Commercial vehicle experts convene at Automechanika Dubai Network event ahead of Automechanika Dubai 2025
The commercial vehicle sector in the GCC is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.6% until 2028
Electrification, green mobility and digitalisation are key topics on the agenda as the sector prepares for its next phase of growth
Dubai, UAE: Messe Frankfurt Middle East, the organiser of Automechanika Dubai, has officially launched the first Automechanika Dubai Network event for 2025. This bi-annual focused industry forum is designed to promote insight, collaboration, and transformation within the region's automotive aftermarket.
The first edition for 2025, powered by Bridgestone, took place at the Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights, with the theme ' Commercial Vehicles—Trends & Transformation".
Automechanika Dubai, the largest international automotive aftermarket trade show in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, continues to develop as a year-round platform focused on fostering strategic discussions within the sector. The annual Automechanika Dubai Network event gathered thought leaders and industry stakeholders to explore the latest innovations in fleet management, sustainability, and vehicle electrification.
Sunny Manjani, Principal Consultant for Growth Advisory at Frost & Sullivan, was the first speaker to address the audience. He presented a market outlook for commercial vehicles, highlighting opportunities in emerging markets such as India, ASEAN, and Latin America. Additionally, he discussed regional trends in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), including the effects of declining oil prices, innovative strategies implemented by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), and tourism growth in Saudi Arabia.
'According to Frost & Sullivan's Top 5 Predictions for 2025, counter tariffs from various countries have made global trade and logistics unpredictable, impacting freight movement and vehicle demand. Meanwhile, growth in commercial vehicles is expected in India, ASEAN, and Latin America, while EV targets face setbacks in North America and Europe. Under current conditions, internal combustion engines are evolving into cleaner, fuel-agnostic solutions, and OEMs are exploring M&A opportunities to integrate advanced software and AI," Manjani said.
In a keynote on smart trucking, Wahaj Malik, Vehicle Sales Director, UD Trucks Middle East, discussed how digitalisation and telematics are revolutionising fleet operations. He highlighted the importance of data-driven decision-making, real-time vehicle monitoring, and predictive maintenance strategies that improve operational efficiency and reduce downtime.
'Logistics is the lifeblood of society. We believe that people depend on logistics, and logistics depend on people,' Malik said. 'The inefficiency is the biggest challenge of our sector — the safety aspect for road users, the public, congestion, and the environmental issues it brings. However, it is moving towards digitalisation and becoming smarter.'
Hans Wising, Sales Director at Scania Middle East, addressed the topic of green mobility, sharing insights on the decarbonisation of transport. Additionally, Berk Berksoy, Fleet Solutions, OE & Retread Manager at Bridgestone Middle East Africa, presented the company's Fleet Care programme. This programme offers customised solutions to reduce operational costs, enhance safety, and optimise performance.
The event concluded with a panel discussion titled 'Driving the Future: End-User Perspectives on Fleet Electrification and Sustainable Mobility." This discussion focused on the practical aspects of transforming fleets from the ground up, highlighting insights from various sectors, including logistics, public transport, and last-mile service providers.
Panellists included Dr. Raj Kishore Kamalanathsharma, Advisory Consultant; Zain Peracha, Head of New Ventures at Emirates Transport; Dr. Raman Kumar, Managing Director at Al-Futtaim Logistics; Vishal Pandey, Director at Glasgow Research & Consulting; and Bassem Hassan, General Manager at Orient Motors Group.
The iteration of Automechanika Dubai Network serves as a precursor to further discussions scheduled for Automechanika Dubai 2025, which will take place from 9 – 11 December at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Tommy Le, Show Manager of Automechanika Dubai at Messe Frankfurt Middle East, said: "Automechanika Dubai Network provides a platform for meaningful and focused dialogue. Commercial vehicles are a crucial segment facing significant technological changes, and this event gave the industry a chance to align on opportunities and pain points ahead of the December show. We take pride in supporting the automotive aftermarket sector through ongoing year-round engagement."
The 22nd edition of Automechanika Dubai will again highlight Innovation4Mobility, which serves as the central hub for innovative technologies, futuristic concepts, and visionary ideas in mobility. Also returning is the Automechanika Academy, a premier knowledge-sharing platform providing strategic insights into emerging trends, technologies, and service models transforming the automotive aftermarket.
Further key features include the Lubricants & Base Oils Conference, Modern Workshop, Future Fleets: Telematics & Automotive Logistics Conference AfriConnections, the interactive PitStop Challenge, and the prestigious Automechanika Dubai Awards recognising excellence across the industry.
In 2025, the exhibition will introduce "Region Focus: Made in GCC," a dedicated showcase highlighting the growing presence of automotive manufacturing and industrial innovation in the region. The new Commercial Vehicles feature will highlight the specific needs of the mining, construction, and agriculture sectors. Additionally, there will be a special Road Safety Day to emphasise essential safety initiatives.

Sharjah expands power grid, replaces overhead electric cables in some rural areas
Sharjah's power grid has undergone a major expansion across the central region — energising more than 15 key locations in a move aimed at boosting reliability and meeting the growing electricity needs of emerging residential and economic zones. The project by Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) saw the installation of over 81.7km of high- and low-voltage cables, covering areas such as Al Dhaid, Madam, Maliha, and Al Bataeh. It forms part of SEWA's plan to modernise infrastructure in non-coastal areas and improve efficiency by reducing power loss across the network. The works are part of a larger shift to provide more dependable and high-capacity electricity services outside city centres. 'We are witnessing steady development in the central region, and our role is to ensure the power network grows with it. This isn't a temporary fix. It's a long-term investment to serve the community and support future expansion,' Eng. Khalifa Mohammed Al Tunaiji, Director of SEWA's Central Region, told Khaleej Times. SEWA also connected more than 45 residential, agricultural, industrial, and government projects to the upgraded grid. Among the major developments that received power are Sharjah Safari, the Wheat Farm, Al Dhaid University, Al Jubail Market, the Wildlife Museum, and several schools and mosques. Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. As part of the upgrade, SEWA began replacing overhead lines with underground cable systems — a step typically limited to urban infrastructure. Al Tunaiji said the underground shift will enhance safety, improve network stability, and help protect the grid during adverse weather conditions. 'This is about providing equal service to all areas of Sharjah — urban or rural,' he added. The central region, once considered peripheral, has seen a steady rise in development with new housing projects, agricultural ventures, and public facilities. SEWA's infrastructure expansion is aligned with Sharjah's broader vision for sustainable and inclusive growth across the emirate. Looking ahead, SEWA plans to install more distribution substations and complete the removal of all remaining overhead lines in the central region by 2026, Al Tunaiji confirmed. 'We're committed to building a grid that's ready for the future — reliable, efficient, and accessible to everyone,' he said. SEWA's latest rollout reflects a growing national focus on infrastructure equity and energy security as the UAE continues to expand services into emerging regions and satellite towns.

Meet Dubai student who launched AI website to help unprivileged with college applications
A Year 13 student from a Dubai school has created an AI-powered platform designed to support underprivileged students through the complex and often daunting college application process. This new student-led innovation is aiming to bridge educational inequality using cutting-edge technology. Garv Lamba, who was recently accepted into the University of California, San Diego to study artificial intelligence, came up with the idea after his own challenges during the university application process. Although he had access to school counsellors and professional consultants, Garv realised that many students worldwide lack this support. Reflecting on his own experience, Garv shared, 'I felt a bit lost last year while going through the college applications. You need to research each college you are applying for, you need to gather data and improve your portfolio." Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. As a student at Gems Wellington Academy Al Khail, he had the advantage of guidance from school counsellors and an educational consultancy called UniHawk. However, Garv quickly realised that not every student has this privilege. From this realisation, Garv and his team developed a website that acts as a 'digital counsellor,' powered by AI and natural language models. The platform mimics the role of a real-life college advisor, asking students about their academic interests, personal background, and career goals. Based on this input, it generates a personalised portfolio and identifies areas where students can improve, whether through additional information or extracurricular activities. 'It gives you advise on what to do next and builds your portfolio in the background. So, it will put a spreadsheet of your interest and from that portfolio give the individual personalised guidance,' Garv explained. 'They look at you as an individual and identifies your strengths and weaknesses…that is something that AI can do pretty well which is why [we] utilise that idea.' One key feature of this platform is its ability to suggest extracurricular activities that align with a student's strengths and longterm goals, helping them stand out to competitive universities. Additionally, it offers feedback on college essays — especially helpful for applicants targeting Ivy League or other top-tier institutions. Garv also emphasised that the website offers constructive comments to guide improvements. 'It's definitely an aid to educational counsellors but the main focus is on students who don't have access to such resources. It's not a complete replacement but it's a good alternative for those who need it," said the 18-year-old. The platform was developed over the course of a year in collaboration with fellow students Ian Pannetier and Mahmoud Moursy. Among the app's innovative features is an 'Interviewer' tool that simulates college interview scenarios, and sections focused on identifying and addressing gaps in a student's academic or extracurricular profile. Currently, the upcoming app operates as a website that offers tailored advice on essays and goal-setting. However, the team envisions a much broader platform in the future. 'We want to create an entire database with college information,' Garv said, adding that this will be in addition to tools for portfolio development. Despite being in its early stages, the initiative has already received positive feedback. 'We've got good reviews from users in India, the United States, and other regions -- a testament to the global demand for accessible college guidance,' he added.
