World champion bagpiper who went on drunken wrecking spree caught by cops - after his £45k electric car turned him in
A world champion bagpiper caused tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage during a drunken wrecking spree in his £45,000 electric car.
Accountant Jonathan Greenlees smashed into four other cars - including the same one twice - while he was more than three times over the limit.
It was Greenlees' own hi-tech Polestar car which first alerted the police to him crashing while the sound of several loud bangs brought witnesses out into the street.
Greenlees admitted driving dangerously and drunk while he was supposed to be staying at the Crieff Hydro Hotel in Perthshire on 14 April this year.
The 51-year-old resigned as Finance Director of Securigroup Ltd the day after his arrest and just six months after taking up the post with the Glasgow-based company.
Fiscal depute Elizabeth Hodgson told Perth Sheriff Court that the dangerous driving lasted for almost 30 minutes and was recorded in full by Greenlees' own dashcam device.
She said: 'From around 11pm people in the neighbourhood and roads around Crieff heard a series of collisions and came out into the street to investigate.
'The exited their homes and found the accused sitting in the driver's seat of his vehicle, a black Polestar. Police arrived ten minutes later.

'They noticed damage to multiple vehicles and traced the accused within his vehicle and trying to start it. He was asked if he was injured and replied that he wasn't.
'He was asked to exit and it was clear he was dazed, confused and slurring his words. An ambulance attended and they assessed that he was fit for custody.
'He identified himself as the driver. The usual procedures were carried out and the accused provided a lower reading of 70 mics [limit 22 mics]. He was arrested and placed in a locked cell.
'His dashcam footage shows the entire event and lasts for about half an hour. It shows how dangerous the driving is - striking multiple vehicles, stalling and running up onto the kerb.'
Defence solicitor Jim Brady told the court his client believed he had suffered a reaction to taking medicine and alcohol during the evening and could not remember what happened.
He said: 'This incident came as a result of a combination of alcohol and a very unusual reaction because of medication [Citalopram] the accused was taking.
'He can't recall leaving the table, the hotel or even driving the car. He had been taking the medication for two years or longer than that and there has never been any incident where the consumption of alcohol has resulted in anything at all.
'He was going to be staying at the Crieff Hydro. He would not normally risk driving at all, having taken any drink. His colleagues told him how much he had had to drink, and it was four to five glasses of wine.'
Greenlees, Wykeham Road, Glasgow, admitted driving drunk from Crieff Hydro car park, on the A822 towards Muthill and on various other roads in Crieff on 14 April.
He also admitted driving dangerously and colliding with several stationary cars, driving at excessive speed, failing to maintain lane discipline, repeatedly driving on the wrong side and striking the kerb.
Sheriff Alison McKay deferred sentence for social work reports, a restriction of liberty order assessment, and for the dashcam footage to be played in court. Greenlees was ordained to appear.
She said: 'I would suggest he drove at the higher end of dangerousness, and put not only his own safety, but the safety of the public at risk.
'I am pretty sure all people who take anti-depressants are warned about the danger of taking alcohol at the same time. Maybe he has been getting away with it for two years.'

"Come and get me" Mob boss Mark Richardson's pal taunted Mr Big's men before latest attacks
A Transit van was blown up at a home linked to Richardson's pal Paddy Beatson on Niddrie Marischal Crescent in Edinburgh in the early hours of Monday morning. Mob boss Mark Richardson's pal taunted henchmen working for Dubai-based gangster Ross McGill before he was targeted for the third time in a firebomb attack. A Transit van linked to Richardson's associate Paddy Beatson was blown up outside his home on Niddrie Marischal Crescent in Edinburgh in the early hours of Monday morning. Just days earlier, Beatson, 38, mocked McGill's enforcers - a faceless gang called Tamo Junto (TMJ) - in an online post as he urged them to "come and get him". He wrote: "I'm home, if anyone's looking for me. I've never once ran. I've never even left my bit, other than to take my boy on a holiday. "If anyone wants it with me today, get on me. I won't be roped into a slagging match or arguments with fake accounts. I don't do that." The Ford van at Beatson's home was torched at around 4am on Monday. Half a mile away - and at the same time -a Range Rover believed to be owned by another associate of Richardson's was firebombed at a property on the capital's Campion Road. Cops are treating both incidents as suspicious. Images taken in the aftermath show the burnt out shells of both vehicles. Tamo Junto were quick to claim responsibility for the attacks in a video sent to the Record shortly after. Footage shared by the gang shows flames bursting out of the Range Rover and the Transit van. In one clip a hooded figure can be seen standing with an accelerant canister before he backs away from the fireball. The video plays the song Two Tribes by 80s pop group Frankie Goes to Hollywood and it ends with emojis of a black pawn chess piece and a sand timer appearing side by side. Beaton's home has been attacked twice previously in recent months. On April 17, cops were alerted to possible fire damage at the property - and on March 20, shots were reportedly fired at the home by a masked gunman. The property on Campion Road, where the Range Rover was torched, was also on attacked before on May 10 - the same day Ross McGill 'rejected a truce offer' with his enemies. Pictures taken at the time showed windows boarded up in the wake of the attack after men were filmed kicking in the door. McGill has been waging war on Richardson and his cronies in a series of violent attacks since March. We previously told how the pair are locked in a bitter feud after McGill was ripped off in a £500k cocaine deal. Homes, cars and businesses belonging to associates of Richardson have been hit in a series of firebombings and shootings. Machete thugs also pounced on his close ally David McMillan Snr at his home on Pitcairn Grove in the city last month. Police said they are treating the attack on the 56-year-old as attempted murder. It was the third time McMillan had been targeted in recent weeks. On April 17, two masked thugs set fire to his front door while children slept inside. The culprits torched the property before fleeing the scene. Just three weeks later on May 8, a white Land Rover SUV in his driveway went up in flames after his family returned home from a shopping trip. McGill's enforcers have also gone after the notorious Daniel crime clan during the feud due to their association with Richardson, with properties linked to the clan torched as violence spread to Glasgow. In April, a carpet and flooring unit owned by Daniel enforcer Craig 'Rob Roy' Gallagher was torched in Bishopbriggs. And in Milton, a female pensioner and 12-year-old boy were injured after hoods stormed their home looking for a high-ranking member of the Daniel family. McGill's men went on to target the home of Steven 'Bonzo' Daniel, as well as the properties of his mum Annette, uncle Norman and sister Kelly 'Bo' Green. Last month, two men were attacked with a machete at a garage owned by Robert Daniel in East Kilbride. Last Saturday night, key Lyons clan lieutenants Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan were assassinated outside Monaghan's bar in Fuengirola. Police Scotland later released a statement to say the force currently has 'no intelligence' to link the shootings in Fuengirola to the ongoing turf war, or that the shootings were organised from within Scotland - but underworld sources have claimed that is not the case as fingers were pointed at rival hoods. Just minutes after the double assassination, a posh mansion in the Renfrewshire village of Bridge of Weir was torched. Last week TMJ - who have been known for showcasing their attacks online - took credit for the firebombing as they released a picture of the blaze alongside a chilling threat. The gang wrote: 'If you write stuff about us online or try to organise violence against us. We will target you and your family. 'Don't steal from us. Don't threaten us. Don't switch on us. Or we will relentlessly come after you.' Police Scotland has arrested 42 people in connection with a series of linked incidents relating to the war across the country in an investigation called Operation Portaledge.

Tragedy as talented footballer, 11, who 'always had a smile on his face' dies
Othniel Adoma had "electric pace, dazzling footwork," his team, Crowthorne FC Juniors, said in a statement following the child's death of injuries suffered in a car crash A football club has paid tribute to an 11-year-old boy who died in a minibus crash on the M4. Othniel Adoma "always had a smile on his face," his side, Crowthorne FC Juniors, said following the tragedy. The youngster died on Thursday, more than three weeks after the single-vehicle crash on the motorway near Reading, Berkshire. A six-year-old boy, who has not been named, also died in the collision. Othniel was a talented footballer, who Bracknell-based team Crowthorne FC Juniors said possessed "electric pace, dazzling footwork". The club, which is set to hold a vigil on Friday evening, said in a statement: "Everyone at Crowthorne FC is devastated by the tragic passing of one of our own, Othniel Adoma, who sadly lost his life this week. Othniel was a talented young footballer, full of promise, who spent three wonderful years with our club. He was loved deeply by his coaches, his teammates, and everyone whose life he touched. "He will be remembered not only for his electric pace, dazzling footwork, and the goals and assists he delivered week after week — but more importantly, for the incredible person he was. Othniel always had a smile on his face and brought joy and laughter to those around him." Sheffield crash: Boy, 16, dies in 'hit-and-run smash' involving Audi and electric bike "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family during this unimaginably difficult time. We are here to support them in any way we can, while also respecting their need for privacy as they grieve," the tribute added. "Our hearts remain with Othniel's family, and we encourage the community to come together and show just how loved and special their little boy truly was. Let's stand united — in love, in remembrance, and in honour of a beautiful young soul who will forever be in our hearts." A fundraiser has already raised more than £7,000 towards a memorial for the youngster, who was from Bracknell, Berkshire. The vigil will be held at Birch Hill Recreation Ground in the town this week. Thames Valley Police continues to investigate the crash and confirmed no arrests have been made. A white Ford Transit minibus overturned on the link road at junction 10 of the eastbound M4 for the A329(M) near Reading on May 11. Five other children who were injured in the collision have now been discharged from hospital. Speaking previously, investigating officer Detective Sergeant Lyndsey Blackaby, of the serious collision investigation unit at Thames Valley Police, said: 'My thoughts, and the thoughts of everyone at Thames Valley Police, are with the family and friends of Othniel Adoma. Othniel's family has released these beautiful pictures of Othniel in his memory. Othniel's family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult time."

Engineer tells court he was treated as Perth fire tragedy hotel murder suspect
A security engineer who clambered into a fire tragedy Perth hotel to reclaim his CCTV cameras told a court how he was treated by police as a murder suspect. Jamie Grierson entered the New County Hotel through an upstairs window just weeks after the horrific blaze in January 2023 that claimed the lives of three people. The 37-year-old said he went into the building to take back 15 camera units after a row with the hotel owner who, he claimed, was refusing to pay for them. Mr Grierson was accused of breaking into the hotel and stealing the cameras. He wept as he told Perth Sheriff Court how he was taken in for questioning after police raided his girlfriend's home. 'They pretty much charged me with three counts of murder,' he said. The Courier understands Mr Grierson was never charged with murder but he was questioned as a suspect before he gave police his explanation for being inside the building. After a trial that has rumbled on for nearly a year, Mr Grierson was found not guilty of breaking into the New County Hotel and stealing the cameras. The trial has exposed the squalid and dangerous condition of the County Hotel in the weeks leading up to the tragedy. Fire swept through the building in the early hours of January 2 2023, claiming the lives of sisters Donna Janse Van Rensburg, 44, and Sharon McLean, 47, from Aberdeen, and Edinburgh man Keith Russell, 38. Donna's dog Joey also died. The court heard Mr Grierson had repeatedly warned the hotel's owner about the state of the 23-bedroom venue. On the sixth and final day of his trial, Mr Grierson said he had agreed to install cameras for the hotel's owner, who he knew only as Omar. But he said he halted work after getting an unusual request. 'He (Omar) had requested Ring doorbell cameras on some of the rooms. 'I'm not prepared to do something that is clearly not right. 'It was the most bizarre thing I had ever heard.' Mr Grierson said he was involved in a 'heated' discussion with Omar about payment for the 15 cameras. The owner told him 'do what you want', which Mr Grierson believed was permission to retrieve the devices. He also said he later received a text from Omar or someone else connected to the hotel, telling him: 'Go ahead and get your stuff.' Mr Grierson went to the hotel on the day after the fire and explained his predicament to police standing guard outside. 'They told me it was a civil matter, they basically shrugged it off.' Mr Grierson got a ladder to remove one external CCTV unit, which he said was witnessed by officers. He came back in the small hours of February 15 and used a longer ladder to climb through a back window on an upper floor. Inside he uninstalled the remaining cameras, some he said were fire damaged. He told his solicitor Linda Clark he did not touch any other valuables inside, including laptops, computers and a stocked bar. 'The police raided my girlfriend's home,' he said. 'They came through the door and pretty much charged me with three counts of murder.' Sheriff Clair McLachlan told Mr Grierson: 'You accepted that your actions were ill-advised. 'But that does not mean to say they crossed the line into criminality. 'I believe you thought you had the genuine consent of the hotel owner. 'And I note these cameras were the only items that you recovered.' She found him not guilty, saying it was difficult to pinpoint any 'nefarious purposes' he may have had. 'Sorry for wasting anyone's time,' he said as he left the court. Witness Lia Payne, 48, who had been in a relationship with Grierson at the time, earlier told the trial: 'He was telling me about all the problems there. 'He showed me photos of rats. It was a hell hole.' She spoke of piles of black bags in the kitchen, as well as drug addicts and sex workers coming in through a back door. When interviewed by police about the alleged thefts, Mr Grierson said he was forced to halt work at the building due to its hazardous state. 'We were in rooms downstairs and it became apparent they weren't the most hygienic. 'There were rooms full of rubbish bags, there was junk everywhere. 'You couldn't walk anywhere without breathing in flies.' There had been 'electrical cables hanging loose everywhere,' Grierson said. 'I explained to the owner that due to the state of the hotel, we couldn't do any more work until it was cleaned and rectified.' He downed tools after fitting eight cameras. Grierson said he spoke to a member of staff about tidying up the building. 'I genuinely think the guy was drunk, I could smell alcohol on him.' He described a female employee as a 'user or a junkie, if you like.' 'She had people coming back and forth at night,' he said. Hotel owner Rashid Hussain died just months after the fire, in August 2023. His company Perth Hospitality Ltd went into liquidation over an unpaid energy bill. Emergency services say a joint probe into the blaze is still ongoing.
