Texas Dems to return after Abbott ends special session that included redistricting
ABC News has not confirmed the date that Democrats plan to return or if they will return in a group, though one source told ABC News the House Democrats loosely plan on returning this weekend.
Those plans could change, one source noted, if Republicans go back on their word to begin a second special session on Friday.

Gov. Greg Abbott and House Speaker Dustin Burrows said Tuesday morning that the chamber will sine die on Friday, rendering the current special session adjourned if Democrats do not return by then.
Abbott would then call a second special session 'immediately,' he said in a statement. He indicated the second special session would include every item from the first and potentially additional items -- though his office could not say what those additional items might be
Abbott has said he is committed to calling special sessions, which can last a maximum of 30 days, as long as needed to pass the maps.
In a news release on Tuesday that did not share specific plans, House Democrats proclaimed victory, saying that they 'have killed this corrupt special session on behalf of Texas families -- exactly what we said we'd do when we left the state.'

Terry Cole, chosen to take over DC's police force, has spent 22 years at DEA
WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday named the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Terry Cole, as Washington's 'emergency police commissioner' as she carries out President Donald Trump's unprecedented decision to take over the Washington police department. Bondi said she's giving Cole the powers of police chief and the Metropolitan Police Department must receive Cole's approval before issuing any orders. The move comes less than a month after the U.S. Senate conformed Cole to be the DEA's leader and he was sworn in as head of the agency. Here's what to know about Cole: Three decades in law enforcement Cole was most recently Virginia's secretary of public safety and homeland security under Gov. Glenn Youngkin, according to his biography on the DEA's website. He's spent more than 31 years as a law enforcement officer, including 22 at the DEA. At the agency, he worked in Oklahoma, New York and Washington. He spent time overseas in Colombia, Afghanistan and the Middle East. The agency said he fought drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations. He was the DEA's acting regional director of Mexico, Canada and Central America when he retired from the federal government in 2020. Prior to joining the DEA, he was a police officer in New York State. Bachelor's in criminal justice Cole graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He has certificates in leadership from the University of Virginia and the University of Notre Dame Mendoza School of Business. Late-night announcement of a new job Bondi announced Cole's new role in a directive Thursday evening. It said Cole would assume 'powers and duties vested in the District of Columbia Chief of Police.' It wasn't immediately clear how this affected Pamela Smith, the city's current police chief, who works for the mayor. Hours earlier, Smith had directed Washington police to share information with immigration agencies regarding people not in custody — such as someone involved in a traffic stop or checkpoint. But the Justice Department said Bondi disagreed with the police chief's directive because it allowed for continued enforcement of 'sanctuary policies.' Bondi said she was rescinding that order as well as other department policies limiting inquires into immigration status and preventing arrests based solely on federal immigration warrants. All new directives must now receive approval from Cole, the attorney general said.

Anchorage prepares for Trump-Putin summit as some pro-Ukraine protesters hit the streets
ANCHORAGE — Over 100 protesters, including many Ukraine supporters, took to the streets of Alaska's biggest city on Thursday night ahead of the highly anticipated meeting between President Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The demonstrators gathered on a popular street corner in Anchorage hours before the Trump-Putin summit in the 49th state — their first face-to-face sit-down in years in which they'll discuss finding peace in Ukraine. But many of the protesters, who appeared to be mainly Democrats, didn't have high hopes over the peace talks and expressed dismay that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wouldn't be present. 4 Lisa Engberg and Jo Bennett hold signs in protest of the Trump-Putin summit. Diana Nerozzi Barbara Hood, who has lived in Anchorage for 60 years, said she brought a large Ukrainian flag with her to make a statement. 'I don't think it's what they're here for, I don't think it's what's going to happen,' Hood said of prospective peace. Trump is set to speak to Putin Friday morning at Elmendorf Air Force Base, where the two leaders will then hold a joint press conference. Trump has stressed that the talks with Putin are the first stage, where he will get more information on what the Russian dictator wants. 'I don't want them here in Alaska,' she went on. The signs at the protest, which was seemingly only attended by Democrats, ranged from questioning whether Alaska would be next in Putin's landgrabs, to calling for Putin to leave the state.
