Residential hostel contract workers plan protest on June 13

The Hindu4 hours ago

Demanding that the State government facilitate payment to contract workers at government hostels through cooperative sanghas and also urging for revision of wages and regularisation of their service, the district unit of the Karnataka Rajya Sarakari Hostel Mattu Vasati Shala Horaguttige Naukarara Sangha will stage a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner's office here on June 13.
State president of the sangha Bheemshetty Yempalli, addressing presspersons here on Monday, demanded that the system of recruiting contract workers through manpower agencies should be stopped and instead, the government should recruit workers through cooperative sanghas.
The indefinite protest in January was withdrawn after a meeting with Labour Minister Santosh Lad who then agreed to constitute cooperative sanghas for releasing payment of contract workers.
Mr. Yempalli also urged the State government to regularise the service of contract workers and revise their honorarium to ₹25,714 per month.
He said that though the Mysuru-based Sharp (Swiss) manpower agency has been blacklisted by the Revenue Department, the same agency continues to operate in Kalaburagi district for recruiting workers.
The issue has been brought to the notice of the district in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge and Deputy Commissioner Fauzia Tarannum several times, but in vain, Mr. Yempalli said.

NGT lists Kukrail night safari case for next hearing on Aug 21

LUCKNOW The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has granted the UP government four weeks to respond to a case regarding the proposed relocation of Lucknow Zoo to Kukrail and the construction of a night safari in the same area. The tribunal has listed the case for next hearing on August 21. Seeking to remove roadblocks in the ambitious Kukrail night safari project, the UP government had filed an impleadment application in the Supreme Court on April 8, seeking permission to establish the safari and relocate the Lucknow zoo to the Kukrail forest area. The plea is yet to come up for hearing. Lucknow-based social activist Alok Singh filed this case in the NGT. He raised concerns over the night safari project at the Kukrail reserve forest, for which around 1500 trees were proposed to be felled. He also moved the SC on April 11, 2025, on this issue. The Supreme Court has given July 15 as the tentative date for next hearing of the case. A detailed project report (DPR) of the night safari, coming up on a 900-acre maple leaf design in the 2027.46-hectare Kukrail forest, was presented before chief minister Yogi Adityanath on November 19, 2024, roughly two years after its digital survey in December 2022. However, the project got stuck due to the apex court's February 19, 2024 order restraining the central and state governments across the country to establish zoos and safaris in forest areas (other than protected areas) without approval of the top court. This order was passed by a three-judge bench headed by former CJI Justice Dhananjay Y Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra.

India-EFTA Trade Pact Likely To Be Implemented From September, Says Piyush Goyal

Last Updated: India and EFTA countries - Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland - signed Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) in March last year. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday said the free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the four-nation European bloc EFTA is likely to come into force from September. On March 10, 2024, the two sides signed the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). As part of the deal, India secured an investment commitment of $100 billion over 15 years from the bloc, while agreeing to lower or eliminate duties on various products, including Swiss watches, chocolates, and cut and polished diamonds. The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) members are Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Once the trade pact is implemented, several products such as Swiss watches, Swiss chocolates, biscuits and cut and polished diamonds will come from four European countries at lower or zero duties. Goyal said the agreement has received approval from the Parliaments of all four countries. In Switzerland, there is an objection period open until July 10 as July and August are holiday months there. He made the announcement during an official visit to Switzerland to promote trade and investment between the two countries. India had promised to reduce tariffs to zero on 80-85% of goods from EFTA countries. On the other hand, the four European countries have agreed to allow duty-free market access for almost 99% Indian goods, including rice. What Is EFTA? Formed in 1960, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is an intergovernmental organisation. It was established as an alternative trade bloc for those European states that were unable or unwilling to join the European Union (EU). The four countries – Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland – are not part of the EU but have access to its single market through various agreements. India's exports to EFTA countries during 2022-23 stood at $1.92 billion, while imports were at $16.74 billion during the last fiscal. The bilateral trade between India and EFTA stood at $18.65 billion in 2022-23, compared with $27.23 billion in 2021-22. Switzerland is the largest trading partner of India followed by Norway.
