'Dinosaur football' or 'professional performance'?

We asked for your views on Hearts' 2-0 win against Aberdeen. Here's what some of you said: Keith: Thoroughly professional performance, looked strong in every department and have a physicality to dig in when required, Derek McInnes has been flawless since his arrival. SJ: Couldn't believe the team selection. Three at the back, two full-backs and no wingers when we're at home? Aimless 40-yard cross-field passes! If their striker hadn't missed that sitter, we'd have been embarrassed. When we changed shape on 75 minutes we looked far better. Harry Milne, Finlay Pollock, Craig Halkett and Oisin McEntee were excellent but Christian Borchgrevink and Blair Spittal are not the answer. Grateful for the three points but I don't think we scared any of the other teams. Jim: Good start in the first half, really good second half. Aberdeen had a good couple of chances from cross balls which was quite alarming considering the height we had at the back but over the piece it was good to see a bit of fight for the second ball. The new signings look good too. Richard: A hard-fought three points and not really until the second went in did we manage the game. Aberdeen huffed and puffed but were really poor in front of goal. Cameron Devlin and McEntee maintained real composure and tenacity in the last 15 to get us over the line comfortably. Every player is coming onto the pitch with drive and ambition to do well. Great first match under the lights. Ray: Good result and new signings look lively and better than what we have. However with the aimless long balls up the park we looked like Scotland at the Euros by passing over the midfield. Likely to be third or fourth, but this dinosaur football is not a good watch, we need a progressive manager. Peter: A very different feeling to this team, dealt well with all they have faced so far. They have a growing confidence, and increasing knowledge of what their teammates are capable of. Goals are coming from many sources and that is very encouraging, especially with Lawrence Shankland in amongst them.

'Real quality' - coach hails Embleton's pre-season efforts for Blues

Elliot Embleton is showing plenty of his quality as he aims to make a positive fresh start for Carlisle United in 2025/26. That is the view of coach Gavin Skelton, who says the former Sunderland and Blackpool man's attributes have been clear this summer. Embleton, 26, has put himself firmly in the frame for a starting role in the Blues' opening game of the National League season at Woking on Saturday. The January signing scored his first goal for the club, from the penalty spot in the 2-0 win at Chester. That came at the end of a pre-season where Embleton has featured regularly for Mark Hughes' side in an attacking midfield role. First-team coach Skelton agreed that Embleton's ability was clear. 'Amongst a number, he's shown real quality,' said Skelton. Embleton converted a penalty in United's 2-0 win at Chester on Saturday (Image: Richard Parkes) 'He's shown that not just in his passing, it's his movement and understanding of the game as well. 'Top players have that. It's not just on the ball, it's their understanding of the game.' Carlisle United announce sell-out for National League opener at Woking Signs of Embleton's prominence in pre-season are clear with the midfielder having played the fourth most minutes in United's friendlies in the full squad. Carlisle hope he can play an influential role in their bid to make a positive start to the new fifth-tier season. Embleton endured a difficult start to his Carlisle career after joining in Blackpool in last winter's transfer window, with the player coming in for stick from some fans as United crashed to relegation. Yet now he appears a strong contender to be in Hughes' opening-day XI at the Kingfield Stadium, in the number ten position behind an attack that looks set to include impressive summer signing Regan Linney. Florian Wirtz says pressure of Liverpool price tag ‘doesn't matter': ‘I just want to play football'

Florian Wirtz insists his price tag will not weigh him down at Liverpool as he prepares for a season of scrutiny. The 22-year-old attacker will become the most expensive player in the history of British football if the add-ons in his £116million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen are triggered. Wirtz knows the rest of the Premier League will be watching closely as expectations rise, but insists he's ready for the challenge. Advertisement 'I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter,' the German said to reporters in the mixed zone after the pre-season friendly with Athletic Club. 'I came because I thought I could fit in this team and I am enjoying to stay with these players. I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me. 'I will try to find the right places to be and the right spaces to get on the ball and to be dangerous and create chances.' Wirtz says he has settled in well and is enjoying the new environment after leaving Germany for the first time in his short career. His experienced team-mates have already warned him what to expect when the Premier League starts but he says that doesn't faze him. 'They tell me it's more intense and more physical and that every player is really strong, really fast,' he adds. 'I am really looking forward to play there and experience some differences to Germany but I think there is also something I can learn and make me better. 'It is good that we have a few players that arrive at the same time so we can connect and talk to each other about how we deal with things That helps when you come to a new team. 'The big challenge is to win the title again and it is the most difficult thing to do. 'I will just try to create chances and work hard off the ball and run a lot to help make the team better.' It's early days for the record signing but already he's beginning to show the impact he can have. Arne Slot has worked closely with him in training to show exactly where he wants him to fit in. For a player so gifted on the ball, it's striking how much effort he puts in off it. In Liverpool's win over Athletic Club in the final pre-season outing of the summer, Wirtz was both industrious and creative. What stood out most was his movement off the ball. He consistently found space in between the lines, allowing team-mates Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai the freedom to flourish close by. Advertisement As Wirtz told reporters ahead of the new season, he's committed to putting in the hard yards for the team and that will only strengthen the Premier League champions. His ball-carrying ability and talent in leading counter-attacks are well known, but it's the all-round nature of his game that makes him such and exciting prospect.
