Ashu, addressing supporters and the media on Wednesday, dismissed Kejriwal's recent claim — that only a govering party MLA can deliver development — as "undemocratic" and "an insult to the spirit of Punjab". He argued that Kejriwal's remarks revealed a lack of faith in democracy and an intent to sideline opposition voices. "What is Kejriwal's authority to say I can't do anything for Ludhiana West? This only proves what everyone in Punjab knows: the state govt is being run directly from Delhi," Ashu said.
The Congress nominee further alleged that Kejriwal and the AAP leadership treated Punjabi leaders and workers as "second-class citizens", and that the real fight was to restore Punjab's honour and autonomy. "My fight is against Kejriwal and for redeeming the dignity of Punjab, Punjabis, and Punjabiyat," Ashu declared, adding that even AAP insiders are frustrated by the growing influence of Delhi-based leaders over Punjab's affairs.
Ashu also challenged Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann to a public debate on corruption, pointing out that he had been exonerated by the courts while senior AAP leaders, including Kejriwal's close aides, still face serious corruption charges. He called the AAP's accusations against him "a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black", and accused the govt of presiding over record levels of corruption in Punjab.

Expressing confidence ahead of the vote, Ashu predicted a decisive Congress victory and warned AAP leaders and govt officials against "misusing their positions." He said, "Nothing is hidden. Nothing is forgotten. Nothing is forgiven… Congress will win, and what awaits you after that will be your own responsibility."
The Ludhiana West seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. The byelection is set for June 19, with results to be declared on June 23.

Why Google and Latin America's largest airline LATAM are fighting a court battle over a YouTube video

Alphabet's Google has reportedly launched a legal battle against Chile-based LATAM Airlines in a U.S. federal court in San Jose, California, seeking to block Brazilian courts from forcing the removal of a YouTube video in the United States. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The video, which alleges that a LATAM employee sexually abused a child, has sparked a heated dispute over jurisdictional reach, Reuters reported. Google's lawsuit argues that LATAM is attempting to bypass U.S. constitutional protections for free speech by leveraging Brazilian courts to demand the video's global removal. "LATAM is trying to sidestep U.S. law," the filing stated, accusing the airline of overreaching its authority. LATAM Airlines did not immediately respond to Reuters' inquiries regarding Google's claims. Jose Castaneda, a Google spokesperson, emphasized the company's stance, stating, "Google has consistently upheld the principle that a country's courts can govern content within its borders but should not dictate what is accessible in other nations." What is the Google vs LATAM case about At the heart of the current dispute is a 2018 YouTube video uploaded by Raymond Moreira, a Florida resident and U.S. citizen. The video features his 6-year-old son describing alleged sexual abuse by a LATAM employee during a trip as an unaccompanied minor. In 2020, Moreira sued LATAM in Florida over the incident, reaching a confidential settlement. LATAM responded by filing a lawsuit in Brazil in 2018, seeking to compel Google, YouTube's parent company, to remove the video. Brazil's highest court is set to decide next week whether it can mandate a worldwide takedown. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Google's Thursday filing in California asks the court to affirm that LATAM cannot enforce such a removal in the U.S. What Google vs LATAM case shows The case mirrors a February lawsuit in Florida, where Trump Media and Rumble, two right-wing social media platforms, challenged a Brazilian judge's order to delete U.S.-based accounts linked to a supporter of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. A federal judge in that case ruled that the platforms were not required to comply with the Brazilian directive in the U.S. This case highlights ongoing tensions over global content regulation. In a similar 2018 case, Canada's Supreme Court ordered Google to remove certain search results worldwide, but a California judge blocked its enforcement in the U.S. in 2017, underscoring the challenges of reconciling national laws with global digital platforms.

Support SAD to foster peace, devp in Punjab: Sukhbir

Ludhiana: (SAD) president on Thursday urged people of Ludhiana West to strengthen the regional party and pave the way for overall development, peace and communal harmony in Punjab. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Campaigning for party candidate Parupkar Singh Ghumman, Sukhbir Badal said, "Only a regional party can fulfil the aspirations of Punjabis and resolve pending issues, besides providing people-centric governance. Parties from Delhi only seek to exploit Punjab." On the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress governments, Badal said, "These governments acted like the erstwhile East India Company. They both looted Punjab to fill coffers of their Delhi leadership. The Ludhiana West bypoll has given an opportunity to take the AAP government to task and begin its countdown," He added that Punjab had never suffered as much as it had under AAP rule. "The law and order situation is such that industrialists are opting to invest in other states now. Extortions and targeted killings have become the norm. AAP legislators are working in collusion with the drug mafia, due to which drug trafficking and drug overdose deaths are only increasing," Sukbir rued. Drawing a comparison with the SAD governance, he said, "Our guiding philosophy is 'sarbat da bhala'. We value and respect each community. People of all communities always felt that the late Parkash Singh Badal was one of them. Such was the confidence all communities had in the former CM and the SAD." Sukhbir also spoke about SAD's track record of development. "Look around you. All development projects, be it thermal plants, airports, or expressways - all came up during SAD governments. The same is the case with all major infrastructure works in Ludhiana, be it the elevated road or the Southern Bypass." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He also urged people to distinguish between all candidates in the fray before exercising their franchise. "Parupkar Ghumman is a leading advocate who is known for several social initiatives. He is most deserving of your votes. In stark contrast, AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora is based in Gurgaon and is only contesting elections to pave the way for Arvind Kejriwal's ascendency to the Rajya Sabha," Badal added. Trump signs measure blocking California's ban on gas-powered car sales

It comes as the Republican president is mired in a clash with California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, over Trump's move to deploy troops to Los Angeles in response to immigration protests AP Washington President Donald Trump signed a resolution on Thursday that blocks California's first-in-the-nation rule banning the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035. The state quickly announced it was challenging the move in court, with California's attorney general holding a news conference to discuss the lawsuit before Trump's signing ceremony ended at the White House. The resolution was approved by Congress last month and aims to quash the country's most aggressive attempt to phase out gas-powered cars. Trump also signed measures to overturn state policies curbing tailpipe emissions in certain vehicles and smog-forming nitrogen oxide pollution from trucks. Trump called California's regulations crazy at a White House ceremony where he signed the resolutions. It's been a disaster for this country, he said. It comes as the Republican president is mired in a clash with California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, over Trump's move to deploy troops to Los Angeles in response to immigration protests. It's the latest in an ongoing battle between the Trump administration and heavily Democratic California over issues including tariffs, the rights of LGBTQ+ youth and funding for electric vehicle chargers. The state is already involved in more than two-dozen lawsuits challenging Trump administration actions, and the state's Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the latest one at a news conference in California. Ten other states, all with Democratic attorneys general, joined the lawsuit filed Thursday. The federal government's actions are not only unlawful; they're irrational and wildly partisan, Bonta said. They come at the direct expense of the health and the well-being of our people. The three resolutions Trump signed will block California's rule phasing out gas-powered cars and end the sale of new ones by 2035. They will also kill rules that phase out the sale of medium- and heavy-duty diesel vehicles and cut tailpipe emissions from trucks. In his remarks at the White House, Trump expressed doubts about the performance and reliability of electric vehicles, though he had some notably positive comments about the company owned by Elon Musk, despite their fractured relationship. I like Tesla, Trump said. In remarks that often meandered away from the subject at hand, Trump used the East Room ceremony to also muse on windmills, which he claimed are killing our country, the prospect of getting electrocuted by an electric-powered boat if it sank and whether he'd risk a shark attack by jumping as the boat went down. I'll take electrocution every single day," the president said. When it comes to cars, Trump said he likes combustion engines but for those that prefer otherwise, If you want to buy electric, you can buy electric. What this does is it gives us freedom, said Bill Kent, the owner of Kent Kwik convenience stores. Kent, speaking at the White House, said that the California rules would have forced him to install infrastructure that frankly, is extremely expensive and doesn't give you any return. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents major car makers, applauded Trump's action. Everyone agreed these EV sales mandates were never achievable and wildly unrealistic, John Bozzella, the group's president and CEO, said in a statement. Newsom, who is considered a likely 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, and California officials contend that what the federal government is doing is illegal and said the state plans to sue. Newsom said Trump's action was a continuation of his all-out assault on California. And this time he's destroying our clean air and America's global competitiveness in the process, Newsom said in a statement. We are suing to stop this latest illegal action by a President who is a wholly-owned subsidiary of big polluters. The signings come as Trump has pledged to revive American auto manufacturing and boost oil and gas drilling. The move follows other steps the Trump administration has taken to roll back rules that aim to protect air and water and reduce emissions that cause climate change. The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday proposed repealing rules that limit greenhouse gas emissions from power plants fueled by coal and natural gas. Dan Becker with the Centre for Biological Diversity, said the signing of the resolutions was Trump's latest betrayal of democracy. Signing this bill is a flagrant abuse of the law to reward Big Oil and Big Auto corporations at the expense of everyday people's health and their wallets, Becker said in a statement. California, which has some of the nation's worst air pollution, has been able to seek waivers for decades from the EPA, allowing it to adopt stricter emissions standards than the federal government. In his first term, Trump revoked California's ability to enforce its standards, but Democratic President Joe Biden reinstated it in 2022. Trump has not yet sought to revoke it again. Republicans have long criticised those waivers and earlier this year opted to use the Congressional Review Act, a law aimed at improving congressional oversight of actions by federal agencies, to try to block the rules. That's despite a finding from the US Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan congressional watchdog, that California's standards cannot legally be blocked using the Congressional Review Act. The Senate parliamentarian agreed with that finding. California, which makes up roughly 11% of the US car market, has significant power to sway trends in the auto industry. About a dozen states signed on to adopt California's rule phasing out the sale of new gas-powered cars.
