Zelenskyy will meet with members of the Calgary branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress along with others from across Canada on Tuesday to discuss the latest developments in the war against Russia. He'll be white-hatted and will receive a large ostrich egg that's been painted by a Calgary woman, in addition to a book about Ukrainian pioneers in Canada. A large electronic billboard near the Calgary International Airport is in place welcoming Zelenskky to Alberta -- and reminding other world leaders to keep Ukraine at the top of mind, says Roman Yosyfiv, the president of the Calgary branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. 'We want to say thank you (to Zelenskyy),' said Yosyfiv, 'and we hope he will say 'thank you' too, for all Canada has done and continues to do (for Ukrainian people.' 'The message for Zelenskyy is we stand together with you.' Roman Yosyfiv Roman Yosyfiv is the president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Calgary branch. (CTV Calgary) Yosyfiv added that billboard is not just for Ukrainians, either. 'Different nationalities – like I talk to people from Belarus, all different nationalities – when we have those rallies, people come over and they show us respect. 'So really this billboard is for everyone – not just for Ukrainians, not just for the president or the leaders – it's for everyone. 'I know the Ukrainian problem is in the ears of everyone and we want to continue to have this attention to Ukraine so the leaders can see this and then they can get together and stand together for Ukraine.' Canadians urged to 'avoid all travel' to Israel amid air, missile strikes with Iran
The federal government is urging Canadians to "avoid all travel" to Israel as the country exchanges missile and air strikes with Iran. The Canadian government says it issued the warning because of Israel's "ongoing hostilities" with Iran. Meanwhile, Canada's foreign affairs minister has asked Canadians in the Middle East in need of emergency assistance to contact the Department of Global Affairs. Anita Anand's social media post this morning comes after she condemned Iran's attack on Israel and called for restraint from both countries. In an interview with CBC's The House on Friday, she said Canada "always prefers negotiated solutions, and we encourage parties to get to the table." On Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney called for Israel and Iran to exercise "maximum restraint" and move toward a diplomatic solution on Friday, while criticizing Iran's missile strikes on Israel and affirming Israel's right to defend itself. "Iran's nuclear program has long been a cause of grave concern, and its missile attacks across Israel threaten regional peace," Carney said. Carney convened the National Security Council, a cabinet committee, on Friday "to ensure that all necessary steps will be taken to protect our nationals and our diplomatic missions in the region," he said. "Canada reaffirms Israel's right to defend itself and to ensure its security. We call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and move towards a diplomatic resolution." Israel's defence minister warned Saturday that "Tehran will burn" if Iran continues firing missiles. The two countries traded blows after Israel launched a blistering surprise attack Friday on Iranian nuclear and military sites, killing several top generals.

Four universities call for measures to attract foreign researchers
The McGill University campus on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, in Montreal. (The Canadian Press/Ryan Remiorz) Four Quebec universities are calling on the Quebec and Canadian governments to implement measures to attract foreign researchers in a 'global context marked by geopolitical instability.' Laval University, McGill University, the University of Montreal and the University of Sherbrooke stated in a press release issued on Saturday morning that at a time when 'political and social tensions are weakening the global research ecosystem,' Quebec and Canada have an opportunity to position themselves as a welcoming place for research. 'We are calling on governments to take swift action to seize the opportunities that this context of instability may bring for the benefit of Quebec and Canada. Other countries, particularly in Europe, have already invested significant resources in their universities to attract talent from around the world,' said Eugénie Brouillet, vice-rector of Research, Creation and Innovation at Laval University, in the same document. The four universities have released proposals that include a Quebec component and a federal component. The educational institutions suggest first creating new research chairs in strategic sectors, such as artificial intelligence, health and biodiversity, as well as offering targeted scholarships to recruit talented doctoral and postdoctoral students. The universities also propose supporting early-career researchers and investing in modern research infrastructure. 'Although some proposals target researchers based in the U.S., particularly Quebecers and Canadians pursuing careers there, the initiatives aim to attract talent from around the world, offering them a space of freedom of thought, scientific rigour, innovation and unparalleled creativity to advance their research,' the press release states. Since taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced significant cuts in various fields of research, including health. This report by The Canadian Press was first published in French June 14, 2025.
