Residential hostel contract workers plan protest on June 13
Demanding that the State government facilitate payment to contract workers at government hostels through cooperative sanghas and also urging for revision of wages and regularisation of their service, the district unit of the Karnataka Rajya Sarakari Hostel Mattu Vasati Shala Horaguttige Naukarara Sangha will stage a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner's office here on June 13.
State president of the sangha Bheemshetty Yempalli, addressing presspersons here on Monday, demanded that the system of recruiting contract workers through manpower agencies should be stopped and instead, the government should recruit workers through cooperative sanghas.
The indefinite protest in January was withdrawn after a meeting with Labour Minister Santosh Lad who then agreed to constitute cooperative sanghas for releasing payment of contract workers.
Mr. Yempalli also urged the State government to regularise the service of contract workers and revise their honorarium to ₹25,714 per month.
He said that though the Mysuru-based Sharp (Swiss) manpower agency has been blacklisted by the Revenue Department, the same agency continues to operate in Kalaburagi district for recruiting workers.
The issue has been brought to the notice of the district in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge and Deputy Commissioner Fauzia Tarannum several times, but in vain, Mr. Yempalli said.

Bharat Bhushan Ashu responds to Arvind Kejriwal and defends his record as opposition MLA in Punjab.
Ludhiana: Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu has launched a fierce counterattack against (AAP) supremo, , accusing him of disrespecting Punjab and its people in the lead-up to the Ludhiana West byelection. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ashu, addressing supporters and the media on Wednesday, dismissed Kejriwal's recent claim — that only a govering party MLA can deliver development — as "undemocratic" and "an insult to the spirit of Punjab". He argued that Kejriwal's remarks revealed a lack of faith in democracy and an intent to sideline opposition voices. "What is Kejriwal's authority to say I can't do anything for Ludhiana West? This only proves what everyone in Punjab knows: the state govt is being run directly from Delhi," Ashu said. The Congress nominee further alleged that Kejriwal and the AAP leadership treated Punjabi leaders and workers as "second-class citizens", and that the real fight was to restore Punjab's honour and autonomy. "My fight is against Kejriwal and for redeeming the dignity of Punjab, Punjabis, and Punjabiyat," Ashu declared, adding that even AAP insiders are frustrated by the growing influence of Delhi-based leaders over Punjab's affairs. Ashu also challenged Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann to a public debate on corruption, pointing out that he had been exonerated by the courts while senior AAP leaders, including Kejriwal's close aides, still face serious corruption charges. He called the AAP's accusations against him "a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black", and accused the govt of presiding over record levels of corruption in Punjab. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Expressing confidence ahead of the vote, Ashu predicted a decisive Congress victory and warned AAP leaders and govt officials against "misusing their positions." He said, "Nothing is hidden. Nothing is forgotten. Nothing is forgiven… Congress will win, and what awaits you after that will be your own responsibility." The Ludhiana West seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. The byelection is set for June 19, with results to be declared on June 23. MSID:: 121775080 413 |

'Cutting red tape in India key to Swiss investments': Helene Budliger Artieda
Bern: A good regulatory framework and cut in red tape in India is important to attract Swiss investments, Switzerland's state secretary for economic affairs Helene Budliger Artieda has said. She also ruled out any impact of the withdrawal of most favoured nation treatment for India by Switzerland under the bilateral tax treaty on investment flows under the trade agreement with European Free Trade Association (EFTA). "We need to have the best framework conditions (for the $100 billion commitment on investment) and this was part of the business roundtable meeting in the presence of minister Goyal. It will be important that red tape be cut as much as possible," she said. Even in Switzerland, companies complain about too much red tape, she added. "It will be very important that India creates a good framework for Swiss investments to come in," she told reporters after her meeting with commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday. Live Events India and the EFTA, which includes Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, signed a free trade agreement on March 10, 2024, which is expected to come into force in a few months. It provides for an investment commitment of $100 billion in 15 years from the grouping in lieu of customs duty concessions. Goyal is on a four-day visit to Switzerland and Sweden. On the issue of the Swiss government suspending the MFN clause in the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) between India and Switzerland, Artieda said there has been some misunderstanding on this. "I think it's important to know that both India and Switzerland share a double taxation treaty and that treaty is valid and that means there will not be any issue," she said. In a statement in December 2024, the Swiss government announced the suspension of the MFN clause in the DTAA between India and Switzerland, potentially impacting Swiss investments in India and leading to higher taxes on Indian companies operating in the European nation. She noted that the trade agreement will help increase exports of Swiss watches and chocolates to India as companies will have the advantage of preferred access. New Delhi is also in talks with the European Union for a comprehensive free trade agreement. (The correspondent is in Switzerland at the invitation of the ministry of commerce and industry.)

Belagavi: A three-day mega exhibition titled 'Vision Karnataka 2025', showcasing central govt schemes and development initiatives, was inaugurated on Wednesday by Belagavi MP Jagadish Shettar at the KLE Centenary Convention Centre. The opening day attracted more than 5,000 students and the public. "I will meet defence minister Rajnath Singh to request the allocation of this unused land," Shettar said. Belagavi (South) MLA Abhay Patil and former Rajya Sabha member Prabhakar Kore hailed the exhibition as a 'knowledge fair,' urging students to take full advantage of the rare opportunity to learn about national development efforts.
