The U.S. Open is a hardcourt Grand Slam organised by the United States Tennis Association. The tournament was first held in 1881 and originally known as the U.S. National Championships.
Here is what you need to know about the year's fourth and final major of the year:

* Arthur Ashe Stadium (capacity: 23,771) is named after the only Black man to win singles titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open. He was also a prominent human rights activist.
* Louis Armstrong Stadium (capacity: 14,053) was named after jazz great Armstrong who lived a few blocks from the venue until he died in 1971. It was opened during the 2018 event to replace the 1978 stadium of the same name and has a retractable roof like the main showcourt.
* Grandstand (capacity: 8,125) was first used at the U.S. Open on August 29, 2016, the opening day of that year's tournament.
WHO IS PLAYING?
* The top-ranked players automatically enter the main draw, with 32 seeds announced prior to the draw, to ensure they do not meet in the early rounds. Seedings are based on world rankings determined by the points players collect on the tour.
* Italian Jannik Sinner, who won his fourth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in July, is the men's world number one. He is chasing back-to-back U.S. Open titles.
* Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, a three-times major winner, is the top-ranked women's player and the defending champion.
* Novak Djokovic will resume his quest for a record-extending 25th men's Grand Slam singles title, while Spanish world number two and 2022 champion Carlos Alcaraz chases a sixth major crown.
* Organisers also hand out wildcards to local hopes and notable players who have dropped down the rankings.
* A new format in the mixed doubles is being introduced this year, with the event featuring many big-name singles players as it will be taking place over two days in the week before the main competition starts. Former singles champions Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu are among those who have teamed up.

The 33-year-old was caught near the ankle and forced to limp off the pitch during Saturday's match, with medical tests confirming a broken fibula. Isco had suffered a broken leg in May last year which needed two surgeries to fix. "Following medical tests, he has a new, non-displaced fracture in the middle third of his left fibula. This is a new traumatic injury unrelated to the previous injury, which has been resolved," Real Betis said in a statement on Sunday. "The player will undergo conservative treatment in the coming weeks, and his return will depend on the progress of the injury." Despite missing several games, he was instrumental last season with 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions as Betis finished sixth in LaLiga and reached the final of the Conference League, which they lost to Chelsea. An Israeli tank shell dashed that dream a decade early, his family said, killing Suleiman al-Obeid as he queued in southern Gaza this week to collect food. Obeid's widow Doaa al-Obeid now clutches the blue-and-white number 10 shorts he wore for his Gaza club, Al-Shati, one of the only mementos she has of her late husband, as she and her five children mourn the revered 41-year-old striker. "This is the most precious thing left behind by him," she said. The family have few other belongings of Obeid, whose home was destroyed in a bombardment earlier this year. They now live in a tent among the ruins of a neighbourhood of Gaza City. Obeid, likened by fans to Brazilian great Pele for his skills and goalscoring, hit headlines this week after Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah criticized a tribute to Obeid by Europe's governing body UEFA that did not mention the cause of death. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment and has not publicly commented on Obeid's death. Obeid, who had played for the Palestinian national team, was still playing for his club in Gaza when the war between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023. Hamas attacked Israeli towns and villages killing more than 1,200 people. Israel in response has laid waste to the Gaza Strip, a coastal enclave housing more than 2 million people, and killed some 61,000 Palestinians. Most have been killed by airstrikes, artillery and gunfire, but a growing number are starving to death. 'THIS PLAYER WAS A GAZELLE' Obeid kept playing throughout the hardship, his widow Doaa said. "He used to go training every day and never stopped, not a single day. Even during the crisis of war, in the midst of rockets, shelling and mass killing, he would go play. He used to gather his friends and loved ones and go play with them," she said. The Palestinian Football Association says hundreds of athletes and sports officials are among those killed by Israel's assault, with most sports facilities now destroyed. Palestinian soccer fans say they will focus not on Obeid's violent death but his legacy. "Children called him the Henry and Pele of Palestine," said Hassan al-Balawi, a barber in Gaza City, in a comparison also with French great Thierry Henry. "This player was a gazelle - when we stepped onto the pitch, we enjoyed watching him. All Palestinian soccer fans enjoyed Captain Suleiman al-Obeid." REUTERS
