A meeting was convened by MITRA on Wednesday, with participation from CEO Pravin Pardeshi, BEST general manager SVR Srinivas, WRI India representatives, and various transport specialists and analysts.
The discussions included proposals for BEST to utilise private school and corporate buses during their inactive periods for transporting passengers on shorter routes. This arrangement would provide additional income for private operators while helping BEST, whose fleet reached its lowest point in 15 years, to service feeder routes, particularly near railway and Metro stations with continuous passenger flow.
Another proposal discussed at Wednesday's meeting involved developing space above BEST depots, allocating two floors for BEST offices whilst designating remaining floors for commercial use, ensuring steady revenue for the financially constrained organisation. This concept draws from Japanese cities where land resources generate supplementary income for public transport operations.
A recent MITRA meeting also explored the possibility of allowing premium aggregator buses to park in designated areas within BEST depots. This arrangement would provide parking facilities for private operators to expand their fleet whilst generating revenue for BEST through substantial parking fees. The meeting suggested the development of underground and multi-deck parking facilities at BEST's 27 depots to increase capacity.
All these will be part of the white paper being prepared in order to revive BEST, streamline private bus operations, and improve services for commuters for all categories of buses.

Rupee closes near one-month low; ends 5 paise lower at 86.42/$
Indian Rupee closed near a one-month level on Wednesday, even as trade deals signed by the US gained pace ahead of the deadline. The domestic currency closed 5 paise lower at 86.42 against the dollar on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg. The rupee has witnessed nearly 0.94 per cent depreciation in the current calendar year. In the previous session, the rupee briefly recovered to 86.22 before slipping to a one-month low of 86.41 against the greenback. Rupee traded flat in a narrow range, with marginal movement against the dollar, Jateen Trivedi, VP research analyst - commodity and currency at LKP Securities, noted. The dollar index also remained steady around 97.40 as markets awaited further cues, he said. "Domestic capital markets gained, while Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's recent speech kept the dollar range-bound. Attention now shifts to next week's U.S. interest rate decision, which will be a key directional trigger. Rupee is expected to trade within a range of 85.80–86.70," Trivedi said. On the tariffs front, the US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal, imposing a 15 per cent tariff on Japanese exports to the US. The Trump administration had also reached an agreement with the Philippines setting a 19 per cent tariff on their exports. Equity and currency markets in the Asia region rose after the deal announcement. Meanwhile, the dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.1 per cent higher at 97.39. Exporters are advised to hold off on booking, with a stop-loss at 86.25, as foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) continue to sell, analysts said. FPIs sold equities for the second straight day, worth ₹3,548.92 crore, taking the total outflows in July to ₹5826 crore. Importers, meanwhile, may consider buying on dips for near-term cash requirements, Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said. "The currency is expected to trade within a narrow range today as markets await the Reserve Bank of India's sell/buy swap data for May, which will offer insight into short positions, along with the Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER) data for June 2025," Bhansali said.

US President Donald Trump has announced trade deals with Japan and a handful of other Asian countries that will relieve some pressure on companies and consumers from sharply higher tariffs on their exports to the United States. A deal with China is under negotiation, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent saying an Aug 12 deadline might be postponed again to allow more time for talks. Steep tariffs on US imports of steel and aluminum remain, however, and many other countries, including South Korea and Thailand, have yet to clinch agreements. Overall, economists say the tariffs inevitably will dent growth in Asia and the world. The deals reached so far, ahead of Trump's Aug 1 deadline Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced a deal Wednesday that will impose 15 per cent tariffs on US imports from Japan, down from Trump's proposed 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs. It was a huge relief for automakers like Toyota Motor Corp and Honda, whose shares jumped by double digits in Tokyo. Trump also announced trade deals with the Philippines and Indonesia. After meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr, Trump said the import tax on products from his country would be subject to a 19 per cent tariff, down just 1 per cent from the earlier threat of a 20 per cent tariff. Economists have been downgrading their estimates for growth in 2025 and beyond. The Asian Development Bank said Wednesday it had cut its growth estimate for economies in developing Asia and the Pacific to 4.7 per cent in 2025 and 4.6 per cent in 2026, down 0.2 percentage points and 0.1 percentage points. The outlook for the region could be further dimmed by an escalation of tariffs and trade friction, it said. Other risks include conflicts and geopolitical tensions that could disrupt global supply chains and raise energy prices, as well as a deterioration in China's ailing property market. Economists at AMRO were less optimistic, expecting growth for Southeast Asia and other major economies in Asia at 3.8 per cent in 2025 and 3.6 per cent next year. While countries in the region have moved to protect their economies from Trump's trade shock, they face significant uncertainties, said AMRO's chief economist, Dong He. Uneven progress in tariff negotiations and the potential expansion of tariffs to additional products could further disrupt trade activities and weigh on growth for the region, he said.
