North Dakota's historic sites will finally have toilets that flush

Independent03-06-2025
Lawrence Welk didn't have a flush toilet where he grew up, but visitors to his childhood home in rural North Dakota now do.
The bandleader's childhood family home marks the latest step in the State Historical Society of North Dakota's nearly completed goal of installing flush toilets at its dozen most popular, staffed sites. The most recent success, with the final three planned to be completed soon, came before the unveiling of a statue of Welk at a site that draws fans who recall 'The Lawrence Welk Show,' which ran on TV for decades starting in the 1950s.
The North Dakota group's goal of replacing pit toilets with flush units may seem like a humble aspiration to some, but it's an important milestone, said Chris Dorfschmidt, a historic sites manager.
'A lot of our sites are kind of in the middle of nowhere. As I like to put it, history didn't happen where it's convenient,' he said. 'Because of that, if you've driven all the way out there, and that's the best we can do to kind of accommodate you, it's not the most pleasant experience.'
North Dakota has 60 state historic sites — everything from museums and an underground nuclear launch facility to plaques mounted on boulders in fields.
'All of our sites, they really do help share a story of us as a state,' Dorfschmidt said.
Two other facilities are slated to be finished by June 30: at Whitestone Hill, the site of a deadly 1863 attack by U.S. troops against Native Americans; and Fort Buford, a military fort near the Missouri-Yellowstone river confluence.
The Historical Society also is eyeing the Chateau de Mores for flush toilets. The wealthy Marquis de Mores built the 26-room home in 1883 near Medora, a present-day tourist town in the state's scenic Badlands where a young President Theodore Roosevelt once roamed.
Less-visited sites that aren't staffed likely won't receive a restroom upgrade, which costs about $150,000 each.
At the Welk Homestead, about 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) southeast of Bismarck, workers matched the color scheme of the restroom to the house and farm buildings, including interior colors.
'We made it to fit into the site and harmonize with the site and just be a pleasant part of the experience,' Historic Sites Manager Rob Hanna said.

‘Vacuum mulching' can keep your lawn green and healthy in Fall despite the falling leaves – any mower can be transformed

A LAWN care expert gave his best advice on how to take care of your lawn during the fall season. Chris Lazo, who goes by @bermudadad on TikTok, shared his hack for protecting your lawn as the season begins to change. 1 Lazo warns that leaves falling from trees during the seasonal change can block the nutrients the lawn gets from the sun. In the video, Lazo shows leaves covering his whole front lawn. 'There are two great options for handling this, and I'll be testing out Greenworks tools for both of them,' he said. One of the unique methods Lazo used to prep his lawn was lawn mulching. 'Mulching can put the nutrients right back into your grass by chopping leaf materials into particles that are small enough to break down easily and go back into your soil,' Lazo said. He then showed how he turned his Greenworks 60V 21-inch self-propelled lawn mower into a mulcher. 'First thing I'm going to do is block off the chute in the back of the mower with a mulch plug and then remove the side discharge,' Lazo demonstrated. 'This allows the vacuum that the blade creates to keep the grass swirling inside the deck for longer, so that the blade gets multiple passes at the clippings before dropping them back onto the ground,' he continued. Lazo warned that you'll need shorter clippings to have a successful mulch job, which means you'll need to mow more often. Lawn mulching can contribute up to one pound of a lawn's annual nitrogen requirements, according to the home care website The Spruce. Watch the moment home owner walks over their new-build's lawn and shows how landscaping turned it into a water bed A lawn typically requires about four pounds of nitrogen, so reusing the clippings on the grass offers significant benefits. Practicing lawn mulching can also save lawn caretakers a significant amount of time and energy compared to using a lawn mower. 'This is what I do to keep my lawn beautiful, clean, and healthy throughout the fall.' However, if you choose not to lawn mulch, you can always purchase a blower. 'A blower beats a rake any day because it can remove leaves quickly and easily,' he said. Lazo went on to explain that those with larger lawns should look for a blower with a decent amount of power to it and some flexibility. The lawn care expert used Greenworks' 60-volt leaf blower. The leaf blower can produce up to 200 miles per hour winds and has a 60-minute battery life. The leaf blower weighs ten pounds and is powered at 780 cubic feet per meter. Lazo said the blower is great for him because he wants the power without the weight.

New hammer blow for ailing Las Vegas as airport warns visitor numbers have slumped by 100k a DAY

The number of airline passengers arriving into ailing Las Vegas ' main airport will continue to plummet by almost 100,000 day, a new report warns. Capacity rates at Sin City's Harry Reid International Airport are forecast to drop dramatically in the second half of 2025, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. The grim outlook is due to a decline in visitors from Canada, along with maintenance issues with the airport's second largest airline, experts said. They warned the number of inbound passengers will plunge by around 95,000 seats per day for the rest of the year. The worrying prediction represents a 2.3 percent fall from 2024 numbers, according to the report by Ailevon Pacific Aviation Consulting, which commissioned by the city's tourism board. The decline is largely being fueled by a sharp 18.5 percent drop-off in traffic from Canada which typically comprises the largest share of international visitors to the Nevada city, per the Las Vegas Review Journal. The number of Canadian passengers flying to Las Vegas fell by an average of 2,412 per day this year, according to the report. The loss of Canadian tourists has cancelled out gains from other continents, including a 31.7 percent increase in airline capacity from Asia and a 21.6 percent increase jump from Europe excluding the United Kingdom. The shock report cemented a steep decline in tourism to Las Vegas, with previous statistics from April showing it was losing upwards of 300,000 visitors per month since the start of 2025. The loss in tourism was blamed by some on the election of Donald Trump to the presidency in January and his subsequent jibes at Canada. Trump quickly launched a hostile attack on the country and threatened to make it America's '51st state' if it did not submit to his tariff demands. With Canadians making up a large part of all tourism to Sin City, Trump's antagonism of its residents may have played a role. As the downward trend was beginning to snowball in February, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority President and CEO Steve Hill told the Journal that he was hearing from many angry Canadians about the president. 'There's an awful lot of the anecdotal conversation around Canadians being angry and upset about tariffs and talk around annexing the country,' he said. 'We've seen consumer confidence numbers drop pretty significantly over the past couple of months.' Las Vegas has seen a staggering decline in tourism this year, and a new report found that capacity at its major airport is expected to fall by around 95,000 plane seats a day in the second half of 2025 In May, the World Travel & Tourism Council also reported that in its forecasts for 2025, the US was set to lose $12.5 billion in international visitor spending. 'While other nations are rolling out the welcome mat, the U.S. government is putting up the 'closed' sign,' Julia Simpson, the council's president and CEO, said in a news release at the time. Another reason for the recent drop in Las Vegas is due to a maintenance issue with Spirit Airlines, the second busiest carrier at Reid International Airport. The maintenance issues have grounded 50 planes in Spirit's fleet, which has significantly reduced its capacity, according to Ailevon Pacific Aviation Consulting senior director Joel Van Over. 'They have an issue with their (jet) engines,' Van Over said. 'They have to pull that engine off the plane, fix the cracks, put it back on the plane, and that whole process takes about 300 days. 'So obviously they can't just do a plane a year because it would take them 100 years to get that done.'
