Lionel Messi name-dropped six stars including Cristiano Ronaldo as best in world

Daily Mirror18-05-2025

Lionel Messi has been widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time, but the Argentine has also been gracious in handing out praise to team-mates and rivals alike
Lionel Messi has picked out six footballers who he deems to be world-class. Despite his own status as arguably the greatest player in football history, the Argentine star has always been gracious in acknowledging the skills and talents of both former team-mates and competitors.
With a trophy cabinet boasting 12 league titles, 17 domestic cups, four Champions Leagues, eight Ballon d'Ors, and a World Cup, it's no secret that the Barcelona, PSG and Inter Miami legend is set to be remembered as one of the finest players to ever step onto the pitch.

Yet, even at 37, Messi remains modest when reflecting on the abilities of those around him. So, who are the six players that Messi has lauded over the years?

Cristiano Ronaldo
One of the few players who could feasibly contest Messi's GOAT (Greatest of All Time) title, Cristiano Ronaldo has regularly received praise from his long-time rival. The pair faced off in numerous El Clasico clashes during Messi's tenure at Barcelona and Ronaldo's time with Real Madrid.
And with an equally impressive array of trophies to his name, it's easy to see why some might favour CR7 in the debate over who is the superior player. However, instead of focusing on the differences, Messi has increasingly expressed admiration for the Al-Nassr star, who continues to shine in the Saudi Pro League at 40 years old.
Messi once said of him: "Cristiano Ronaldo is an extraordinary player and it would be brilliant to be in the same team as him. I do not know if that will happen one day, but I would like it to as he is spectacular."
Luis Suarez
As Luis Suarez spent six years alongside Messi as part of the famous MSN attacking trio with Neymar Jr, it's easy to see why the Argentinian has endlessly sung the striker's praises. When Suarez announced his retirement from international football in September with his nation of Uruguay, Messi took to Instagram to write: "You're unique, Luis Suárez, both on and off the field. I care about you a lot."
During his stint with Barcelona, Suarez scored 195 goals in 283 appearances, lifting four La Liga trophies, six domestic cups, and a Champions League. And with the two already clinching a Supporters Shield with one another at Inter Miami, the chemistry between the two is undeniable.

As Xavi had already been a key figure at Barcelona for six years when Messi emerged from the club's youth system in Catalonia, it's no surprise that Lionel has always looked up to the Spanish legend throughout his career. Previously speaking on the midfielder, Messi said: "Xavi, it's difficult to describe him as a player – everybody in the world knows what he can do on the field.
"He's a player who dictates the rhythm of the game, he can put the ball where he wants, he reads the game excellently. It's been a pleasure to play alongside him for so long and to be able to enjoy his football – not just in games but in training sessions as well.

"He is the best player in the history of Spanish football – I think that says everything."
Given the array of talent Lionel Messi has encountered throughout his illustrious career, his views on Xavi are not to be taken lightly.

The duo shared 11 years of success at Barcelona, collecting a plethora of trophies before Xavi moved on to Al Sadd for the twilight of his playing days.
Sergio Ramos
Sergio Ramos, much like Ronaldo, spent many years going toe-to-toe with Messi in the fiery El Clasico derbies representing Real Madrid. Renowned for his tough-tackling style, Ramos was a fixture in the Madrid defence for 16 years from 2005 to 2021, and Messi has openly admitted that Ramos was often the opponent he'd clash with most on the field.

Discussing their on-pitch confrontations, Messi said: "We fought a lot with Sergio Ramos. We later became teammates, but [before] in the Clásicos, we always grabbed each other. The Clásicos were intense."
Eventually, the two football giants set aside their rivalry and joined forces at PSG from 2021 to 2023, where they added two Ligue 1 titles and a Trophee des Champions to their already impressive hauls.
The mutual admiration is apparent, with Ramos having lauded Messi as "the best player football ever produced".

Kylian Mbappe
Messi formed a strong bond with Kylian Mbappe during their stint together at PSG, despite it lasting only two years. In a chat with TUDN, Messi said of the Frenchman: "Kylian is a different player.
"He's a beast, he's very strong one-on-one, he finds space and he's very quick. He can score a lot of goals, he's a very complete player and he's been showing that for years. In the next few years he'll be among the very best, no doubt about it."

Although Messi might have hoped to see the 26-year-old at Barcelona after his PSG tenure, Mbappe chose to join Real Madrid, where he has excelled in 2024/25
Karim Benzema
Messi also had to contend with Karim Benzema during his time at Barcelona, a formidable striker who netted a whopping 354 goals for Real Madrid from 2009 to 2023. Despite never being teammates, Messi hasn't held back his admiration for Benzema.

Speaking on Benzema winning the Ballon d'Or in 2022, Messi said: "I think Benzema was a fair winner. He deserves it for the great year he had and what he has been doing throughout his career.
"He is a wonderful player and I think it is important for him and for soccer that he has this recognition."
Benzema bid farewell to Los Blancos in 2023 to join the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ittihad, boasting four La Liga titles and five Champions Leagues as testament to his successful tenure.

PSG president explains strict transfer rule Luis Enrique says they must follow

Luis Enrique has changed the way that Paris Saint-Germain approach transfers, with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi explaining how they now conduct business under the Spanish manager Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has explained the rule Luis Enrique has enforced since joining the club that helped them win the Champions League. PSG claimed their maiden title in the competition by destroying Inter Milan 5-0 on May 31 – and a great deal of the credit went to manager Enrique. The French giants had faltered in Europe's premier club competition in previous years, but triumphed with a team packed full of young guns. Their new look under Enrique was highlighted by Desire Doue – the 20-year-old attacker who scored twice in the final. ‌ He was signed from Rennes for €50million (£42m) in August 2024 to form a part of the young spine of Enrique's side. PSG also signed Joao Neves (19), William Pacho (22) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (24) during the 2024/25 season, all of whom started the thrashing of Inter. ‌ Al-Khelaifi says that focus on youth will continue while Enrique remains the manager. "He is the best coach to develop young players,' he told Qatari broadcaster Al-Kass. 'He likes young players. For example, buying a 28 or 27-year-old player is impossible for him, forbidden, he absolutely does not want it. 'He likes all players who are 21 or 22 years old. Have you noticed the latest players we have recruited? The oldest is 23 or 24, no more. "Luis Enrique likes a fighting spirit, he likes a player who gives his all, who runs a lot on the pitch, who is generous in his effort. How do we work? [Sporting director] Luis Campos has to present the player to the coach. The coach has to study how he plays, his value, his price and other aspects. 'There has to be an agreement, an agreement between everyone, even if each has their role. For everything that concerns scouting, it is Luis Enrique who has to approve the player. He has to be convinced that the player fits into his future project. Then, we, the management, also give our approval.' HAVE YOUR SAY! Can PSG sustain their form next season? Comment below. ‌ Al-Khelaifi also used the interview to fire shots at former PSG striker Kylian Mbappe, who left for Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer, only to end his debut season trophyless. PSG won the treble without him, with Enrique claiming the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France and the Champions League to give his president ammunition. "It's easier to score goals in La Liga than in Ligue 1," Al-Khelaifi said. "Luis Enrique proudly represented Ligue 1 and defended it against Premier League fans who called it the Farmers' League. "We ended up beating Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal in the Champions League this season. Nobody thought we would win the title. We approached the Champions League step by step.' Luciano Spalletti to leave Italy head coach role after Moldova match

The 66-year-old announced the news during his press conference ahead of Monday's World Cup qualifier against Moldova. Spalletti came under pressure after his country's campaign began with Friday evening's 3-0 defeat away to Norway. Italy vs. Moldova will be Luciano Spalletti's last game as Azzurri head coach.#Azzurri #VivoAzzurro — Italy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (@Azzurri_En) June 8, 2025 His imminent departure – after he takes charge of the Group I meeting with Moldova in Reggio Emilia – was later confirmed by the Italian Football Federation. 'I spoke with (federation president Gabriele) Gravina last night and he informed me that I will be relieved of my duties as national team coach,' Spalletti told a press conference, according to The Athletic. 'I am disappointed: given the relationship we have, I had no intention of stepping down. Especially when things are not going well, I would have preferred to stay and do my job. 'However, it is a dismissal and I have to accept it. Defeat in Oslo. #Azzurri #VivoAzzurro — Italy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (@Azzurri_En) June 6, 2025 'I have always seen this role as a service to my country and I want to facilitate the future of the national team. I think it is right to seek the best solution.' Former Roma and Inter Milan coach Spalletti succeeded Euro 2020 winner Roberto Mancini as Azzurri boss in 2023 after guiding Napoli to the Serie A title. He has won only 11 of his 23 matches in charge of the national team and oversaw a last-16 exit to Switzerland at Euro 2024.

It feels like we're a group of mates – Skipper Harry Brook hails England unity

Brook has won five on the bounce against the West Indies since taking over from Jos Buttler, sweeping the tourists 3-0 in the ODI leg and going 2-0 up with one to play in the T20s. England did not have it easy in Sunday's four-wicket win at Bristol, with the asking rate climbing past 11 an over at one stage as they chased down a stiff target of 197. IT20 series win secured! 🔒 Victory in Bristol 🙌 Banton and Carse see us home 👏 Match Centre: — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 8, 2025 But they stuck together to get over the line, with five of their top six making handy contributions before Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton took the bull by the horns. The middle-order duo hammered 56 off just 21 deliveries between them to puncture the West Indian resistance and keep the good times rolling for Brook. It was the kind of game England were losing in the difficult final days under Buttler, whose reign ended with eight straight defeats across both formats. But there is a new lighter feeling around the group – including the newly liberated former skipper, who has top-scored with 96 and 47 in the last two games. 'It feels like we're a group of mates. We're just going out and having fun,' said Brook. 'It's been nice for me. The results are awesome and we're really enjoying it. We're having a good time out there. 'At the end of games we go around the circle and Baz (head coach Brendon McCullum) asks if anybody has anything to say. In every game so far someone has stood up and said something. I think that's a great way of showing how the team is at the minute and we feel a proper togetherness.' The West Indies made England sweat at times, taking 82 off their last five overs including an unexpected tirade against Adil Rashid in the 19th. For so long the team's most bankable bowler, the leg-spinner shipped five sixes and 31 runs in what goes down as the second most expensive over by an English bowler in T20s. Stuart Broad holds the unwanted record of 36, taken for six off every ball by Yuvraj Singh at the 2007 World Cup. Brook, though, insists he and his team were never rattled. 'I'm always very chilled. We knew that there was going to be one, two, maybe three big overs,' he said. From a different angle 📐 All 25 of our boundaries! 💥#ENGvWI | #EnglandCricket — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 8, 2025 'On a pitch that size, with 60-metre boundaries nearly all the way around, we accepted that before the game and we knew we could get big overs as well. 'The way Bants went about his business, getting 30 off 11 balls having never really batted in the middle order before was just awesome.' The West Indies have one more chance to avoid a winless tour in Southampton on Tuesday but head coach Daren Sammy paid tribute to Akeal Hosein, who took the field just six hours after arriving from the Caribbean following visa delays. 'He said to me, 'there's no way I'm not playing',' Sammy explained. 'Kudos to him, he turned up for us. An eight-hour flight straight into a game is not ideal but it shows his commitment.'
