Soccer-England itching to get back on pitch at Euro 2025, Stanway says
ZURICH (Reuters) -England midfielder Georgia Stanway said the time for talking was over and their game against the Netherlands on Wednesday could not come soon enough for the defending European champions.
England face the Dutch in a must-win game at the Women's Euros after their shock 2-1 loss to France on Saturday, and the 26-year-old said she and her teammates were itching to get back on the pitch to put things right.
"We want to stop talking. Hence why I didn't want to do the press conference today, because I'm fed up with talking now, it's time that we focus and we want to put things on the grass," Stanway said at a press conference at England's base camp on Monday.
"We want to make sure that we put things right on the pitch, we want to create action from what happened on Saturday, and the only way to do that is in the game on Wednesday. And yeah, I think we're all just dying for the game to come around as fast as possible."
If England lose on Wednesday, their only chance of reaching the knockout round is if France lose to Wales.
One thing they have taken from all the talking since Saturday is that they need to get back to being "proper England".
"We want to go back to what we're good at, traditional style of football in terms of total tackles, getting back down to the roots and remembering why we're here, remembering playing for the little girl that wanted to be here," Stanway said.
England's midfield was one of their weaknesses against France, and the Bayern Munich midfielder was particularly disappointed with her own performance on Saturday. A friend put it in perspective.
"I had a message from somebody, and it was: 'It's just like a bad night out, and you want to forget it as much as possible,'" she said, to laughter from journalists.
Stanway had knee surgery in January and there were questions about whether she would be fit for the Euros, but she sees the enforced break from playing as a blessing in disguise.
"It was the first time I'd missed games for 10 years, it's my first injury in 10 years," she said. "I've done many rehab sessions, many sessions to get fitter, faster, stronger.
"That's the time when you're able to work on things in the gym that you haven't had time to work on before. I've got test results now that I've not seen in the last two years, because they've never been that good before."
Lauren Hemp, Alex Greenwood and Lauren James also recently returned to the squad after lengthy injury layoffs.

Rugby-Relief for Wales as win over Japan brings losing streak to an end
(Reuters) -Welsh relief greeted the end of their record losing streak when Saturday's 31-22 victory over Japan spared them the ignominy of going down as the worst side in test rugby. Wales held on for a narrow and nervy triumph in Kobe to level the two-test series and finally post a win after a streak of 18 successive defeats. Again they had a handy halftime lead over their Japanese hosts but, unlike in last week's first loss in Kitakyushu, this time they managed to hold on and claim success. "We were braver than last week. Last week we got in front and we probably tried to hold on to a lead,' said Wales interim head coach Matt Sherratt, who was in tears at the end of the encounter. "When you have not won a game for a period of time, you start to get edgy, so the messaging this week was to be braver.' Wales captain Dewi Lake added: "It wasn't pretty but it's an important landmark for us today, to get that first win back on the board." Had Wales lost they would have set a record losing streak for a Tier One side, surpassing the sequence of France between 1911 and 1920. Saturday's win was their first test victory in 644 days, since beating Georgia in Nantes in the last of their group matches at the 2023 World Cup in France. The losing run has seen Wales slip to a low of 12th in the World Rugby rankings. Sherratt thanked long-suffering fans, adding: 'Even during the Six Nations, I know it's been a hard time to support Wales.I hope you can enjoy tonight because we are certainly going to enjoy the next 24 hours. 'It's emotional, there's a reason why I've done it again. I'm so pleased for the lads.' Englishman Sherratt , who is the Cardiff coach, agreed to stay on for the two matches in Japan after taking over on a caretaker basis during the Six Nations when Warren Gatland left. Wales will now turn to appointing a permanent coach as they look to the November internationals when they host Argentina, Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa at the Principality Stadium in back-to-back matches. Football-Wildfire smoke forces postponement of Canadian Football League game
(Reuters) -A Canadian Football League game between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Calgary Stampeders in Regina on Friday was rescheduled after a long delay due to poor air quality caused by heavy smoke from wildfires. The announcement that the game had been rescheduled to Saturday was made more than three-and-a-half hours after the scheduled kick-off time. "(The air) was going to clear right around game time or right before game time," Roughriders CEO Craig Reynolds told reporters. Scores of wildfires have been burning across Canada since the start of May, including dozens in northern Saskatchewan. "The wind just died. It just died," Reynolds said. "And so as a result, that smoke plume just sat there." Smoke from wildfires could cause disruptions when North America hosts the soccer World Cup next year. In January, Los Angeles wildfires forced the relocation or cancellation of numerous sports events, including an NFL Wild Card playoff game between the Rams and Minnesota Viking that was moved from L.A. to Glendale, Arizona. Motorcycling-Marquez takes seventh pole of season in wet German GP qualifying session
(Reuters) -Ducati's Marc Marquez clinched his seventh pole position of the season at the German Grand Prix in a wet qualifying session at the Sachsenring where several riders crashed in slippery conditions on Saturday. While most riders struggled for grip on the wet surface and in the spray, it was the two veterans Marquez and LCR Honda's Johann Zarco who mastered the conditions in a shootout for pole. Both Maverick Vinales and Jack Miller suffered highside crashes at turn four but Marquez seemed at ease in the conditions, though even the Spaniard had a heart-stopping scare when he briefly slid before regaining control. "I was getting warmer and warmer and then I already had a moment on turn 11 and then when I crossed the finish line on that (one minute and) 28.0 I said, 'Okay, now breathe, calm down, the target is done,' that was the front row," Marquez said. "I thought that was done but then I saw on the screen and on the pit wall that the lap time of the second (best rider) every time was closer and closer. Then I pushed a bit, but because I felt like I was able to do it." Zarco, who had to come through the first qualifying session, had not claimed pole since Silverstone in 2022 and he came close to denying Marquez the 101st pole of his career with a faster time early in his lap but lost time on the final sector. It made no difference, however, as Marquez put in one final lap at the end of the session to clock one minute and 27.811 seconds to go fastest. "Seeing the rain this morning I was thinking, 'Okay, it's a new game, I have my chance'," said Zarco, who claimed victory at a wet French Grand Prix earlier this season. "At the end I did an extra push and I get the second place. It's cool, I expected pole position but Marc also got another fast lap and it's pretty good because yesterday I was not in the top 10 (in practice)." Marco Bezzecchi was third fastest and will start on the front row for the first time with Aprilia. VR46 Racing's Franco Morbidelli was fourth fastest and is joined on the second row by KTM's Pedro Acosta and Gresini Racing's Alex Marquez, who is second in the championship. The younger Marquez sibling was medically cleared to race this weekend after a hand fracture at the Dutch Grand Prix two weeks ago which required surgery.
