Kelantan expands anti-drug ‘jihad' after successful pilot, aims for 50pc reduction by 2030
State Youth, Sports, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and Community Unity Committee chairman Zamakshari Muhammad said the initiative will be expanded following the success of a pilot project in Pasir Mas, carried out in collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police, the National Anti-Drug Agency, penghulu and mosque imams.
'Additionally, we will engage with several other agencies to further strengthen the integrated jihad against drugs,' he told Bernama after opening the Kelantan-level National Security and Unity town hall session at Dataran Muhammadi here yesterday.
Zamakshari, who is also the chairman of the Kelantan branch of Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam), stressed that the state government will not compromise on the issue and will continue to provide full cooperation to all authorities to eradicate drug problems from the grassroots.
'We don't just want to control the symptoms; we want to tackle the root causes of the problem to build a safer and more dignified state for future generations. Everyone must work together, because this issue knows no political party, religion, or race,' he said. — Bernama

Inquest into Zara Qairina's death begins tomorrow in Kota Kinabalu
KOTA KINABALU: The inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir will commence tomorrow at the Kota Kinabalu Coroner's Court. DPM Fadillah urges calm, says early investigation lapses in Zara Qairina case addressed
KUCHING, Aug 17 — The negligence in the initial investigation over Zara Qairina Mahathir's case in Sabah has been addressed, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has assured. According to him, the process after this is further investigation on whether or not any individuals will be charged. 'As Malaysians, let's just leave the matter to the police, and legal action will be taken accordingly. 'Let's not resort to creating negative sentiments that can destroy the peace of our country,' he said when met by reporters after attending a function at Jalan Sultan Tengah here yesterday. Zara Qairina, 13, was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, on July 17, a day after she was found unconscious in a drain near here school hostel at around 4am. Adding on, Fadillah expressed hope that everyone would continue to show respect for the nation's judiciary system, policing system and the integrity of the health system. 'This is not the time for people to politicise this issue — an act that may jeopardise the prevailing harmony. 'Allow time for the authorities to investigate transparently until a decision is made. 'If there is indeed an injustice involved, we will see to it that a fairer and more transparent action be taken. 'Right now, let this matter take its course since investigations are underway,' he said. The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC), on August 8, announced that the girl's body would be exhumed to allow post-mortem to be conducted, stating that further investigations by the police were necessary to ensure that all aspects of the case would be thoroughly examined. — The Borneo Post

Gemencheh primary school headmistress, 44, dies after collapsing in teachers' room
TAMPIN, Aug 17 — A Chinese national-type primary school headmistress in Gemencheh near here passed away after losing consciousness in the teachers' room today. Tampin police chief Supt Amiruddien Sariman said they received a report regarding the incident at 11.25 am and were informed that the victim had been resting in her room as she was feeling unwell. 'Initial investigations found that the 44-year-old woman had (earlier) attended the school's Entrepreneur Day Programme. 'At 9 am, the victim's colleague found her unconscious and she was taken to Gemencheh Health Clinic, where she was pronounced dead by the attending doctor,' he said in a statement today. Amiruddien said the deceased was sent to the Forensic Department of Tampin Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the cause of death, and the case has been classified as sudden death (SDR). — Bernama
