Five-way tie for Round 1 lead at The Open 2025 with Scheffler, McIlroy in contention: Live reaction and updates

Through the first round of The Open 2025, there is a five-way tie for the lead at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland Getty Images
The first day of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club featured rain, windy conditions and a lengthy opening round. It produced a five-way tie for the lead atop the leaderboard at 4-under-par between Harris English, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Jacob Skov Olesen, Haotong Li and Christian Bezuidenhout.
Local boy Rory McIlroy is in contention with a 1-under 70 despite only hitting two fairways. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is one off the lead after firing a 3-under 68, and he only hit three fairways. Two-time major winner Jon Rahm, who entered this tournament among the favorites to hoist the Claret Jug, is in the hunt with a 1-under 70, three shots off the lead.
English had the best round among the afternoon wave of golfers, getting into a share of the lead. While the rain subsided, the wind started to pick up, leading to a long first round that was still going on after 9 p.m. local time.
The second round begins at 1:30 a.m. ET on Friday (6:30 a.m. local time). Getty Images
Tyrell Hatton is interviewed on NBC and says he's generally pleased with his round, but...
"The wind certainly picked up the last 3-4 holes. ... It would have been nice to see some more putts go in, but I guess I can always find something to complain about"
McIlroy E, Thomas +1, Fleetwood +3 (16)
From the deep grass, McIlroy's shot seems too strong but he catches the backstop, which guides the ball back towards the center of the green. Fleetwood will also have a birdie putt coming up while Thomas recovers from a poor first shot, chipping a beauty to set up a short par putt.
English -4, Taylor +4, Finau -2
That's a beautiful two-shot birdie on 16 for Tony Finau! He's now at 2-under and two back of the lead...
Rose -2, MacIntyre E, DeChambeau +6 (17)
DeChambeau's intermediate game is failing him as another approach shot if off target and down the slope from the green. MacIntyre will also need an up and down for par while Rose earned a long birdie putt. Getty Images
McIlroy E, Thomas +1, Fleetwood +3 (16)
Underwhelming first shot again for McIlroy, leaving himself an in-between shot to the green. Somehow Thomas' is a bit worse, well right and into the thick grass.
English -4, Taylor +3, Kim -1 (15)
Among those lurking a little further down the leaderboard is English's playing partner Tom Kim, who sinks a birdie on 15 to fall back to 1-under-par.
Rose -2, MacIntyre E, DeChambeau +6 (17)
DeChambeau continues to dig himself a hole and he simply cannot climb out of it on 17, bogeying the hole.
Rose gave a birdie putt a decent roll but settled for an easy par. The same goes for MacIntyre. Getty Images
Tyrell Hatton gave some trademark grimaces with his second shot on 18, but it was still plenty for a solid two-putt for par. That puts the bow on a 3-under-par 68 for Hatton's opening round, and the Englishman gets a nice applause from the spectators as he walks off. Getty Images
English -4, Taylor +3, Finau -1
He can't convert the long birdie putt, but it was far from an easy two-putt for par for Harris English. He sinks it anyway, looking dangerous down the home stretch... Getty Images
McIlroy E, Thomas +1, Fleetwood +3 (15)
Not a bad shot there from McIlroy on 16, missing the green but not by much. Fleetwood joins him in a similar spot while Thomas plops his shot down in the center of the green.
McIlroy does well from there, giving himself a short, makeable par putt. Getty Images
Rose -2, MacIntyre E, DeChambeau +5 (16)
Another tee ball into the tall grass for DeChambeau on 16. Rose opts for a shorter shot off the tee but catches the fairway and MacIntyre, after two strong shots, is looking for 22 feet for par.
Three straight holes with the same results for Bryson as his second shot leaves a lot of work for par, sailing an approach shot well past the green. Rose finds the green from the fairway but has more than 30 feet to go for birdie.
Harman 69, McNealy 69, Niemann 70
Keep an eye on this group! Americans Brian Harman and Maverick McNealy have all wrapped up their rounds at a 69 on the day. As of now, that's good for two strokes off the lead. Third member of the group, LIV breakout star Joaquin Niemann, nearly joins them but bogeys 18 to end up with a 70, still in red figures at 1-under-par.
McIlroy E, Thomas +1, Fleetwood +3 (15)
Uneven lie for McIlroy and it gets him. His approach is rolling towards the flag but catches the slope and his ball rapidly makes a turn away from the flag. Fleetwood went long with his second shot but chipped within seven feet to recover and set up a par opportunity but he cannot convert, settling for a bogey.
Similar story for Thomas, getting himself within five feet for an opportunity to par the hole. He nearly canned that one.
Well, McIlroy recovered too and salvaged a par. Good work from him and Thomas shaking off poor second shots. Getty Images
Harris English has made more difficult putts than that one on 14, but he can't hit his putt straight on and drops back. We're back to a five-way tie for the lead at 4-under.
Rose -2, MacIntyre E, DeChambeau +5 (16)
Pars all around on 16. Consecutive strong recoveries for DeChambeau but pars will not be enough to get him trending back in the right direction.
McIlroy E, Thomas +1, Fleetwood +2 (14)
McIlroy's drive was on the fairway for a while but kept on rolling, landing 333 yards away from the tee box in the fringe. Fleetwood finds the fairway but Thomas finds the rough along the right side of the fairway.
His second shot is launched over the green, leaving a demanding up and down for par. The ball seemed like it would hold the edge of the green but instead trickled down the hill. Getty Images
It's been a rough day for Jordan Speith, with four bogeys in his first eight holes before finding his footing.
But he finally gets some good momentum after a long run of pars with a birdie on 15!
Rose -2, MacIntyre E, DeChambeau +5 (15)
DeChambeau is green hunting on 16 but instead he'll need to muster another difficult up and down to save par. He's been out of sorts. MacIntyre hits a beauty though, getting his first shot with 13 feet of the cup while Rose's first shot lands of the green but a nice chip gives him a tap in for par. Getty Images
Glover -2, Vegas +1, Kim -1
Just brutal for the one-time co-leader Lucas Glover, who once again misses very makable birdie putt. He's a full three strokes back of Harris English now.

British Open cut line: Bryson DeChambeau squeaks into the weekend, while Brooks Koepka is among big names heading home

Bryson DeChambeau woke up Friday morning with a 7-over first round at the British Open around his neck. He knew he'd need to do something special in order to make the weekend, and he did, firing a 6-under 65 to finish the day at 1-over to make the British Open cut. "I woke up this morning and I said, you know what, I can't give up," DeChambeau said. "My dad always told me never to give up, just got to keep going, and that's what I did today. I was proud of the way I fought back, really persevered through some emotionally difficult moments, and to hold myself together and not get pissed and slam clubs and throw things and all that like I wanted to." That perseverance rewarded him with two weekend tee times, which he did not get a year ago. The top 70 and ties make the cut at The Open. That number toggled between 1-over and 2-over all afternoon. It finally settled at 1-over, meaning a birdie on 17 loomed large for DeChambeau. Notable names who are on the wrong side of the cut line include Jason Day (+2), Zach Johnson (+3), Patrick Cantlay (+3), Patrick Reed (+5), Min Woo Lee (+6), Brooks Koepka (+7), Sahith Theegala (+7), Collin Morikawa (+7) and Adam Scott (+9). For Cantlay, Reed and Koepka, missing the cut is a blow to their Ryder Cup chances, in that they're not giving captain Keegan Bradley good reasons for him to make them a captain's pick. The last time the tournament was played at Royal Portrush, in 2019, the cut stood at +1. The lowest cuts relative to par since 1969, when the R&A began keeping stats for the category, were -1 in both 2006 (Royal Liverpool) and 1990 (St. Andrews). The lowest cut by total strokes was 141 in 2021 (Royal St. George's); a +2 cut would be 144 strokes.

'Absolute, true mastery': Scottie Scheffler goes low, takes British Open lead to weekend

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland – Forget about all the pre-championship talk that Scottie Scheffler still needs to learn how to play links. On Friday, the world No. 1 golfer could have taught a Master Class, reeling off eight birdies to shoot 7-under 64 at Royal Portrush Golf Club and grab a one-stroke lead over Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick at the midway point of the 153rd British Open. 'Tiger Woodsdid this, Jack Nicklaus did this, and I think it's a testament to the truest mastery, the absolute height of the game, and it's so rare that you see someone take this game to a level where there is no past, there is no future, they're just completely in the moment,' Golf Channel's Brandel Chamblee said. 'What we've seen the last two days is absolute, true mastery.' After shooting 68 on Thursday despite hitting only three fairways, Scheffler found the short grass more often and his putter, which had been more foe than friend on slower greens than he is used to last week in Scotland, heated up. He ranks second in Strokes Gained: putting this week. It added up to his 19th career 36-hole lead or co-lead on Tour and fourth this season. Scheffler, who won the PGA Championship for his third career major in May, is poised to win a third leg of the career Grand Slam. Not even a wild weather day could slow him down as he improved to a 36-hole total of 10-under-par 132. 'It was super sunny when we were on the driving range, I'm out there in short sleeves, it's warm out. Then we get to the 1st hole, it's still sunny. Then all of a sudden, you look around and it's super dark and it starts pouring rain,' he said. 'You're like, boy, I wonder how long this is going to last.' Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 U.S. Open champ, would like his run of good form to continue for at least two more days. He opened with rounds of 67 and 66 as he attempts to become the first Englishman since Nick Faldo 33 years ago to win the British Open. Fitzpatrick will be paired alongside Scheffler in the final group on Saturday but said the pressure will be on Scheffler. 'He's going to have the expectation to go out and dominate. He's an exceptional player. He's World No. 1, and we're seeing Tiger-like stuff. I think the pressure is for him to win the golf tournament,' Fitzpatrick said. 'For me obviously I hope I'm going to have some more home support than him, but it's an exciting position for me to be in given where I was earlier this year.' Scheffler and Fitzpatrick have company from Brian Harman (65) and Haotong Li (67), who are two back. Harman won the 2023 British Open and looks to have regained the form that allowed him to cruise to the title two years ago. 'One of my favorite traits about Brian is when people count him out and don't believe he can do something, it almost motivates him more to be that bulldog,' Golf Channel's Johnson Wagner said. 'He's a gritty guy, he's a little undersized so people always underestimate him like they did at [the 2023 Open] and he just slammed the door on them. I wouldn't count Brian out just yet.' Further down the leaderboard is a party of five at 5 under, including Dane Rasmus Hojgaard, Englishman Tyrrell Hatton (the top LIV contender), Scotland's Robert MacIntyre and Americans Harris English and Chris Gotterup. Hojgaard's twin brother, Nicolai, and Tony Finau are a shot further back at 4 under and T-10. Among those lurking at 3 under include Northern Ireland's own Rory McIlroy and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley. 'I'm excited for that opportunity,' McIlroy said. 'I didn't have this opportunity six years ago, so to play an extra two days in this atmosphere in front of these crowds, I'm very excited for that. I feel like my game's definitely good enough to make a run.' Bryson DeChambeau rallied to make the cut on the number with a 65 on Friday. Seventy golfers advanced to the weekend with a 36-hole total of 1-over 143 or better. Among those sent packing were Collin Morikawa, who for the first time in his career failed to record a top 10 at a major; Patrick Cantlay, who missed his third cut in a row at a major; LIV's Joaquin Niemann and Australian Adam Scott. The Claret Jug and the honor to be called Champion Golfer of the Year still is very much up for grabs but it won't be easy to chase down world No. 1. 'It would not surprise me at all if he leaves everyone in the rearview mirror,' Chamblee said.
