Maya, Stewie, Paige … and now Sarah Strong. Count her among UConn's most elite freshmen

New York Times06-04-2025

TAMPA, Fla. — Azzi Fudd missed most of UConn's summer workouts while continuing to rehab her knee. But a few days into playing alongside star freshman forward Sarah Strong, Paige Bueckers came to her pal Fudd with a mini scouting report on the Huskies' newest rookie.
'Paige was like, 'Oh, my gosh. She's really good,'' Fudd, a graduate guard, recalled Bueckers reporting.

'And I was like, 'really?' I'd heard all the coaches talk about her during her recruitment process, but I hadn't really seen it because I wasn't out there.'
Strong — a woman of many points and rebounds but very few words — had come to UConn around late August not totally knowing what to expect from her inaugural season. The Durham, N.C., native had hoped she'd adjust quickly. She wanted to make an impact for Geno Auriemma's storied program.
But when her teammates noticed how quickly she grasped UConn's offense in those summer workouts — and all of the nuances that come with it — they had a feeling she'd be no ordinary freshman. That conclusion was correct.
Friday in Tampa, Strong scored 22 points in UConn's blowout victory against top overall seed UCLA, becoming just the third freshman in program history behind Breanna Stewart and Maya Moore to drop 20-plus in a Final Four game.

If UConn wins the national championship Sunday afternoon against No. 1 seed South Carolina, sure, it will most likely be because Bueckers had a day. But Strong is just as critical for the Huskies — up there with the best of the best when it comes to UConn's most impressive freshmen and the X-factor for Auriemma's team all season long.
'It wasn't easy,' said Strong, who averages 16.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. 'It definitely took a while. Took a lot of going to my family and coaches. (But) I would just say, every day at practice, I would get more confident in myself and get more comfortable doing the things I did in high school.'
Strong was the top-rated recruit in the Class of 2024 out of Grace Christian School and grew up in the ultimate basketball family. Her mother, Allison, starred for Harvard, then was a WNBA teammate of South Carolina coach Dawn Staley. Her father, Danny, played at NC State.

Just thinking about the poor suckers who had to guard her in high school makes Fudd pity them. When Auriemma watched Strong play as a five-star recruit, he knew the potential was there for the 6-foot-2 forward who is just as dangerous from the 3-point line as she is when she's spin-moving her way to the basket.

Neither of them realized the transition would go this smoothly, though.
'I saw her do things that I hadn't seen any kid that age do in a long, long, long time,' Auriemma said. 'I said, 'If this can transfer, even half of it, to when she's at UConn, we've got something pretty special.
'I thought it would take some time. But it clicked right from the very beginning. There was no doubt in my mind that we (would) enter the NCAA Tournament and I'm worried about, 'Man, I hope she doesn't act like a freshman.' She hasn't acted like a freshman, she hasn't acted her age since I saw her in ninth and 10th grade. I'm not surprised.'
Strong, who has scored 20-plus points in three of UConn's five tournament games to this point, enters the South Carolina matchup on the heels of 44 combined points and 25 total rebounds against USC and UCLA. Bueckers was a superstar freshman in her own right — winning Naismith Player of the Year honors in her inaugural campaign — as were Stewart and Moore. But Strong already has more rebounds than any other freshman in program history with 341 — 45 more than Tina Charles' 296 mark in 2006-07. With 633 points, she is second on the all-time UConn freshman scoring list, only behind Moore's 678 points in 2007-08. Her 137 assists are second to Bueckers' 168 in 2020-21, and her 63 blocks rank fourth among Huskies rookies.
Staley recruited Strong as a high school prospect, hoping her friendship with Allison Strong would help South Carolina more than it ultimately did. But the Gamecocks got in late on Strong, who at that point was lasered in on UConn. Now they're on the other end — stuck with having to find answers for her Sunday afternoon.

'Sarah is … how do I say this?' Staley said Saturday. 'In the next three years, she might be the best player to come out of UConn. And those are strong words.
'But what she's able to do — stay calm, the IQ is off the charts, the skill set off the charts. Big play after big play after big play. Such a great complement to an already-skilled UConn team. I think she's the piece that puts it all together. She makes it work.'
Indeed, Sunday could come down to Strong, who has been the one-two punch with Bueckers the Huskies have needed to return to the national title game. Next year's team should be in her hands, too.
Count Fudd among those who can't wait to watch it all unfold.
'I can't even think. She is so incredible right now. And to know that she's only going to get better being here, learning from the coaches, being in this program, she's already the best player, she's already unguardable, already so smart. Passes so well. Sees the floor so well. She's a great defender. So I'm like, what can she get better at, really?' Fudd said.
'But the sky is the limit for her. And I can't wait to have another season with her.'

Top 10 Big Ten receiving leaders returning in 2025

Top 10 Big Ten receiving leaders returning in 2025 When one thinks of Big Ten football, they think of electrifying offenses. And what would electrifying offense be without elite wide receivers? The returning receiving leaders for the conference in 2025 almost certainly pack a punch, whether it be their first year in the conference or someone who is already fresh on everyone's minds. 10. Vinny Anthony II, Wisconsin 2024 Stats: 39 catches, 672 yards, 4 TDs, 17.2 YPC One of the longest tenured Badger receivers, Anthony is no stranger to the conference. Ranking fourth in yards per catch in the conference last year, Anthony feels primed and ready for yet another stellar season. Look for Billy Edwards Jr, the Maryland QB transfer, to develop an immediate rapport with the reliable Anthony. In Phil Longo's Air Raid scheme, he just might be the key to unlocking Edwards' growth as well. 9. Ian Strong, Rutgers 2024 Stats: 43 catches, 676 yards, 5 TDs, 15.7 YPC For Rutgers to continually improve under Greg Schiano, they must rely upon players like Ian Strong. The leader in receiving yards last season for Rutgers, Strong proved his toughness especially in the red zone. However, his reliability will almost certainly be tested as Rutgers face perhaps the toughest Big Ten schedule possible. In order to maintain any kind of consistency offensively, Strong and Kaliakmanis must remain elite in the red zone. Thus, while Strong may not be the most well-rounded receiver on this list, he is nevertheless one of its most important members due to a potentially expanded role this year. 8. Max Klare, Ohio State 2024 Stats: 51 catches, 685 yards, 4 TDs, 13.4 YPC The only tight end appearing on this list, the former Purdue Boilermaker adds even more depth to one of the most fearsome receiving rooms in the country. The top tight end in the portal brings with him an elite seam-bursting ability that new full-time starter Julian Sayin will certainly appreciate. Look for Klare to benefit in the short to intermediate areas of the field as opposing defenses key in on the rest of the Buckeyes' top talents. Ryan Day sure did land a true unicorn at the position. 7. Carnell Tate, Ohio State 2024 Stats: 52 catches, 733 yards, 4 TDs, 14.1 YPC The second Ohio State player on this list, Carnell Tate is a name that should be heard much more often than it was last season. Despite all the hype surrounding the breakout of Jeremiah Smith and Emeka Egbuka's swan song, Tate quietly had almost 740 yards and proved that he could be the ultimate beneficiary of opposing defenses keying in on those two studs. It particularly became clear that he was a true rising star in the CFP semifinal, when he led the Ohio State receiving corps with six catches for 87 yards, making a huge difference in a tight game. Look for him to continue to be a thorn in opponent's sides should they continue to ignore him. 6. Makai Lemon, USC 2024 Stats: 52 catches, 764 yards, 3 TDs, 14.7 YPC Heading into his junior year with the Trojans, Makai Lemon has certainly stepped into a leadership role both on and off the field. However, it's his thrilling ability to put points on the board continuously no matter what role he's in that delights USC fans. One of the best all-around athletes in the Big Ten, not only did he lead the Trojans in catches, but was an exhilaratingly fantastic kick returner as well, finishing sixth in the nation in returns. Look for him and new starter Jayden Maiava to be a fascinating QB-WR tandem this year with much more fun to come. 5. Denzel Boston, Washington 2024 Stats: 63 catches, 834 yards, 9 TDs, 13.2 YPC The Huskies could be a fun and frisky team in the Big Ten this year, and Denzel Boston will play a large role in determining just that. The leading receiver from last year and eighth all time in UW history, Boston's size and speed combo should continue to terrorize opposing defenses for at least another year. Look for this year to be all about Boston's draft stock as he could either remain a mid first round pick or fall precipitously. Either way, he will be a key catalyst for the Huskies' season, whether they be good or bad. 4. Trebor Pena, Penn State 2024 Stats: 84 catches, 941 yards, 9 TDs, 11.2 YPC The first transfer portal addition on this list for the Nittany Lions, Trebor Pena could also turn out to be the shiny new WR1 Drew Allar is looking for. With the departure of Tyler Warren, Pena could become the new utility man for Penn State down the field Allar will be looking to connect with constantly. Also, don't be surprised if there are a couple jet sweeps implemented within the Penn State playbook this year for Pena. Without a doubt, Pena is the icing on the cake for a stellar transfer class for a Penn State squad dreaming of a championship. 3. Elijah Sarratt, Indiana 2024 Stats: 53 catches, 957 yards, 8 TDs, 18.1 YPC The only Hoosier on this list, the young man they affectionately call Waffle House will have a heavy weight to carry come this fall. In order for Indiana to build upon their surprise season last year, Sarratt will have to be even more big-time than last year. The former JMU man will almost certainly increase his target share especially with Cal transfer Fernando Mendoza at the helm. Indiana will surprise no one this year, but if Sarratt stays consistent in his junior season, Curt Cignetti and Co. could continue to shock. 2. Devonte Ross, Penn State 2024 Stats: 76, 1,043 yards, 11 TDs, 13.7 YPC The second transfer portal addition for the Nittany Lions, the former Troy Trojan is the perfect complement to Pena's speed. If Pena can play in the slot, look for Ross to be more of an outside threat. Despite his height, don't let that fool you from denying his big play ability. His 11 touchdowns, fifth most nationally attest to that. Add that he is just the six player in Troy's history to eclipse the 1'00 yard receiving mark, and Penn State may have just found themselves a hidden gem at a position of need. 1. Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State 2024 Stats: 76 catches, 1,315 yards, 15 TDs, 17.3 YPC There are no superlatives too lofty when describing Jeremiah Smith. After all, he may just be the best college football wide receiver we will see in our lifetime. And he still has at the very least two years of eligibility remaining. He shattered Cris Carter's freshman receiving records for the Buckeyes, had the fourth most receiving yards in a season in Ohio State history, had the second most receiving touchdowns in school as a freshman. Even when opposing teams hone in on him, he is dangerous because of the players around him. You can slow him down, but never overwhelm him. Teams will try it all next season, starting with Texas coming up to the Shoe for revenge. It will be at their own peril. Follow Nittany Lions Wire on X, Facebook, and Threads.

Landon Duckworth pays surprise visit to Auburn, sets commitment timeline

Landon Duckworth pays surprise visit to Auburn, sets commitment timeline Duckworth visited Auburn over the weekend to develop relationships with coaches and players. Auburn football received surprising, yet wonderful news last week when Landon Duckworth shared that his focus will be on two schools, Auburn and South Carolina, from now on. Following his announcement, he paid a visit to Auburn over the weekend to spend time with coaches and players. Duckworth, a four-star quarterback from Jackson High School in Jackson, Alabama, told Cole Pinkston of Auburn Live that he wanted to visit Auburn for the weekend after cancelling visits to Florida State and Ole Miss to spend time with coaches and continue developing relationships. 'Oh yeah, it was important most definitely,' Duckworth said of spending time with Auburn's coaches. 'It was a free weekend, and I haven't really been up here a lot since the new coaches have been here. I thought I needed to come back and see the coaching staff and get a better relationship with them.' The only area of concern with Auburn's interest in Duckworth is the signing of Deuce Knight, who just signed with Auburn as a member of the 2025 recruiting class. Duckworth says that Knight's signing will not play a factor in his decision, citing that there will be quarterback competition no matter where he signs. Instead, he is focusing on building a relationship with Knight, who he has encountered several times. 'I knew him while he was in high school and we've talked over Instagram. We trained at Quarterback Country a few times. Now he's here so we've gotten even closer," Duckworth said of Knight. "He hits me up and we hang out every time I come here.' Now that Duckworth is down to two schools, when will he decide on a winner? Duckworth says that he does not have a cemented date, but his commitment could come in July. Duckworth is the No. 3 player from Alabama for the 2026 recruiting cycle, and the No. 6 quarterback of the class according to 247Sports rankings. If Auburn can land Duckworth, it will do wonders for its 2026 class that has slipped in the rankings recently, and will build momentum toward winning the state of Alabama again. Auburn has one top-10 Alabama commitment at this point of the cycle, and a potential commitment from Duckworth could bring a spark. Suns grab Florida basketball star Walter Clayton Jr. in latest CBS Sports mock draft

Former Florida basketball guard Walter Clayton Jr. is projected to be drafted by the Phoenix Suns with the 29th overall pick in CBS Sports' latest NBA mock draft. Clayton is coming off one of the most decorated seasons in program history. The 6-foot-2-inch guard set a single-season school record with 713 points, captured Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors and shot 38.6% from three-point range while leading Florida to a national championship. Advertisement CBS Sports' Gary Parrish praised Clayton's "unique shot-making profile," noting that the former Iona transfer averaged 22.3 points and hit 43.5 percent from beyond the arc over six NCAA Tournament games. Phoenix could view Clayton as a potential instant-offense option off the bench, thanks to his deep range and proven clutch gene. His winning polished game and winning pedigree also make him an attractive selection during the late first-round window. Here is everything Parrish said about Clayton and why he thinks the Suns will draft him in the 2025 NBA draft. What CBS Sports said about Clayton "Clayton was the star of Florida's national title run while averaging 22.3 points on 43.5% shooting from beyond the arc in those six NCAA Tournament games. There are concerns about his decision-making and approach to defense, but the Most Outstanding Player of the 2025 Final Four is such a skilled and unique shotmaker that he's worthy of a serious look this deep in the first round by a Phoenix franchise that probably needs to hit the reset button."
