Lt Gen D S Rana takes over as Commander-in-Chief of Andaman & Nicobar Command
New Delhi, Jun 1 (UNI) Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana assumed charge as the 18th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN) on Sunday.
The Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), based at Sri Vijaya Puram, is India's first and only joint services operational command, integrating the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard to safeguard national interests in the strategically vital Indian Ocean Region, a Defence Ministry statement said.
Lt Gen Rana was commissioned into the 10th Battalion of The Garhwal Rifles on December 19, 1987 and later had the honour of commanding the same battalion.
A graduate of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and a postgraduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, he is also an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi; Centre for National Defence Studies, Madrid, Spain; and the National Defense University, USA. His academic record is distinguished by topping multiple professional military courses.
In a career spanning over 37 years, the General Officer has held diverse operational, instructional, and staff appointments across various terrains and theatres. His service includes tenures with the Indian Military Training Team and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. He has commanded an Infantry Brigade and Division in the Eastern Sector and subsequently led the Gajraj Corps along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Lt Gen Rana has also served as an instructor at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun; College of Defence Management, Secunderabad; and the Higher Command Wing, Army War College, Mhow. His staff appointments include Brigade Major of an Independent Armoured Brigade, Deputy Director General Staff Duties, Brigadier Military Intelligence (East), Provost Marshal, and Director General Staff Duties at Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Army).
Prior to taking over as CINCAN, the General Officer served as Director General, Defence Intelligence Agency, making history as the first Chief of Defence Intelligence to be elevated to the rank of Commander-in-Chief — a reflection of the growing importance of defence intelligence and jointmanship in India's military leadership.
For his distinguished service, Lt Gen Rana has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Yudh Seva Medal (YSM), Sena Medal (SM), and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card.
As a young officer, he earned the Sena Medal and COAS Commendation for gallantry in Kashmir. He also holds a PhD in China's defence modernisation.

Sajad Lone accuses NC of 'only going after Kashmiris'
Srinagar, June 4 (UNI) J&K Peoples Conference President Sajad Lone on Wednesday lashed out at National Conference and its current administration, accusing them of targeting Kashmiris and running a system steeped in 'lies, inaction, and brazen corruption.' Addressing a press conference, Lone said the NC has no power to impact anyone except the common Kashmiri. 'They are going after the very people who voted for them. And those who didn't, they are being treated with callousness. This is exactly what we expected from them,' Lone remarked. He went on to cite rampant corruption and inefficiency in the current setup. 'We will begin collecting evidence, Insha'Allah. They have done no work till date—just lie after lie. Where is the government? What have they delivered to the people?' he questioned. Taking a swipe at the frequent official review meetings, he said, 'They've been holding these meetings for eons here—only to sip tea and eat kebabs. In our time, too, these review meetings meant nothing. Do you think Germany, Japan, UK or US became first-world nations through review meetings? It takes hard work, day and night, to build a nation.' He also raised concerns about the over-centralisation of power in the Chief Minister's office. 'The CM is handling 28 to 30 departments alone. Is he even human? If ministers can't be appointed out of fear or indecision, what is the point of being in power?' He criticised the system still being run by commissioner-secretaries as it was decades ago, asking, 'Why did people even vote if nothing was meant to change and ministers were only meant to stay busy with transfers?' On the recent demand by PDP for Kashmiri Pandit reservation in the Assembly, Lone supported the idea but questioned the timing and intent. 'Yes, Kashmiri Pandits must get political reservation. They are part of Kashmir and must not feel alienated. But why didn't PDP or Congress act when they were in power for 30-40 years? This selective remembrance of KP issues when out of power is hypocrisy. The same applies to human rights. Those who violated them now pretend to be their defenders — it's a cruel joke,' he said. Army ramps up trials of indigenous drones, loitering ammunition after Op Sindoor
After Operation Sindoor, the Army has intensified efforts to boost its air defence and battlefield readiness by testing a wide range of homegrown defence technologies. These include drones, loitering munitions, radar systems, and electronic warfare platforms -- all being put through rigorous trials at multiple field firing ranges across the Operation Sindoor, loitering munitions — unmanned aerial weapons that hover over an area before striking a target — were widely deployed, and hundreds of enemy drones from Pakistan were detected and neutralised by India's air defence the Army is building on those lessons by conducting field trials of indigenous systems at locations like Pokhran, Babina, and Joshimath, with dedicated air defence demonstrations underway in Agra and Gopalpur. These trials are designed to simulate real combat conditions, including the use of electronic warfare tools to assess how modern military systems perform under pressure. The platforms under evaluation include the unmanned aerial system, precision-guided munitions, drone systems that can fly without a runway, counter drone solutions, loitering munitions, drones with special vertical launch, precision multi-munition delivery systems, integrated drone detection and interdiction systems, light radars that work at low altitudes and electronic warfare to the Indian Army, all these state-of-the-art technologies are being tested keeping in mind the needs of the future battlefield. PM to lay foundation stone, dedicate projects worth over Rs 46,000 cr at Katra
Jammu, June 4 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Chenab bridge and visit the bridge deck and will also lay the foundation stone, inaugurate and dedicate to the nation multiple development projects worth over Rs 46,000 crore on June 6 at Katra in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. A PIB release said that PM Modi will visit J&K on June 6 and in line with his commitment to boost rail infrastructure and connectivity in the region, he will visit and inaugurate the Anji bridge and flag off Vande Bharat trains. The Prime Minister will also dedicate the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation, it said. The release said that the 272-km long USBRL project, built with around Rs 43,780 crore, includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country aiming to transform regional mobility and driving socio-economic integration. The Prime Minister will also flag off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Srinagar and back, said the release, adding that in a major boost to last-mile connectivity especially in border areas, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various road projects. He will lay the foundation stone for the road widening project from Rafiabad to Kupwara on National Highway-701 and the construction of Shopian bypass road on NH-444 worth over Rs 1,952 crore. He will also inaugurate two flyover projects at Sangrama Junction on National Highway-1 in Srinagar and at Bemina Junction on National Highway-44. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra worth over Rs 350 crore. It will be the first medical college in Reasi district contributing substantially to the healthcare infrastructure in the region. Chenab Rail Bridge, the architectural marvel, situated at a height of 359 meters above the river, is the world's highest railway arch bridge. It is a 1,315-metre-long steel arch bridge engineered to withstand seismic and wind conditions. A key impact of the bridge will be in enhancing connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. Through Vande Bharat train moving on the bridge, it will take about 3 hours to travel between Katra and Srinagar, reducing existing travel time by 2-3 hours.
