70% chance of favorable weather for this evening's ULA launch from Florida

Yahoo28-04-2025
April 28 (UPI) -- United Launch Alliance on Monday plans to launch Amazon's first 27 satellites after earlier launch plans were scrubbed nearly three weeks ago because of inclement weather in Florida.
Liftoff for Kuiper-1 is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT from pad 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. There is a two-hour launch window, and it can be pushed back to Tuesday in case of bad weather again or technical problems.
There is a 10-mile ring around the launch site for weather considerations.
On Monday, weather conditions were listed as 70% favorable, according to ULA.
The 106.5-foot Atlas 551 booster will put 27 Kuiper satellites into orbit at an altitude of 280 miles for high-speed Internet access to millions of people around the world.
The Atlas V 551 rocket is configured with five side-mounted solid rocket boosters and a medium-length payload fairing, according to ULA. The rocket elements were assembled inside the Vertical Integration Facility adjacent to the launch pad.
Amazon plans to launch 3,232 Kuiper satellites by 2029, including half by mid-2026.
The Federal Communications Commission in February 2023 approved the entire Project Kuiper after ULA dealt with the risks of orbital debris.
Last week, ULA President and CEO Tony Bruno said the company is targeting late spring or early summer for its next Kuiper Atlas launch. The company also is planning its first national security mission via a Vulcan rocket.
In October 2023, ULA launched two prototype Kuiper satellites into orbit for testing.
Amazon is building the satellites in Kirkland, Wash.
"We've designed some of the most advanced communications satellites ever built, and every launch is an opportunity to add more capacity and coverage to our network," Rajeev Badyal, vice president of Project Kuiper, said in a pre-launch blog posting. "We've done extensive testing on the ground to prepare for this first mission, but there are some things you can only learn in flight, and this will be the first time we've flown our final satellite design and the first time we've deployed so many satellites at once."
Rival SpaceX has launched 7,000 Starlink satellites for more than 5 million subscribers. Also, Eutelsat OneWeb also is entering the market for low Earth orbit satellites for internet usage.
United Launch Alliance LLC was formed in December 2006 as a joint venture between Lockheed Martin Space and Boeing Defense, Space & Security.

Will Chiplets Give Rigetti the Edge in the Race to Quantum Scale?

Rigetti Computing RGTI is leaning heavily on chiplets as the way to make quantum computers truly scalable. In the second quarter, the company unveiled Cepheus-1-36Q, a four-chiplet system that is now available on Rigetti's Quantum Cloud Services and will soon be offered on Microsoft Azure. What matters for investors is that this system cut error rates in half compared to Rigetti's previous design and reached 99.5% two-qubit gate fidelity. Management also guided that a 100-plus qubit system with similar fidelity should be ready by year-end 2025. Progress is also coming on gate speeds, moving from about 70 nanoseconds down to the 50-60 nanosecond range, with a clear goal of going below 50 nanoseconds. Rigetti argues that chiplets improve performance, simplify manufacturing, and help yields, all of which are critical for scaling up. The real test will be how this approach performs as the company moves toward the industry benchmark of around 1,000 qubits with 99.9% fidelity and error correction. Management believes that point, which they call quantum advantage, is still about three to four years away. Importantly, Rigetti has the financial cushion to fund this roadmap. In the second quarter, it raised $350 million through an equity offering, ending the quarter with $571.6 million in cash and no debt. Revenue was weak at $1.8 million, down from $3.1 million last year, mainly because of delays in U.S. government funding programs. But the company stresses that at this stage, technology milestones are far more important than near-term sales. Peers Updates D-Wave Quantum QBTS continues to advance its annealing-based systems, recently focusing on hybrid solvers and demonstrating practical use cases in optimization problems. While its approach differs from Rigetti's gate-based model, the company is working on expanding customer adoption through cloud services and enterprise partnerships. Investors should watch whether D-Wave can keep scaling annealing systems while also making progress on its longer-term gate-model program. Quantum Computing Inc. QUBT has been highlighting its progress on software tools and middleware that can run across different quantum hardware platforms. The company has also been investing in its photonic-based quantum initiatives, with an eye on creating systems that are more stable and easier to scale. The focus remains on proving that these efforts can translate into consistent performance gains, supported by real demonstrations rather than just roadmap announcements. Rigetti's Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates Shares of RGTI have lost 0.7% in the year-to-date period against the industry's growth of 21.4%. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research From a valuation standpoint, Rigetti trades at a price-to-book ratio of 7.96, above the industry average. RGTI carries a Value Score of F. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Rigetti's 2025 earnings implies a significant 86.1% rise from the year-ago period. Musk's Starlink Courts Luxury Airlines to Grow In-Flight Wi-Fi Business

Save For the past three years, Elon Musk has steadily elbowed his way into the booming market for in-flight Wi-Fi, with his Starlink service signing up blue-chip carriers from Air France to Qatar Airways to United Airlines. Alaska Air Group Inc. said on Wednesday it will install Starlink starting next year and Virgin Atlantic in early July reached a deal to use the SpaceX-owned satellite network. Arch-rival British Airways might be not far behind, according to people familiar with the matter, in a deal that would let Musk lock up another flagship airline on the lucrative trans-Atlantic route.

Toshiba Releases Automotive Photorelay in a Small Package that Achieves Output Withstand Voltage of 1500V for Automotive Battery Systems

KAWASAKI, Japan--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") has launched an automotive photorelay [1], " TLX9161T," in a small SO12L-T package, that achieves an output withstand voltage of 1500V (min), the level required to support high voltage automotive batteries. Volume shipments start today. Key challenges in popularizing electric vehicles include reducing charging times and improving cruising range. Addressing these requires efficient operation of the battery system. This is done by the battery management system (BMS), which monitors the battery's charge status to enable high-efficiency system operation, and also monitors isolation between the battery and the vehicle body to ensure the safe use of high-voltage batteries. Electrically isolated photorelays are used in BMS that handle high voltages. Toshiba's new product, a high-voltage photorelay with an output withstand voltage of 1500V (min), is a miniaturized version of Toshiba's TLX9160T photorelay. Miniaturizing the TLX9160T's built-in MOSFET chip has achieved integration into the SO12L-T package, which has a mounting area approximately 25% [2] smaller than the TLX9160T's SO16L-T package. This size reduction also contributes to miniaturization and cost reduction of the BMS. The pin pitch and pin layout are the same as those of the SO16L-T, enabling use of the same circuit board pattern design. The new photorelay uses a resin with a Comparative Tracking Index (CTI [3]) exceeding 600, which is classified under Material Group I [4] of the IEC 60664-1 [5] international standard. The pin configuration ensures a creepage distance of more than 5mm [6] on the detector side. This realizes compliance with IEC 60664-1, supporting an operating voltage of 1000V. Toshiba will continue to expand its lineup of automotive photorelay products and provide solutions that address the challenges in popularizing electric vehicles, aiming to contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society. Notes: [1] Photorelay: The primary (control) and the secondary (switch) sides are electrically isolated. Switches connected directly to the AC line, and switches between equipment that differ in ground potential, can be controlled through insulating barriers.
