BARCELONA might boast easy flights, buzzing bars, and amazing food worth jumping on a plane for.
But after a weekend of cava and chaos, I like to bolt on a few chilled-out days somewhere a bit calmer and just over an hour's drive away from the bustling city.

Just along the coast is the perfect escape: Tossa de Mar - a charming beach town that feels worlds away from Barcelona's busy streets.
While most tour groups might end up in the neighbouring resort of Lloret de Mar - think all-inclusive wristbands and packed beaches - Tossa de Mar is where more locals go.
What's more, it was recently named one of the country's cheapest beach resorts.
Averaging just £508 a week per person, TravelSupermarket's latest report named it one of 'the most affordable Spanish beach destinations for summer 2025'.
That's proper value considering you're not only getting relaxing beach vibes, but a picturesque town brimming with boutique shops, and lots of trendy restaurants and bars all in one.
Even with a name that might make some giggle when said out loud, Tossa really should cost more.
It has history, authentic food, stunning beaches - and after paying for your hotel, you still have enough left for dinner and drinks.
In fact, I was able to tuck into delicious Tapas with wine for two of us, costing us less than £30 altogether.
It might be small, meaning most things were within walking distance and saving us money on taxis, but Tossa de Mar packs a punch.
It has its own castle right on the beach, a pretty marina, and barely any Brits there.
The Spanish region undiscovered by Brits despite seaside views and ancient Roman cities
This also means you won't see as many anti-tourism marches either, compared to the ongoing protests in Barcelona.
In fact, you are more likely to see Korean tourists rather than Brits, after it was made popular by both a TV series and Kpop music video being filmed there.
Top tips on what to do if visiting Tossa de Mar
You can explore cobbled lanes, shop for local crafts, grab a gelato, or head up to the castle for epic sunset views.
The old town, called Vila Vella, is like a medieval picture book boasting quaint stone streets, tiny squares, and loads of independent shops.
In just one afternoon, you can saunter through the shopping streets, climb the ramparts, peek out over the sea, then finish it off with tapas in a chiringuito (beach bar) looking across the waves.
If, like me, you're not here for tourist-trap cafes and chain restaurants, Tossa's food scene is a breath of fresh air.
All over the town, you'll find family-run restaurants where everything's homemade and the prices are reasonable.
One of those is Bar La Lluna - a tiny, family-run gem tucked behind some cobbled backstreets.

With a gorgeous terrace that spills out onto the street, you'll find lovely homemade food, from creamy artichokes to crispy patatas bravas, with a vibe that's chilled but full of charm.
What's more, a table of tapas for two and a few glasses of wine each cost just €30 (£26).
Then there's Restaurante Portal, which does tapas with a twist. It's got a trendy, modern interior and a menu that's more creative than your usual.
I went for the soft-shell crab brioche, and a tortilla de bacalao (cod) - both of which were unreal.
The entire meal, consisting of three tapas plates to share and two main dishes, with drinks, costing just over €50 (£45) for two.
Wash it down with a cocktail and you're set for the night. You can grab an Aperol Spritz here for just €6.80 (£5.90).
After dinner, you can wander through the town and grab dessert from one of the many gelato shops in the square. A cone piled high with different flavours will only set you back a few euros. Try the turrón flavour for something more local.
Just wanting drinks? Canela en Rama is worth a visit. This slick cocktail bar right by the castle with sea views has a real grown-up feel.
The cocktails are expertly made here, with lots of attention to detail. They start at around €12 (£10.50), which is pretty good for such an upmarket place.
I had one of the best cocktails of my trip here, and the staff made me feel like a regular. You can also get a glass of cava for €4 (£3.50) if cocktails aren't your bag.
Generally, evenings in Tossa are mellow - think ice-cold cava, candlelit tables, and the sound of conversation in Spanish or Catalan - not karaoke, kebab stalls or people stilling out of clubs.
Of course, if you really want the cheap beers, head to the local Bar Josep, running since 1966, where you can find pints for under €4.
Bar Savoy is just as cheap with tapas from €1.50 and similarly priced pints.
When to visit the town
As always, July and August are the busiest months to visit Tossa, but even then, the resort stays relatively chilled.
June or September is the sweet spot - warm weather and sunny skies but less hustle.
If you go off-peak (May or October), you'll still get heatwave moments - great for dipping in the Med, roaming the ramparts, and dining outdoors.
Where to stay
When it comes to accommodation, I always stay at Gran Hotel Reymar, which is practically on the beach.
It's a four-star but really affordable. Rooms are fresh, clean and modern, and it's located right in the middle of everything. There's also a big pool and spa area.
Room prices start at around €126 (£110) per night, though that jumps to about €180 (£160) in high season.
If you want something with a bit more character, Hotel Diana is a good pick.

Nestled in a historic Modernist building right on the beach with its own terrace and two bars, it feels stylish, boutique, but still very relaxed.
Double rooms start from around €113 (£99) per night. It's right in the heart of town, super comfy, and ideal for anyone who likes something a bit less cookie-cutter.
Both hotels are within walking distance of the beach, castle and bars - so whether you're into spa days or historic vibes, you're sorted.
How to get there
Getting to Tossa is fuss-free, and you won't need a car.
If you want to fly there directly from the UK, you can get there in just half an hour after landing at Girona airport.
Or, if you're heading there from Barcelona, you can hop on a bus from the city's coach station, Estació del Nord, in roughly one hour and it only costs €12 (£10.20).
It might be more expensive, but if you opt to hire a car, it'll be even easier to explore Tossa's neighbouring towns and resorts, like Platja de Canyelles, or even pop inland to explore the medieval town of Girona.
Flights to Barcelona or Girona from most major UK airports can be picked up from as little as £45 return.
Everything you need to know about visiting Spain
Brits must have at least three months left on their passport from the day they plan to leave the country.
Tourists do not need a visa if visiting for up to 90 days in an 180-day period.
Make sure your passport is stamped on entry and exit.
Travellers may be asked to show hotel booking confirmations and that they have enough money for their stay at the border.
Spain is one hour ahead of the UK.
The country uses the euro with around €10 working out to £8.55.
Flights to Spain from the UK take between 2-4 hours depending on the destination.

Georgia Love has opened up about the very surprising thing that has stolen her heart, just days after her ex Lee Elliott moved out of their house in Melbourne. The 35-year-old former reality TV star recently shared a series of photos from her tropical getaway in picturesque Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. In one charming snapshot, Georgia beamed in a summery ensemble while posing along a scenic walkway adorned with vibrant umbrellas. Meanwhile, a clip showed Georgia dancing very close with her friend Abir Ahmed at a local bar. In her caption, Georgia expressed her enchantment with the holiday hotspot, stating, 'Puerto Plata has absolutely stolen my heart.' Georgia's stunning holiday follows reports she has been leaning on her nearest and dearest for support, following her recent split from her husband Lee Elliott. On Sunday, the 35-year-old revealed she has even replaced a photo of herself and Lee in her home with a picture of her male best friend. The Bachelorette star took to her Instagram to reveal her new home setup, which included a photo with her friend Abir Ahmed. The image showed the pair warmly embracing and smiling for the camera at her real-life bachelorette party in 2021. It comes after Georgia's ex Lee sparked rumours he has been enjoying a romance with Carrie Bickmore. According to Woman's Day, the radio host and the former Bachelorette star have been spending a lot of time together at Carrie's home in recent weeks. The publication claims the pair were introduced by mutual friends and the relationship is 'heating up quickly'. 'They've been trying hard to keep things under wraps. But there's definitely something romantic going on. They're a beautiful couple!' a source told the magazine. 'After nine wonderful years together, including four as husband and wife, [we] have made the incredibly difficult decision to lovingly part ways,' they wrote. 'Our relationship has been so special and we will always cherish the memories, love, and laughter we've shared. 'There is no drama, no bad blood. Just two people who have grown in different directions while still holding deep respect and care for each other. 'We remain friends and we'd really appreciate our privacy as we navigate this next stage. Thank you.' Georgia and Lee had fuelled split rumours for some time, having not been seen together for four months and no longer wearing their wedding rings. Carrie, meanwhile, has long been linked to her Carrie & Tommy radio show co-star, Tommy Little. While they have never confirmed that they are a couple, fans continue to speculate about the true nature of their relationship.

Would YOU wear this to the beach? Bachelor star shocks as she slips into VERY skimpy swimwear: 'Not exactly practical'

A reality TV star stunned her followers on Tuesday when she stripped down to some of the tiniest bikinis she has ever modelled. Australian personality Kiki Morris, who got her start on The Bachelor in 2016 and now lives in Bali, strutted her stuff in a racy video she shared to Instagram. The blonde beauty, 37, posted a bikini haul after she was gifted several items by a swimwear company, but some pieces were just too skimpy to be 'practical'. Kiki began her haul with some more modest pieces for the beach, including a brown, cowboy inspired sports bra and bike shorts. But the former reality star quickly moved onto the very tiny bathers she was sent by the company Andi Bagus. 'Look at this beautiful tie-die, sunset vibe,' she said as she flaunted her figure in a pastel string bikini. Her 'favourite' frock was a crochet set covered in 'little evil eyes', which is an image superstitiously believed to ward off negative energy. But the pièce de résistance of Kiki's haul came in a barely-there ice-cream bikini. It featured naught but string and three scraps of material shaped into ice-cream cones to protect her modesty. 'This is not exactly practical for swimming, but my gosh, it is so cute,' she said as she modelled the set in her bedroom. 'It's very innocent and cute and sexy.' In August last year, Kiki relocated from Australia to sunny Ibiza, Spain, to live with her rumoured fiancée Jorge. She has since been spotted wearing what appears to be a glitzy engagement ring, but has never commented on rumours they are set to tie the knot. Bidding farewell to Australia at the time, she wrote on Instagram: 'It's not goodbye, it's see ya later. Last weekend in Sydney with my beautiful girls! Tomorrow is the day.' 'Look at this beautiful tie-die, sunset vibe,' she said as she flaunted her figure in one pastel string bikini Kiki is now based in Bali, where she takes part in charity efforts to save stray cats and dogs in the area. The Bachelor fans will remember Morris from Richie Strahan's season in 2016. After being dumped on the show, she later returned to screens in spin-off series Bachelor In Paradise—but failed to find love there. In 2023, she won a decent pay cheque of $100,000 when she took out the crown on The Challenge. Just weeks after the finale aired, she became the latest in a long line of reality stars who signed up to the X-rated site OnlyFans for a quick payday. The star invited her followers to subscribe to her page for free and hoped to secure a sale once on board. 'Hi guys, I am so excited to finally join you all here,' she wrote in her initial post. 'I will be sharing with you what you want to see feature on my page so let me know what you want to see of me, or just stop and say hi.'

Travel expert shares sneaky hack to avoid expensive mini bar costs - but asks not to be judged

A travel expert has shared her sneaky hack to help others avoid expensive mini bar costs. Carmen Roberts, a TV host and travel business owner, posted the trick on her Instagram account, @carmenroberts_travels. Many tourists reach for a refreshing drink from the hotel room mini fridge – some without realising it may come with a high price tag. Most people will pay the bill at the end of their stay, but Carmen has revealed a way to avoid being hit with inflated pricing. She penned: 'Confession: I drank the $12 mini bar soft drink and replaced it before checkout. Don't judge.' The travel expert simply heads to a local shop and buys the same drink, but at a fraction of the cost. 'Mini Bar Madness - $12 for a soft drink? No thanks,' Carmen added. 'I'll grab the same one at a local supermarket for $1.' She shared other tricks for saving money while away on holiday, including bringing a refillable bottle to avoid paying top prices when out and about. 'Bottled Water at Tourist Attractions - Always bring a refillable bottle,' Carmen wrote. 'Many airports, stations, and cities have free filtered water. Those €4 impulse bottles add up fast.' In response to the minibar hack, one baffled Instagram user gushed, 'This is so clever!' Carmen responded and admitted that she has had issues in the past when she couldn't find the same drink or snack. She said: 'I should say this has backfired in the past when I couldn't find the exact same bag of nuts or soda etc to replace!!' It comes as another travel expert, Dimple Chudasama-Adams, revealed a checklist of essential tasks every holidaymaker must do before settling into their hotel room. The seasoned traveller, from Birmingham, UK, regularly shares 'secret' tips and travel advice with her 5,400 following on Instagram. In a recent video, posted to her account @escape_the_ordinary_by_dimple, Dimple unveiled her 'travel pro checklist' of five crucial jobs to do in hotel rooms or rented accommodation to ensure safety, comfort and and optimum hygiene. The first is checking for bed bugs, which is crucial on arrival as it can help prevent an infestation in your own home once your trip has come to an end. Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers and can easily attach themselves to luggage, clothing, and other items, so thoroughly inspecting the room before unpacking can help prevent their spread. Dimple advises holidaymakers to 'pull back sheets and inspect mattress corners' for dark spots that could indicate the presence of bed bugs.
