Morecambe embargo lifted and first game to go ahead
Morecambe have confirmed their National League game against Altrincham will go ahead on Saturday and that they are now able to sign players. The Shrimps were forced to postpone their opening three games of the campaign after being suspended by the league for failing to comply with its rules. The future looked uncertain for the Lancashire club but their protracted takeover by the Panjab Warriors consortium was finally completed on Sunday. Derek Adams was sacked as manager on Monday and replaced with Ashvir Singh Johal, the first Sikh to manage professionally in England, on Tuesday. The club then confirmed on Wednesday that the National League had officially lifted their transfer embargo. The league had previously said the embargo would remain in place until all football creditors, including players, staff and HM Revenue & Customs, had been paid. "With new ownership steering the club into a new era, optimism is building both on and off the pitch," Morecambe said in a statement. "Fans can expect an electric atmosphere as the Shrimps look to make an early statement and set the tone for the season ahead. "This is more than just the first game of the season, it's the start of something special. We want to build a team and a club the town can be proud of, and we're calling on our supporters to come out in force and be part of this journey from day one." On Monday, the BBC understood Morecambe had just five players under contract. Saturday's opponents Altrincham have won one and lost two of their three league games so far this campaign.

Dodgers notes: Alex Call, Mookie Betts, Teoscar Hernández
The Dodgers weren't as active at the trade deadline as they had been in years past, and the early results weren't inspiring to say the least. Brock Stewart's reunion has lasted just four appearances, suffering a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Aug. 4 before being placed on the 15-day IL due to right shoulder inflammation. Alex Call, whom the Dodgers received from the Washington Nationals at the deadline, was hitting just .174 as a with his new team across 28 plate appearances entering Tuesday. He showed why the Dodgers had such high interest in him on Tuesday, as he finished a triple shy of the cycle while collecting four hits in the Dodgers' 11-4 win over the Colorado Rockies. Call spoke with Kirsten Watson of SportsNet LA about his four-hit performance— the second of his career— and the mindset he had during his final two at-bats, where his chances at a cycle were in jeopardy. 'I was just trying to get on base. It's tough when everybody else is yelling 'If you hit the ball, you better not stop running.' It's a special thing to even be in that situation. I didn't do it tonight, but maybe, in the future.' The most glaring issue for the Dodgers during Monday's defeat to Colorado was their outfield defense, as a misplayed pop up by Teoscar Hernández in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the eventual game-winning run to reach scoring position. While Hernández has a respectable .990 fielding percentage, second among qualified right fielders this year, his -9 outs above average rank in the first percentile, ranking third to last among all qualified right fielders. His -9 fielding run value and -3 defensive runs saves also rank third to last among all qualified right fielders. The topic of Mookie Betts moving back to right field to aid a struggling defense wasn't included in Dave Roberts' meeting with the Dodger shortstop, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, and Hernández will continue to patrol right field. 'We have not talked about right field at all,' Roberts said. 'He was saying a lot of things when he was mired in his struggles that I didn't want to hear, so I don't know. He might have. But no, we haven't talked about it.' Hernández's defense did improve in Tuesday's win, and as Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times notes, Dave Roberts is confident in Hernández's defensive capabilities in right field. 'There's been times that he's played a formidable right field,' he said. 'I think he's going to get back to that. I really do.'

Dave Roberts 'Not There Yet' With Considering Position Change for Mookie Betts
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Dave Roberts is publicly addressing the speculation after Mookie Betts walked into his office. The veteran star was the hero of Sunday's win with a late home run to sweep the San Diego Padres, and he admitted it felt good to finally contribute. The conversation, though, shifted to questions about whether Betts would move to right field like he did last year after starting as the team's shortstop. Roberts shut down those thoughts -- at least for now. DENVER, CO - AUGUST 18: Mookie Betts #50 of the Los Angeles Dodgers throws to first for an out in the third inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on August 18, 2025 in... DENVER, CO - AUGUST 18: Mookie Betts #50 of the Los Angeles Dodgers throws to first for an out in the third inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on August 18, 2025 in Denver, Colorado. More"I think that's a fair question," Roberts told Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. "But I don't think we're there yet." While the Dodgers aren't in a position to try experimenting, Betts also hasn't done anything wrong to justify a move to the outfield. According to FanGraphs, he has a 10 Defensive Runs Saved and 2 Outs Above Average this season at shortstop. Both numbers are above average to well above average. The Dodgers are also razor thin right now in terms of infielders available. Hyeseong Kim and Kike Hernandez are both on the injured list for Los Angeles, which leaves Roberts with very little flexibility for his lineup decisions on a nightly basis. Roberts also didn't completely rule out a move to right field for Betts as he knows the veteran is willing to play where he needs to be to make the team better. Seeing it work last year en route to a World Series win will make Betts even more likely to consider it if the idea is pondered. As of now, though, Betts is the everyday shortstop for the Dodgers, and it sounds like won't change any time soon. More MLB: Blue Jays Receive Promising Injury Update on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
