Odisha Police rescues 28-day-old infant allegedly sold by parents
Police rescued the infant from the house of a couple at Paikamal in neighbouring Bargarh district and handed it over to the child welfare committee (CWC), Titlagarh sub-divisional police officer Kalyan Behera told PTI over the phone.
She, however, said no one was detained or arrested in the case as there had been no formal complaint.
Bolangir district CWC in-charge chairperson Lina Babu confirmed that the infant was rescued from the house of a couple at Paikmal.
'We have not started an inquiry into the matter as the infant's rescue was our priority. During the day, we will launch a probe and lodge a police," she said.
According to sources, the alleged incident of child sale came to light on Sunday from Bagdera village under Bhaleigaon Panchayat in Titilagarh sub-division.
A poverty-stricken couple, identified as Nila and Kanak Rana, has been accused of selling their newborn daughter for Rs 20,000, police said.
However, the Paikmal couple denied allegations of purchasing the child, but claimed that they brought the baby keeping in view her biological parents' poverty.
Officials said Nila and Kanak are both remarried. Nila has three daughters from his first wife, while Kanak has one daughter from her previous marriage.
Citing financial distress, the Rana couple allegedly handed over the newborn to the other family.
'We have not sold her. We gave the baby for her better upbringing, not for money," Nila Rana told the CWC.
In November 2024, police and CWC had rescued a newborn that was allegedly sold by her mother after her birth to a private hospital in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The incident was reported from Lathor area in Bolangir district. PTI AAM MNB

'If they were truly the same terrorists, then this is good, they have been given a lesson that terror can never succeed," Abdullah was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. 'I have not seen them, I do not know who they are. Only those who have seen them (the terrorists), can identify them." This came after Amit Shah announced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that Suleiman Shah alias Hashim Musa, and two others – identified as Jibran and Hamza Afghani – were killed in the Dachigam encounter in Srinagar under 'Operation Mahadev' on Monday. 'In the freezing heights, our Army and IB officers kept moving through the terrain to intercept their signals. On July 22, their presence in the area was finally confirmed. The Army, CRPF, and the Jammu and Kashmir Police jointly carried out a coordinated operation to surround them," Amit Shah said. Killer buses on Kochi roads: Police report blames lack of background checks for drivers
Kochi: The city police on Tuesday submitted a report in high court highlighting the increasing number of road accidents in Kochi. The report was filed by Kochi city traffic (west) assistant commissioner of police K A Mohamed Nizar, in connection with petitions related to the poor condition of roads and increasing road accidents. The report highlighted the lack of proper qualifications and background checks for drivers employed by private bus operators. It recommended that police verification and character certificates be made mandatory for issuing heavy vehicle driving licenses, in the interest of public safety. Although the motor vehicles department (MVD) had issued a circular in this regard, implementation has been delayed due to objections raised by various unions. In an effort to control speeding and reckless driving by private buses, a letter was sent to the Ernakulam regional transport officer (RTO), in Nov 2024, seeking a rescheduling of private bus timings. However, no action has been taken yet. The report also raised specific concern over the safety risks posed by low-capacity electric scooters. It pointed out that electric scooters are currently exempt from registration and do not require a valid driving license to operate. This allows underage students to ride these vehicles. Furthermore, the law does not mandate helmet use for such scooters, creating a significant safety gap. The recent tragic death of a college student in a road accident near Ernakulam Town Hall underscored the urgency of addressing this regulatory shortcoming, the report stated. The accident occurred when a private bus rear-ended the electric scooter the student was riding. The report further stated that city police has significantly enhanced its surveillance under the integrated traffic management system. This includes the deployment of 39 PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras, 44 violation-detection cameras, 19 ANPR (automatic number-plate recognition) cameras, and 13 RLVD (red light violation detection) cameras. The public can also report traffic violations via the 'Traffic Eye' WhatsApp helpline (6328 100 100). Between April 1 and June 30, a total of 1,24,417 petty cases were registered in the city, including 655 cases of rash and negligent driving. A total of Rs 1.37 crore was also collected in fines.
