Centre plans 51 cruise circuits across 14 states, 3 UTs by 2027ETInfra
The Union government has planned 51 new cruise circuits across 14 states and three Union Territories by 2027 under the Cruise Bharat Mission, an official statement said on Monday. Viking Cruises has announced its entry into India's river cruise market with Viking Brahmaputra, an 80-guest vessel scheduled to begin operations in late 2027, signalling heightened interest and investment in India's river cruise tourism sector, it added.Viking Brahmaputra, to be indigenously developed by Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kolkata, will operate on National Waterway-2 , the statement said.The river cruise tourism sector in India has witnessed notable growth, with the number of river cruise voyages on National Waterways increasing from 371 in 2023-24 to 443 in 2024-25.This 19.4 per cent growth underscores the rising appeal and operational efficiency of river cruises in India's inland waterways, it said.From just five vessels on three waterways in 2013-14, river cruise operations have expanded to 25 vessels across 13 national waterways in 2024-25.The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is developing dedicated cruise terminals on the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers, with three cruise terminals planned in Varanasi , Guwahati, Kolkata, and Patna.In the northeast, four more cruise terminals at Silghat, Biswanath Ghat, Neamati, and Guijan are proposed to be developed by 2027.

1,240 National Highway Projects Worth Rs 7.8 Lakh Crore Underway: Nitin Gadkari
New Delhi: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said 1,240 national highways projects in 29,406 km, costing Rs 7.80 lakh crore, are currently under construction in the country, of which 15,674 km have been completed. These projects are under various stages of construction and are scheduled for completion in a phased manner by the financial year 2028-29, Gadkari said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha. The ministry of road transport and highways is primarily responsible for the development and maintenance of National Highways (NHs) and Expressways. Responding to a separate question, the minister said that during the current Financial Year 2025-26, the government has prepared the annual plan for the development of about 19,555 km of NHs, including about 548 km in the State of West Bengal. He also said a total of 4,557 electric vehicle Public Charging Stations (PCSs) have been installed on the State/National Highways and Expressways in the country. The minister said the government has prioritised the maintenance of the existing national highways network and has evolved a mechanism to ensure maintenance and repair (M&R), including timely repair of potholes on all NHs, through accountable maintenance agencies. NHs' development projects are executed mainly in three modes-- Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT), Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) and Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC). Concession period, including maintenance for projects on Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT), is 15 to 20 years, and on Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) is generally 15 years. The Concessionaire is responsible for the maintenance of the respective NH stretches within the concession period of the project. Only in the case of EPC projects, the Defect Liability period (DLP) is 5 years for the bituminous pavement works and 10 years for concrete pavement works.

CM: TN has double digit growth of 11.19%
Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin said TN has become the fastest growing state in the country overcoming multiple challenges. Citing a Union ministry of statistics report, Stalin said on Wednesday that TN's economic growth rate has touched 11.19%, surging past the previous estimate of 9.69%. State has achieved the double digit growth rate after 14 years, he said after distributing appointment orders to youth recruited by state municipal administration department. "We have reached the milestone after crossing multiple hurdles and slander," Stalin said. Raisin producers, traders protest against imports as prices fall in Sangli market
Kolhapur: Hundreds of raisin producers, traders and cold storage operators marched to the Sangli collector's office on Wednesday, demanding that central govt stop import of raisins into India, both legally and illegally. Prices of raisins in the Sangli-Tasgaon Bedana Market, the largest raisin market in India, have dropped steeply over the past few months. Raisin prices, which ranged between Rs 300-400 per kg, fell below Rs200. Raisin production witnessed a steep decline this year due to significant damage to vineyards and fewer grapes available for raisin production. Raisin producers approached deputy chief minister and state finance minister Ajit Pawar with their concerns. Pawar wrote to Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal seeking immediate intervention since raisin production is a capital-intensive industry and the losses have become unbearable for everyone in the chain. "Huge amounts of raisins from China are being brought into India through the illegal route of Nepal. Also, raisins from other countries are packaged as Afghan raisins and brought to India. The Afghan raisins have no duty due to a trade agreement. Several big Indian players are bringing the raisins, showing procurement prices much lower than the domestic price of raisins. They should be punished," said Rajendra Kumbhar, the president of the Raisin Traders' Association. Several farmers from Solapur and Karnataka's border areas participated in the protest march. "I produce around 15 tonne of raisins every year. Due to the import of raisins and the drop in prices, I have suffered a loss of Rs 15 lakh," said a farmer. The raisins produced in Sangli and nearby areas are of the best quality and have high demand across India. The demand shoots up during festivals, which are about to start soon. Before the start of the festivals, the centre should crack down on the illegal imports, said the farmers.
