Here's the ex-Ireland man set to replace Joe Schmidt as Australia head coach

Extra.ie29-04-2025
When Joe Schmidt's Australia reign comes to an end later this year, one former Ireland backroom coach will fill his position.
Ex-Leinster and Ireland head coach Schmidt took over with the Wallabies at the beginning of 2024.
However, he has agreed upon a departure ahead of the 2027 World Cup cycle in order to relocate to his native New Zealand to look after his youngest son, who has severe epilepsy – and former Ireland defence coach Les Kiss is set to fill his shoes Down Under. Kiss is a former Ulster director of rugby, having served in the role from 2015 until 2018.
The 60-year-old previously enjoyed success as part of Ireland's coaching staff, first with Declan Kidney and latterly under Schmidt between 2009 and 2015. Les Kiss has worked extensively with former Ireland head coaches Declan Kidney (pictured) and Joe Schmidt in the past. Pic:He was defence coach in both regimes and his work yielded a Grand Slam with Kidney in 2009 as well as a Six Nations title delivered in 2014 under Schmidt.
With the pair having maintained a close working relationship, it is believed Schmidt would be open to remaining with Australia in a consultancy capacity if new boss Kiss was to offer a role to him.
Kiss is set to become the fifth Aussie head coach in six years as the country prepare to host the 2027 World Cup.

Rory McIlroy regrets 'horrific' first purchase with PGA Tour winnings

Rory McIlroy, who ranks second on the all-time career earnings list behind Tiger Woods, still recalls his first significant purchase after receiving his initial PGA Tour payout. McIlroy has an estimated net worth of €214 million and career earnings of €91,780,751 from his time on the course. He became the sixth golfer to complete the Grand Slam after clinching the Masters earlier this year. However, his first victory on the PGA Tour came just two days before his 21st birthday at the 2010 Quail Hollow Championship. This maiden win earned him €1million, and it was also the year he joined the PGA Tour. McIlroy has confessed to making a "horrific" purchase when he received his first paycheck. When quizzed about his first major buy after joining the PGA Tour, McIlroy recalled splurging on a watch. "With diamonds around it. It was horrific. I can't believe it was like the worst purchase ever. It was so bad," he admitted, reports the Irish Star. Despite this early misstep, McIlroy remains a watch aficionado with an impressive collection. However, he does regret the diamond-encrusted timepiece he bought back in 2010. When asked about the make and model of the watch, McIlroy responded: "I do. It's not the make and model that I'm sponsored by now, so I'm not going to say it." Omega has backed McIlroy since 2013, and limited edition timepieces crafted by the firm feature in his collection. McIlroy serves as a brand ambassador for Omega, though he's also been spotted sporting Audemars Piguet watches. Whilst McIlroy expressed regret over buying the mysterious timepiece, he also utilised his media session at the Caves Valley Golf Club to address the Ryder Cup. The tournament will take place at Bethpage Black Course in New York from Sept. 23-28, and McIlroy has already begun playing psychological warfare. McIlroy acknowledged that he's been approached to serve as a playing captain for Team Europe, but rejected the proposition every time it's been put forward. McIlroy then insisted it wasn't feasible due to the increased responsibilities and media duties. Keegan Bradley will lead Team U.S. and might become the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. With fewer than six weeks remaining until the 2025 Ryder Cup, McIlroy suggested that Bradley's position would be taxing if he accepts the challenge. "I don't think you can do it," McIlroy said. "I just think the commitments that a captain has the week of -- you think about the extra media that a captain has to do, you think about the extra meetings that the captains have to do with the vice captains, with the PGA of America. "In Keegan's case, preparing your speech for the opening ceremony -- just there's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big. "If you'd have said it 20 years ago, I'd say, yeah, it was probably possible to do, but how big of a spectacle and everything that's on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in. So I just think for those reasons. "Then the captain isn't going to be on the course all day, so really the captain's only going to be able to play one session on Friday, one session on Saturday. Would you rather not have a player that has the flexibility to go twice if he's playing well? There's a lot of different things that go into it, and that's why I think -- look, it's just my opinion, but I think it would just be very difficult to do."

Campese eating humble pie as Wallabies get ready for Boks backlash

AUSTRALIA are bracing for a violent backlash from the Springboks in the second Rugby Championship test in Cape Town on Saturday after their stunning upset of the Springboks at Ellis Park. The Wallabies' recovery from an early 22-0 deficit to post a first win since 1963 at the crucible of South African rugby on Sunday left many back home just as incredulous as the fans of the back-to-back world champions. Wallabies lock Will Skelton, however, said the 38-22 victory would mean only one thing when the teams clashed again at Newlands in the second round of the Rugby Championship. "They're going to try and punch you in the face this week," he said. "So we're going to have to be ready, have a good week of preparation again and really fight until the end." Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has been very clear throughout his rebuilding project over the last year that consistency of performance is the acid test of progress. That Saturday's victory backed up a win in the third test of the lost series against the British & Irish Lions was a huge positive, but the players know a humiliating reverse on Saturday would be an equally significant step backwards. Skelton said the Lions series, where Australia played well only in parts of the first two tests before producing an 80-minute performance in the third, had established a bedrock of resilience in the squad. "It's definitely been building throughout the Lions series," Skelton added. "We didn't have the best start against the Lions in the first test as well. "At 22-0 (behind on Saturday), we stuck to the game plan. We stuck to the processes. We stuck in there and we fought to come back to where we got the game." The win over world champions South Africa will mean little if they do not follow up in Cape Town, added back-up scrumhalf Tate McDermott. 'The Springboks were world class, we saw what they did in the first 20 minutes, they tore us to shreds, so we know that they're coming and they're coming hard. We've got to back it up,' he added. McDermott said he and his teammates on the replacement bench were in shock as Australia conceded three tries in 18 minutes but then in awe of the way the Wallabies recovered against the odds. 'The Springboks went bang, bang, bang pretty quick and the way that they scored their tries, through width, through skill and through power was exactly what they're famous for. 'But the way that we stuck in the fight was something I was really proud of from the bench. It looked like we always had that belief, even though you're standing there after 18 minutes and it's 22-0. "The fight that we showed to stay in there and the resolve we showed and the way we've fought our way back into that second quarter in particular was something we can be really proud of,' he added. The euphoria of the Ellis Park victory came less than two years after the nadir of the game Down Under, Australia's first ever exit in the pool stage of a World Cup. While some declared the performance in Johannesburg as the best by a Wallabies team outside a World Cup, former Australia lock Justin Harrison was more circumspect. "Comparisons with previous eras is impossible," he told Reuters. "But this is the best win since the nightmare of the 2023 World Cup, the best result for this group." Other local media sceptics of the progress being made under Schmidt, including Wallabies great David Campese, were hastily backtracking Monday. "I am eating humble pie," the 1991 World Cup winner told the Sydney Morning Herald, having said last week that Schmidt's team selection showed the New Zealander had "no idea about rugby". Reuters
