Playing alongside brother an 'unbelievable feeling'
Joel Colwill says he and his brother Rubin have achieved a lifelong dream by playing together for Cardiff City. The brothers have featured in every game in Cardiff's unbeaten start to the new 23, has been involved with the Bluebirds' first team since 2021. At three years younger, Joel has had to bide him time, but he has grasped his opportunity with both hands this season. "It's unbelievable. The first start I had with him (Rubin) was against Peterborough when he was captain. That's what we both dreamed of since we were five or six years old. It was a really proud moment for me and my family," said Joel Colwill."I remember in something like the 60th minute looking around the stadium, there were a good few people there, and thinking this crazy - both me and him playing in front of thousands of people. It was a surreal moment."After making his senior debut for Cardiff in 2023, Colwill was sent out on loan last impressed during his time with Cheltenham Town in League Two, before spending the second part of the season with League One side Exeter City. He believes that his time away from Cardiff playing regular first team football helped him develop and mature as a player."It was obviously very important for my career to go out and get those games. I think without those games it would be harder to play now," Colwill added. "I learned a lot about what men's football is about. It helped me make smart decisions, and how to use my body better. "The demands of the game is so much more when you're playing for a first team."After breaking into the Cardiff team, Joel is now hoping to emulate Rubin once again by playing for has nine caps for his country, and was part of the squads for Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, "He (Rubin) was always the first to do things. He went to Wales camps when he was 14. And I remember thinking that's what I want to do."The way his career has gone has pushed me to be the best I can be as well. "It's always been a competitive rivalry between me and him, we both push each other as much as we can. "Every footballer in Wales dreams of playing for Wales one day, and it's definitely something I'd love to do in the future. "Playing and playing well gives you the best chance to get into the Wales team. I'm just trying to play as well as I can, play as much as I can and whatever happens, happens."

Sheffield Wednesday want Cardiff City star as Barry-Murphy gives verdict on outcast trio
Sheffield Wednesday want Cardiff City star as Barry-Murphy gives verdict on outcast trio Three players appear to have been frozen out, while one is reportedly attracting interest from the Championship Ethan Horvath of Cardiff City celebrates with teammates following the team's victory in the penalty shootout against Stoke (Image: Getty Images) Cardiff City goalkeeper Ethan Horvath has reportedly emerged as a target for Sheffield Wednesday as the Championship club scramble to solve their growing goalkeeping crisis. The USA international, who has yet to feature for the Bluebirds this season, is being lined up by the Owls as a short-term replacement for first-choice keeper Pierce Charles, who has been sidelined with a shoulder injury, according to Football League World. Horvath, 30, made 33 Championship appearances for Cardiff over the past two campaigns but has slipped down the pecking order following the summer arrival of Nathan Trott on loan from FC Copenhagen. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community. He has not been named in any of Brian Barry-Murphy's matchday squads so far this term and it is understood the shot-stopper is free to leave, with Matt Turner occupying the back-up 'keeper role on the bench at present. Indeed there are two others in a similar position to Horvath, with fellow goalkeeper Jak Alnwick also not featuring in any of the matchday squads this term. Jesper Daland, meanwhile, has not been seen since the home game against Peterborough United, with Barry-Murphy revealing he is in talks with other clubs over an exit. When asked by WalesOnline about the frozen-out trio, Barry-Murphy said on Thursday: "Jesper was in discussions with another club. I have no update on that because I have no idea how close it is or what the progress has been on that. "The situation hasn't changed from my point of view. "No update on Ethan or Jak. I don't know the conversations they may or may not be having with their representatives. "But as it is now, they are our players." Barry-Murphy further clarified saying that Daland was in talks with other clubs, but, to his knowledge Horvath and Alnwick were not. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here. Reports, however, suggest Wednesday are weighing up either a free transfer or emergency loan deal to bring Horvath to Hillsborough, with boss Henrik Pedersen currently without a senior goalkeeper to call upon. Horvath has significant Championship experience with Nottingham Forest, Luton Town and Cardiff, as well as Champions League outings during his time at Belgian giants Club Brugge. He played a key role in Luton's promotion-winning season in 2022/23, keeping 20 clean sheets under Rob Edwards as the Hatters reached the Premier League via the play-offs. A move to Yorkshire would hand Horvath the chance to get back on the pitch and provide Wednesday with an experienced option as they contend with a squad crisis under owner Dejphon Chansiri. --- *Follow all of our social channels to ensure you stay up to date with the latest Bluebirds news. Shrewsbury boss Appleton 'very concerned' by form
Beleaguered Shrewsbury Town boss Michael Appleton says he is "very concerned" about his side's poor form and they must be "miles better" if their fortunes are to slumped to a fourth successive defeat - and third on the bounce in League Two - with Wednesday's 4-1 hammering by Notts result leaves Appleton's side with just one point from their first four league games and second bottom of the table in 23rd place."I take responsibility," Appleton, who signed a two-year contract in May, told BBC Radio Shropshire."I'm the manager and I've done this a long time. I'm not going to shy away from anything."We have to be better. We have to be miles better - but it's my job to try to make that happen." Following relegation from League One last term, Town have failed to find any momentum at the start of this term in the fourth tier, with Appleton saying he has had to deal with the "baggage" of last season's addition, director of football Micky Moore has left the club and a potential takeover of the club rumbles the field, Town have scored only one goal and conceded 10. Their solitary point has come from a goalless draw at home to Bromley on the opening latest defeat by the Magpies exposed familiar frailties despite Appleton's tactical tweak of playing four central defenders in a back four as Town fell 2-0 behind after 20 minutes at Meadow John Marquis scoring Town's first league goal of the season to give Shrewsbury hope before half-time, the home side clinically picked the visitors off in the second period to seal a comfortable win. 'A lot of voices that weren't happy with each other' "There're nowhere to hide," Appleton said. "I'm very concerned. The reality is we need to be better, keep clean sheets and try to score that first goal."Scoring the first goal gives you so much more opportunity to get something out of the game but we haven't done that in a while."Appleton has brought in eight new players this summer in a bid to reshape his squad and, with the exception of young loanees Elyh Harrison and Tommy McDermott, nearly all have experience of the English Football is that aspect that is leaving Appleton scratching his head over performances."It's not as if there's kids in there," he said."There's a lot of experienced players in there who know this level and have done well and for whatever reason are not performing to the capabilities they can do."They're going to need picking up. I didn't have to say too much [after the game] because they were saying it all, which is a positive thing."There were a lot of voices who weren't happy with each other. Hopefully that's a good sign going forward." With the next game coming on Saturday against Swindon Town, Appleton says they can do little else but try to put things right as quickly as possible."I do and certainly all the players do - I can't wait for Saturday now," he said."It's moments like this, when you're under the pump and people are coming for you, that you find out who's with you and who's not, who's capable of getting points in games, getting goals and keeping clean sheets."These are the moments when you find out what you've got in your dressing room."I'm finding out about the players early which is a good thing."
