Driver arrested in 120 mph chase after running Border Patrol checkpoint in far West Texas

Yahooa day ago
A Louisiana man is accused in a 120 mph vehicle chase that ended in a crash after speeding away from the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Sierra Blanca, Texas, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas said.
Benjamin Thomas Mackey, of New Orleans, was allegedly transporting 10 pounds of marijuana that he had purchased in a plan to make money to invest it in a business, according to a criminal complaint filed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
Mackey faces a federal charge of high-speed flight from an immigration checkpoint and is being held without bond at the El Paso County Jail in Downtown El Paso, according to a jail log. If convicted, he could face up to five years in federal prison.
The incident occurred about 8 p.m. on July 3 at the Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 10 east of El Paso near the town of Sierra Blanca in Hudspeth County, the complaint stated.
A silver Mercedes-Benz C 300 driven by Mackey pulled into the checkpoint when a Border Patrol drug-sniffing dog alerted agents to the car, the complaint stated.
Mackey told an agent that he is a U.S. citizen, provided a Louisiana driver's license and was referred to a secondary inspection, the complaint stated. Mackey turned off the car when told by agents but appeared to get nervous, quickly restarted the car and sped off.

One agent "had to move out of the way as he almost got ran over" by Mackey, the complaint stated.
The Border Patrol agents chased after the car on I-10 reaching 120 mph but agents were unable to catch up to the sedan and lost sight of it, the complaint stated.
About 8:10 p.m., the car was spotted in the town of Sierra Blanca near the Border Patrol station, the complaint stated. When agents attempted to pull over the vehicle, the driver accelerated and "drove in an erratic/dangerous matter" before crashing into metal barriers near a gas station. Mackey ran from the crash before he was arrested by agents.
A Border Patrol agent received unspecified injuries to his legs during the chase and was taken to a hospital, the complaint added.

Agents found 10 pounds of marijuana in a search of the car. When questioned later by a Border Patrol agent, Mackey allegedly admitted to speeding away from the checkpoint because he had the marijuana in the car and was on parole in Louisiana.
He allegedly told the agent that he didn't know how fast he was going but that he "floored it" and that's why he lost control of the car and crashed, the complaint stated. The complaint mentioned that Mackey has a criminal history from Louisiana on charges of distribution/possession of marijuana and illegal carrying of a weapon from 2021.

Retired Army officer pleads guilty to sharing classified info on Russia-Ukraine war on dating site

A retired Army officer who worked as a civilian for the Air Force has pleaded guilty to conspiring to transmit classified information about Russia's war with Ukraine on a foreign online dating platform. David Slater, 64, who had top secret clearance at his job at the U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, pleaded guilty to a single count before a federal magistrate judge in Omaha on Thursday. In exchange for his guilty plea, two other counts were dropped. Slater remains free pending his sentencing, which is scheduled for Oct. 8. Prosecutors and his lawyers agreed that he should serve between five years and 10 months and seven years and three months in prison, and the government will recommend a term at the low end of that range. The charge carries a statutory maximum of 10 years behind bars. U.S. District Judge Brian Buescher will ultimately decide whether to accept the plea agreement and will determine Slater's sentence. 'I conspired to willfully communicate national defense information to an unauthorized person,' Slater said in a handwritten note on his petition to change his plea. Slater had access to some of the country's most closely held secrets, John Eisenberg, assistant attorney general for national security, said in a statement. 'Access to classified information comes with great responsibility," said Lesley Woods, the U.S. attorney for Nebraska, said in the same statement. "David Slater failed in his duty to protect this information by willingly sharing National Defense Information with an unknown online personality despite having years of military experience that should have caused him to be suspicious of that person's motives.' Slater retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel in 2020 and worked in a classified space at the base from around August 2021 until around April 2022. He attended briefings about the Russia-Ukraine war that were classified up to top secret, court documents say. He was arrested in March of 2024. In his plea agreement, he acknowledged that he conspired to transmit classified information that he learned from those briefings via the foreign dating website's messaging platform to an unnamed coconspirator, who claimed to be a woman living in Ukraine. The information, classified as secret, pertained to military targets and Russian military capabilities, according to the plea agreement. 'Defendant knew and had reason to believe that such information could be used to the injury of the United States or the advantage of a foreign nation,' the agreement states. According to the original indictment, the coconspirator regularly asked Slater for classified information. She called him, 'my secret informant love!' in one message. She closed another by saying, 'You are my secret agent. With love.' In another, she wrote, 'Dave, I hope tomorrow NATO will prepare a very pleasant 'surprise' for (Russian President Vladimir) Putin! Will you tell me?" Court documents don't identify the coconspirator, or say whether she was working for Ukraine or Russia. They also don't identify the dating platform. Amy Donato, a spokesperson for the U.S. attorney's office in Omaha, said Monday that she couldn't provide that information. Slater's attorney, Stuart Dornan, didn't immediately return a call seeking further details.

Shooting at Kentucky church after traffic stop leaves 3 dead, more injured. Police ID suspect

(This story has been updated with new information.) Three people are dead, including one suspect, and a Kentucky State Police officer and two men are injured after a series of shootings on July 13 near an airport and at a church in Lexington, officials said. A man suspected of shooting a state trooper on Terminal Drive just after 11:30 a.m. was located by law enforcement officers at Richmond Road Baptist Church, Lexington officials said. Lexington police shot and killed the suspect, Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said during a press conference. Three officers fired their weapons at the suspect. The suspect has been identified as Guy House, 47. The trooper is also receiving treatment for their injuries, but is believed to be in stable condition, Weathers said. The shooting on Terminal Drive occurred after a state trooper stopped a vehicle in connection to a license plate reader alert in the area of Versailles Road, Weathers said. The suspect left the scene after the trooper was shot. A short time later, the suspect carjacked a vehicle, which officers were able to track to the 5800 block of Old Richmond Road, Weathers said. The suspect "fired his weapon at individuals on church property." Two women were pronounced dead at the scene, while two men are hospitalized, Weathers said. One man is critical condition, while the other is in stable condition. "Preliminary information indicates the suspect may have had a connection to the individuals at the church," Weathers said. The Fayette County County Coroner's Office identified the deceased women as Beverly Gumm, 72, and Christina Combs, 34. "This church was a small church and the majority of the individuals there are biologically related in some way or another. If not, they've been friends for many, many years," Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn said during the press conference. "They're a very tight-knit group of people." Kentucky State Police and Lexington Police officials are investigating the shootings, Weathers said. The Lexington Police officers involved will be placed on administrative assignment, pending the outcome of the investigation. In a social media post, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear asked residents to "pray for the families of those lost, each one a child of God gone too soon." "Thank you to the Lexington Police Department and the Kentucky State Police for their brave efforts today," Beshear said. "Kentucky, let's stand strong together and support our Lexington neighbors during this difficult time." In a statement, Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman said the Department of Criminal Investigations would "stand ready to support (KSP and the Lexington Police Department) with whatever they need in the days ahead." "We are grateful to the Kentucky State Police and Lexington Police Department, who courageously ran toward danger to protect this community," Coleman said. "This is another reminder of the grave danger we ask law enforcement to face every single day. We go to houses of worship to gather in fellowship, unite in faith, and reach toward our Creator. In light of this tragedy, we turn to God with our prayers for the injured Trooper and the victims' families." This story may be updated.
