Malaysia to Host ASEAN Human Rights Consultations to Advance Right to Development
PUTRAJAYA, April 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will host two regional consultations on human rights this week to strengthen ASEAN's commitment to a people-centred and inclusive agenda.
The Foreign Ministry in a statement Sunday said the consultations, lead by Malaysia's Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Edmund Bon Tai Soon, will take place on April 28 and 29.
The first consultation, the 2nd AICHR Consultation on the Human Right to Development to Enhance the ASEAN Community, to be held on April 28, will focus on realising Article 35 of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration 2012, which reaffirms the right to development as a fundamental human right for all ASEAN citizens.

Subsequently, Malaysia will also host the AICHR Regional Consultation to Support the Development of the AICHR Five-Year Work Plan (2026–2030) on April 29, in which this new plan will align with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and the Strategic Plans of Action.
'These consultations are part of Malaysia's initiatives in the leadership of ASEAN this year and underscore AICHR's commitment to shaping a people-centred, people-oriented and forward-looking human rights agenda,' said the statement.
The ministry added these consultations form part of Malaysia's broader initiatives in ASEAN this year, which carries the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' and underscore the regional body's efforts to advance inclusive, sustainable, and gender-responsive programmes.
These efforts aim to reduce poverty, protect human and environmental rights, and narrow development gaps across the region.
The consultations will further deliberate on Malaysia's proposal for an ASEAN Declaration on Promoting the Right to Development and Peace Towards Realising Inclusive and Sustainable Development.
The proposal promotes an ASEAN-led, ASEAN-owned, whole-of-ASEAN approach to human rights, ensuring the right to development is not sidelined but championed at the highest level, the ministry added.

This theme also aligns with the MADANI government's efforts to empower youths through various strategic initiatives as well as the values of confidence within the MADANI framework,' it added. With the targeted presence of 4 million visitors, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), through the National Youth and Sports Department (JBSN), has activated the HBN celebration at the grassroots level by implementing the Semarak HBN initiative in 113 districts nationwide since May 15. At the national level, the Semarak HBN initiative has been further enlivened by the inclusion of the National Youth Convention; eSports games and activities; career and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) carnivals; as well as programmes on fitness, leadership, arts, music and culture and awareness of mental health and cyberbullying. Hajiji, who is also the Chief Minister, said GRS has conducted a series of training sessions across constituencies and state assembly areas to strengthen the coalition's election machinery ahead of the polls. 'Clearly, GRS is ready. We have established our election machinery and conducted several rounds of training in preparation. 'However, discussions on seat allocations have yet to take place,' he told reporters after officiating the Aidiladha sacrificial ritual at the Tuaran District Police Headquarters today. Also present were Sabah Minister of Rural Development, Datuk Jahid Jahim; Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai; and Tuaran Police Chief, Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin. The Sabah Legislative Assembly will automatically dissolve on Nov 11, ending the five-year term that began with its official opening by Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin on Nov 12, 2020, paving the way for the 17th state election. Commenting on the cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN) for the upcoming election, Hajiji said GRS remains open to discussions with the party's leaders. 'The last time I met the BN chairman (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) was before the fasting month. While political matters were discussed, there have been no further talks on collaboration or related issues since then. 'There is no issue with meeting; I have great respect for all friends, especially the BN chairman, and we are very open on this matter,' he said. Deepening Cambodian Muslim bonds on Aidil Adha
PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet lauded the country's minority Muslim community for their contribution to nation-building. In his special greetings to the Muslims on the occasion of Aidil Adha, the prime minister emphasised their invaluable contribution in fostering racial harmony across the Kingdom. "On behalf of the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia, my wife (Pich Chanmony) and I congratulate and wish success, happiness and prosperity to all our Muslim brothers and sisters in Cambodia and abroad, as well as Muslim brothers and sisters around the world, happily welcoming the Hari Raya Haji. "And thanks to our Cambodian Muslim brothers and sisters who have participated in maintaining the peace with Cambodian citizens with religious and ethnic harmony in accordance with the policies of the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia,' Manet said in his Facebook Posting Saturday (June 7). About 800,000 Cambodian Muslims joined the global Muslim community in celebrating Aidil Adha on Saturday.
