: Wukong sequel revealed but don't expect it anytime soon

Gamescom Opening Night Live closed the show with a follow-up to Black Myth: Wukong, based around a new character from Chinese mythology. The success of Black Myth: Wukong made a follow-up inevitable, but developer Game Science has announced the next game in the series sooner than you'd expect. Almost exactly a year after Black Myth: Wukong was released, the studio has revealed its successor titled Black Myth: Zhong Kui. It's described as a new entry in the Black Myth series and not a direct sequel to Wukong, although it will still be rooted in Chinese mythology. A brief teaser trailer was shown at Gamescom Opening Night Live, where we see Zhong Kui riding a giant tiger. Zhong Kui is described as a ghost-catching God who wanders between hell and earth. There is no release date or even a window, but Game Science has explained in a Q&A on its website that the game is 'little more than an empty folder at this stage'. In other words, don't expect it to come out for a few years yet. 'With the project being little more than an empty folder at this stage, there's hardly any game footage we could share,' the studio wrote. 'To keep all hands focused on development, we decided to deliver a CG short to let everyone know that a new project has kicked off.' Black Myth: Zhong Kui will be a single-player action role playing game like its predecessor, but the studio wants to make 'refreshing changes' to the formula. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. When writing about its reasons for picking this project over a direct sequel to Wukong, the studio wrote: 'Upon completing the journey with the Destined One, we now aspire to take a tentative first step – to build more distinct gaming experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design. More Trending 'Zhong Kui came as a natural choice born of that aspiration and other contributing factors. We are confident that, in this new project, we can make refreshing changes, create new things, while taking a hard look at our past flaws and regrets.' The studio also reaffirmed DLC for Black Myth: Wukong is on the way, and possibly alluded to a sequel, adding: 'And to all the friends who love Black Myth: Wukong: the westward journey won't end here.' Black Myth: Zhong Kui is planned for PC and 'all mainstream console platforms', although it's unclear if that will include the Switch 2.
