
MIT researchers develop hydrogen from sugarcane juice
The project is led by researchers Sagar Kanekar, Bharat Kale, Anand Kulkarni, prof Niraj Topare, Santosh Patil, Dev Thapa, Biswas and Ratnadip Joshi.
As per the information given by the research team, the university has developed a unique process to generate hydrogen from sugarcane juice using microorganisms, which also convert carbon dioxide into acetic acid, making it more sustainable. A patent has already been submitted for this technology. This project proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy (MNRE) for funding.
Dr Bharat Kale, emeritus professor and director of Material Science [COE]s said, 'The university's bioprocess operates at room temperature using sugarcane juice, seawater, and wastewater, contributing to global efforts to reduce hydrogen costs to $1/kg. We are seeking industry partners for lab-scale development and eventual technology transfer.'
'The work on hydrogen storage is also in progress using Metal-Organic Framework (MOF). The MOFs for hydrogen storage and CO2 capture have been focused on intensely. The university aims to support industries in scaling up the technology, which could be commercially viable within a year,' said Sagar Kanekar.

MIT study: 95% GenAI projects fail to show returns
While companies have rushed to adopt AI tools into their work processes, most of these projects haven't made any impact as only 5% of AI pilots showed growth in revenue. A new MIT study, titled 'The GenAI Divide: State of AI in Business 2025,' which surveyed 300 AI deployments and spoke to 350 employees, found that 95% of AI projects showed no returns on investment for the companies. The failure was not because AI models did not work efficiently, but because they were harder to adapt with pre-existing workflows in a company. According to a Fortune report, citing the study's lead researcher, the 5% AI deployments that were successful were focused on solving a single problem and had worked on execution. Companies are also dealing with a 'learning gap' in their workforce although company executives blamed AI model's performance. The study also showed that more than half of GenAI budgets went to sales and marketing but the highest returns were seen in automating back-office processes like cutting external agency costs, and streamlining roles. The report also noted that companies that purchasing AI tools from specialised vendors worked around 67% of the time while internal tools only succeeded one-third of the time.

Many relied on big-name platforms like ChatGPT, but instead of integrating seamlessly, these tools often feel awkward, stalling out and having minimal impact in real business contexts. Custom problems need custom solutions, something many forgot in their race to invest. Warning for the workforce Yet a handful of businesses have found the secret sauce. The study highlights young startups and nimble teams that took a different tack: target one business pain point, solve it with precision, and partner with third-party vendors who know the tools inside and out. For them, the results are silver-lining material, some saw their revenues climb from zero to $20 million in just a year by staying sharply focused and realistic. Notably, two-thirds of successful AI deployments came from third-party vendors, compared to only a third built in-house. On the job front, layoffs due to AI aren't happening yet, but companies are filling fewer support and admin roles as technology steps in. How long this quiet approach can last before real disruption remains a hot question. Experts warn that when (or if) AI masters true contextual work and autonomy, the workforce may not be so safe.

Now, some Wall Street experts worry the same 'unpleasant popping sound' may hit the AI boom. On Tuesday, tech stocks fell sharply after a report from MIT said most AI investments give 'zero return' for businesses. MIT academics wrote: 'Despite $30-40bn in enterprise investment into Generative AI, 95pc of organisations are getting zero return'. Nvidia shares dropped 3.5pc and Palantir fell 9pc after the report. MIT's findings could be the pin that pops the tech stock bubble, which has increased US stock values by trillions. Morgan Stanley also projects AI could add $16tn to the S&P 500 through 40pc salary savings, though MIT's report suggests this may be unrealistic. Meta announced a reorganization of its AI division, including staff reductions, showing even big AI believers are cautious. Mark Zuckerberg has spent hundreds of millions to hire AI engineers at Meta, as per the New York Times the sell-off, the market hasn't collapsed completely; some analysts see it as just a speed bump. Dan Ives, tech analyst at Wedbush Securities, said skeptics of the tech rally will be proven wrong again. Nvidia will report results next week, potentially showing the true state of AI investments in major companies.
