15 Celebrities You Genuinely Didn't Know Dated

Buzz Feed28-02-2025

Some celebrity couples were together for so long or were so public with their romance that everyone knew they were an item. However, others might have only dated briefly or in private, making it difficult to know they were ever together.
Here are 15 celebrities you didn't know dated.
1. In the '90s, Tyra Banks dated director John Singleton. His credits include the critically acclaimed movie Boyz n the Hood, the cult classic Baby Boy, and the TV show Snowfall. The pair met in 1993 when John approached her to appear in his 1995 movie Higher Learning and soon began dating. "When I read for the part, I had been dating John for four months," Tyra confessed to WWD, denying speculation that she got the part because they were in a relationship. Their romance is said to have ended in 1996, but Tyra seemed to still hold John in high regard, even paying tribute to him after he died in 2019.
2. The same year of their reported breakup, Tyra had a brief romance with singer Seal. While little is known about their relationship, Seal says they've remained friendly since the split. "We bump into each other every now and then," he told Andy Cohen in 2016, adding he and Tyra have "no" drama.
3. In 2023, Victoria Monét confirmed longstanding rumors that she'd dated Kehlani — and that her 2020 song "Touch Me (Remix)" was inspired by their relationship. Although she didn't go into great detail about the romance, she did say she and the "After Hours" singer remain on good terms. "[We're] friends," she said on the High Low podcast with Emily Ratajkowski. "I kind of am like that with all of my past relationships." According to Victoria, she tries to stay on cordial terms with all of her exes because it takes too much "energy to try to avoid people" and "hate them."
4. Nia Long and Chris Rock were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. "He was on Saturday Night Live," Nia recalled to Uncensored, placing the time between 1990 and 1993. "We went out. We hated each other. I was like, 'This dude is not even that fucking funny.'" On top of that, Chris gave her a fake number. Chris said he did so "purposely" because Nia was kind of "obnoxious." As an example, he pointed to one part of their conversation when he asked whether Nia was dating anyone, recalling that she replied, "No, but I know where to get some dick if I need it." Although it made Chris not want to go out with her again, they still managed to form a friendship, even laughing at the ordeal during a 2009 appearance on The Wendy Williams Show.
5. Taraji P. Henson and Hill Harper dated for two years. According to Hill, it was a "wonderful relationship" — it just didn't work out. "Just because you're in a healthy, great relationship that ends doesn't mean it wasn't successful or it was a failure," he told Unsung Hollywood. "Not all relationships are meant to end in marriage." However, Hill admitted that some of his relationships had also been impacted by his "fear of commitment," which he said "probably" stemmed from his parents' divorce.
6. In 2020, Bow Wow reportedly revealed that Lil Wayne and Solange had allegedly secretly dated. According to Uproxx, he was on Clubhouse when he "let [it] slip," apparently, thinking it was already public knowledge. While Bow Wow didn't say when the romance occurred, Lil Wayne has been a close collaborator of the Knowles family in the past. He notably featured on and appeared in the video for Destiny's Child's 2004 single "Soldier" alongside Solange. He and Solange also collaborated on her 2016 single "Mad" from her magnum opus, A Seat at the Table.
7. Before his marriages to Sheree Zampino and Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith dated Pepa from the iconic '80s rap group Salt-N-Pepa. According to Will, it happened "sometime in early '88" and came after Will had been crushing on her for some time. They went on one date, and from there, things just kind of fizzled. "I really wasn't feeling him," Pepa reportedly told Global Grind. "I guess I couldn't appreciate a nice guy like Will Smith. He wasn't thug enough. I was attracted to thugs and hoodlums. Will was too nice to me."
8. Garcelle Beauvais started dating Will after meeting him on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. She said it wasn't a "long-lasting" relationship — and that she ended it after learning Will was getting serious with his now-wife Jada Pinkett Smith. "I remember one day calling him, and he was in the car. And his son, with Sheree, [they] were in the back," she recalled, referencing Will's first son, Trey. "So you know, he picked up on the car or Bluetooth or whatever it was back in the day, or speakerphone — whatever it was — and he said, 'Hey, how are you doing?' And I said, 'I'm great.'' That's when she heard Trey ask Will if he was talking to Jada. "That's when I was like, okay — I'm not the only one. Exit stage left," she laughed.
9. Janet Jackson and Q-Tip first collaborated on 1993's Poetic Justice and again on Janet's 1997 song "Got 'Til It's Gone." "We started dating after that," Q-Tip said in an interview with rapper Math Hoffa. "It'd be cool and shit. She be making eggs and shit, and I'll be chilling like, 'Yo, that's Penny!' to myself," he said, referring to Janet's iconic Good Times character. "We're still friends. I love her to death."
10. In 2024, Joyner Lucas revealed that he had privately dated Ashanti for two years. While he wouldn't say when the romance occurred, he did say, "She's an amazing person." He described their relationship as "dope" and said the breakup resulted from them being in two different places. "I don't feel like I could've fulfilled [her needs] at that time," he told Jason Lee. "[She's] been in the game for 25 years; I just got in the game. I know what she wanted and what she needed. I don't feel like I was in a place in my life where I could commit to that. ... But, you know, I'm happy she got [her] way. I'm happy she spun the block with Nelly, and now she's having a baby. I'm super proud of her … She's gonna be an amazing mom. I would tell her that all the time."
11. Bad Boy rapper Shyne dated Brandy in the late 1990s. He said the relationship caused friction with Diddy because Brandy had also been dating fellow Bad Boy rapper Ma$e — and blew up after one particularly heated disagreement. He told The Breakfast Club, "We had an argument and she said, 'Yo, you're nobody. You ain't sell one record. You think you stylin', you think you're that, you're nothing. You haven't sold a record,' and that hit me like the hand of God, because she was right.'" He'd later have a hit with his 2000 song, " Bad Boyz."
12. In 2022, The Game reportedly revealed that he'd dated Mýa, claiming he "manifested" the romance after shouting her out in his 2005 song, "Dreams." Apparently, it ended when he stood her up on a date for another woman. "We were supposed to spend Valentine's Day together in Miami," he said. "On that day, I pulled up on my [now] baby mama ... I'm in my Bentley, and she was in a Benz, and she looked good," so, "we kicked it with each other." According to him, Mya rightfully "dumped the fuck" out of him when she found out.
13. In 2012, while addressing speculation about his relationship with Lauren London, Trey Songz confirmed they had been "lovers" before. "I'm gonna say this right now, Lauren London is a very important person to me. I love her to death," he said on radio station 106KMEL. "Is she my woman? No. We are great friends and, yes, we have been lovers before. And I'm saying this right now 'cause I'm tired of people asking me about that shit."
14. In 2013, Drake told Ellen he once went out with Tyra Banks. "We went to Disneyland in disguise actually," he shared, "which was fun." Drake said they remained "close," and in 2016, Tyra even appeared in his "Childs Play" music video.
15. Finally, in 2001, Kamala Harris dated TV host Montel Williams. Neither of them has ever extensively talked about their romance, but here they are at a rare outing, attending a benefit together.

‘Materialists' Review: Dakota Johnson Measures Value Of Love Between Chris Evans And Pedro Pascal in Celine Song's Sublime Romcomdram

Watching writer-director Celine Song's follow-up to her feature debut, indie darling and 2023 Best Picture Oscar nominee Past Lives, all sorts of supposed cinematic influences ran through my mind from Billy Wilder's The Apartment to James L. Brooks' Broadcast News to Mike Nichols' Working Girl and just about anything from Nora Ephron. I left the screening thinking I had just seen the best movie about the search for love in many years. Call it a romcom, call it a romdram or any shorthand attempt to categorize it, but this is a movie that defies that kind of easy description. But on its surface, Materialists easily recalls so many Hollywood confections where the girl is torn between two guys vying for her eternal love. In this case, though, it is a lot more complicated for Lucy, a character perfectly matched with a never-better Dakota Johnson, who, as a matchmaker in a high-end New York City agency called Adore, has a great track record for hooking up others but not herself. Fast-food TV matchmaking The Bachelor this is not. More from Deadline Chris Evans On 'Avengers: Doomsday': "It's Sad To Not Be Back With The Band" 'How To Train Your Dragon' Won't Be Laggin' At Summer Box Office With $175M-$185M Global Start For Live-Action Redo - Preview 'Eddington' Trailer: Joaquin Phoenix Gets Into Standoff With Pedro Pascal In A24's Covid-Era Western From Filmmaker Ari Aster Song actually worked as a matchmaker when she was a struggling NY playwright, and clearly that was the inspiration, or kernel of an idea, to follow up such a widely praised feature debut as Past Lives which in its own unique way has its lead female caught up in a different way between two men and two times of life. It too defied easy definition and, coupled with Materialists, confirms Song one of the most exciting new filmmaking voices of her generation. So Lucy makes about $80,000 a year trying to find perfect matches for high-end clients with a checklist of wants in finding the ideal partner. Vignettes with some of them are hilarious, both for men who want to stop at age 29 as consideration for a match or women with their own quirky needs. In this world, love is a negotiation, and in Lucy's mind — personally and professionally — money is a big part of the attraction. This goes back to her own experience as we see in a quick flashback to the fifth-anniversary date with her boyfriend John (Chris Evans). Both were struggling actors when they met, John had no money, a beat-up car and lived with two obnoxious roommates. On this anniversary date, we see it all blow up as Lucy finally realizes she is sick of being poor, or at least with John. They break up, time passes, and now at the wedding of one of her successful matches, Lucy is a guest and runs into John working with the catering company. We can still see sparks, but it is clearly over. At the same nuptials she meets Harry (Pedro Pascal), brother of the groom, who looks like he has just come out of Central Casting. He's a rich, successful commodities broker living in a $12 million penthouse, suave, charming, handsome — you name it. She calls these 'perfect' guys unicorns, and does not try to pick him up for herself but instead as a potential date and a surefire winner for any number of her female clients. It turns out, and yes in classic romcom fashion, Harry has no interest in them, only in Lucy, and this does lead to the matchmaker checking off her own list and doing something rather unprofessional by caving to Harry's advances. But will it become true love or just another negotiation, one that Harry is just as comfortable entering into as Lucy thinks she is? Meanwhile, John comes in and out of the picture, reminding us he is the one who still loves Lucy for who she was, even if she doesn't quite know now who she is. Song has cast her three leads to perfection. Johnson nails all the insecurity beneath the surface of this seemingly assured businesswoman and is superb in what might be her best screen outing yet. Evans, always a better actor than he is given credit for, doesn't miss a beat as a guy still struggling as an actor and as a man trying to find his true love, and knowing he probably already did – the one that got away. Pascal, in a role that could have been one-dimensional, gives Harry genuine humanity and likability. This is someone we also can root for, and in a key scene where he reveals his surprising vulnerability (it has to do with a kind of plastic surgery I never knew existed), he is heartbreakingly real. The standout among the supporting cast is Zoe Winters, an Adore client who first gets rejected by a match she was willing to settle for and then, in highly dramatic fashion, as the victim of sexual assault by another match set up by Lucy, who understandably is devastated when she learns of the disastrous date she felt responsible for. This sequence goes into much darker territory than any in the genre usually do, but it also feels right in this day and age to address it. Also fine is Marin Ireland as Lucy's boss, a woman who has seen it all, and Louise Jacobson, who turned from Adore client to bride. I have to say another main star of this film is New York City itself, seen as the backdrop of so many romantic comedies but here beautifully shot by cinematographer Shabier Kirchner and dressed by production designer Anthony Gasparro as a city where the perfect match is hard to light. A montage sequence featuring the lilting Harry Nilsson song, 'I Guess the Lord Must Be In New York City' is a true highlight (trivia fact: Nilsson wrote that song for Midnight Cowboy, but it was replaced instead by 'Everybody's Talking (at Me).' Another shout-out goes to Daniel Pemberton's nicely nuanced music score. Materialists comes at the right time for a 'genre' that studios have forgotten audiences still want, and hopefully it will stand out as a nice alternative in a summer of tentpoles and action. Song has made a film that oddly can be admired by romantic purists and cynics, a movie whose end credits take place over the sight of a hugely busy New York Marriage Bureau visually assuring us sometimes people do find that elusive match, or at least hope so. Producers are Song, Christine Vachon, Pamela Koffler and David Hinojosa. Miley Cyrus, Parker Posey, Riley Keough & More Celebrate ‘Through Her Lens' With Chanel and Tribeca

On Friday afternoon, a Chanel-heavy crowd gathered against a leafy green backdrop on the corner outside of Locanda Verde in Tribeca, as neighbors crossed over straining to get a look. The commotion was in honor of the annual Chanel and Tribeca 'Through Her Lens' luncheon, celebrating the Tribeca Chanel Women's Filmmaker Program, now in its 10th year. Miley Cyrus, who has been in town promoting her new album 'Something Beautiful,' was especially excited about the Tribeca film 'My Mom Jayne,' directed by Mariska Hargitay, about her late mother, Jayne Mansfield. More from WWD EXCLUSIVE: Chanel Launches Circular Materials Hub Nevold Global Fashion Agenda Addresses Sustainability's Struggles: Uncertainty Looms Amid Policy Shifts, Economic Pressures and Tariffs Lucy Liu Pairs Santoni Platform Sandals With Floral Monique Lhuillier Gown at Tribeca Film Festival 'Jayne Mansfield has been a very important figure in my life,' Cyrus said. 'The critique of her career for embracing her sensuality and her sexuality, and I know that she was banned from movie theaters and was shunned for feeling her sexuality, and I have experienced that in my life as well. And so I've always just really admired her for what she means to culture so many years later.' Cyrus was head to toe in black Chanel, wearing look 55 from the Metier d'Art 2024/2025 collection. While the singer has worn the brand many times over her career, she has a soft spot for some of her earlier pieces. 'My personal gifts from Karl [Lagerfeld]. When Karl was here, he said 'You're one of the ones that buys, not borrows,' so he brought me a lot of gifts,' Cyrus said of her Chanel favorites. Lucy Liu was just a few hours away from the Tribeca premiere of her film 'Rosemead.' 'I am so excited, and very nervous, but really anxious to get this in front of an audience and have them absorb it and have something like this as a voice,' she said. Carrie Coon looked effortlessly cool in a large pair of Chanel shades, a leather jacket and gray jeans. Between her 'White Lotus' character Laurie and her 'Gilded Age' character Bertha, she said that Bertha would be much more at home at a Chanel luncheon. 'Well Laurie would get drunk and would make a scene,' Coon said. 'Bertha would know exactly how to conduct herself. And know who to talk to.' 'The Gilded Age,' which will screen for an event during Tribeca, returns with its third season later in June. 'We've dispensed with all of the exposition and now it's just quick storytelling. There is a lot of action this year. And of course I have a whole new closet that I get to wear,' Coon said. 'Honestly, my sneaky favorite things are the robes that I get to wear in my bedroom. Not only are they comfortable but they're always gorgeous — though the train makes acting with me very challenging, if you walk behind me.' Other guests included Parker Posey, who waved her white feathered Chanel cape in the breeze as she posed for photos; Hargitay, who chatted with Cyrus on the carpet; Riley Keough, Olivia Munn, Beanie Feldstein, Zosia Mamet, Annie Murphy, Lola Tung, Whitney Peak, Gracie Lawrence, Fina Strazza, Misty Copeland, Jurnee Smollett, Justine Lupe, Rachel Hilson and more. While passed plates, remarks and cocktails awaited inside, Keough was most excited about all the conversations that awaited her throughout the festival. 'I'm really excited to screen our little film and talk to filmmakers and aspiring filmmakers,' she said. 'I love those conversations.' Robert De Niro, Joe Jonas, Allison Janney and More Attend Chanel's 18th Annual Tribeca Artists Dinner

Following Friday's Through Her Lens luncheon, Chanel and Tribeca teamed again on Monday evening for the annual artists dinner, now in its 18th year. Several guests ducked past the step and repeat to head straight into The Odeon, like Robert De Niro, Christy Turlington, Ed Burns and Tory Burch. The rest — Sofia Coppola, Thomas Mars, Jon Hamm, Anna Osceola, Joe Jonas, Allison Janney, Lily James, Kyle McLachlan, Lily Allen, Lucy Liu, Grace Gummer, Louisa Jacobson, Celine Song, Maude Apatow, Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, Maisy Stella, Role Model, Mariska Hargitay, Peter Hermann, Molly Gordon, Chase Sui Wonders, Cooper Hoffman, Alisha Boe, Whitney Peak, Nicole Beharie, Lola Tung, Laufey, Wizkid, Barbara Bush, Tommy Dorfman and Hailey Benton Gates — posed in various Chanel ensembles before mingling over cocktails inside a tented entrance to the restaurant. More from WWD Alexandra Cooper Wears Shiny Strappy Sandals and Matching Corset Dress for 'Call Her Alex' Tribeca Film Festival 2025 Premiere Paris Jackson Styles Botanical Whimsy in Fendi for 2025 Tribeca Film Festival EXCLUSIVE: Chanel Launches Circular Materials Hub Nevold The dinner honors the collection of artists who donated original pieces to the filmmakers of the 2025 festival filmmaker winners. This year's contributing artists included Alteronce Gumby, Faith Wilding, Jane Dickson, Jeffrey Meris, Lauren Halsey, Marilyn Minter, Naudline Pierre, Raúl de Nieves, Simphiwe Ndzube and Tuan Andrew Nguyen. On the red carpet, Blake Lively made a surprise appearance, hours after a judge dismissed Justin Baldoni's lawsuit against Lively and Ryan Reynolds. She was ushered past James, who was waiting to walk onto the carpet, and later turned back to apologize to the actress. James was in town for the Tribeca premiere of her thriller 'Relay,' in which she stars with Riz Ahmed. 'We shot the movie in New York so to be able to have our American launch here felt potent and right and I just loved watching the movie — I hadn't seen it on a big screen so it was really special,' James said of the premiere, which was Sunday evening. 'It's a thriller so you can feel the energy in the room. You could feel that the audience was really with us. Riz Ahmed is so wonderful and I just felt really proud,' James added. 'It's so wonderful to see movies in a cinema, on a big screen.' Janney was fresh off presenting at the Tony Awards, which she did alongside Bryan Cranston; the two costar in the Tribeca movie 'Everything's Going to Be Great.' 'To be able to come to this dinner is such fun for me, because I've always wanted to be able to come and I've always been too busy,' Janney said, wearing a golden Chanel trenchcoat with embellished buttons. 'It was actually the first thing I tried on that they sent for me and I was like 'yes please. And more,'' Janney said of the look. 'I love it.' The following day, the actress was off to Rome to film a movie for Ridley Scott, 'one of my heroes.' In the midst of the work schedule she fully plans to make time for some Roman fun. 'Oh, you better believe I will,' she said. 'I'm going to do some shopping and walking around and eating gelato and all the things you do when you're in Rome.' Sui Wonders, who stars in the series 'The Studio,' was naturally in a Chanel look for the night, something not too far off for her character Quinn. 'I wore a lot of Chanel. I had a vintage Chanel bag that I carried all around Vegas that was incredible, but so much vintage YSL, some vintage Miu Miu,' she said of the costumes. 'There was one vintage Miu Miu top that had naked women on it that was really good. I wanted to keep the Chanel bag so badly, but we have season two so it's all in a warehouse waiting to be used again.' Inside The Odeon, Hamm kissed Gummer's hand and wiggled his finger at James for a hello; Allen chatted with tablemate Nas; Jonas and Gummer compared the art books at their seats, and Role Model, Laufey and Dorfman posed for photos. The waiters stayed busy with orders for martinis and glasses of Champagne as trays of shrimp cocktail hit the tables and the room settled in for dinner.
