Soccer-Kane hails Son partnership as Premier League's finest after South Korean's Spurs exit
(Reuters) -Harry Kane paid tribute to his former Tottenham Hotspur teammate Son Heung-min, describing their partnership as "one of the best" in Premier League history following the South Korean's departure from the club.
Son, who combined with Kane for 47 league goals to form a lethal partnership for the best part of a decade at Spurs, joined Los Angeles FC on a record-breaking Major League Soccer transfer on Wednesday.
The 33-year-old South Korea skipper had moved to North London from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, bagging 173 goals and 101 assists in 454 appearances and leading them to their first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League title in May.
"Massive congratulations to him and his career at Tottenham," Bayern Munich striker Kane told reporters after his side's 4-0 friendly win over former club Spurs on Thursday.
"First and foremost, a great person. I've got to know him really well as a friend, and just how humble he is and how good a guy he is.
"I think as a player, you know, we had one of the best partnerships in Premier League history. We just had that connection that we loved.
"It's a great way for his Tottenham career to end, to lift the trophy last year with the team… and now it's a new chapter for him, he'll go to LA, and I wish him all the best, and I hope to see him soon and we can catch up."
Kane spent most of his career at Spurs after joining their academy as an 11-year-old, scoring a club record 280 goals in over 430 appearances in all competitions. The 32-year-old England captain joined German giants Bayern in August 2023.

Tennis-Badosa withdraws from U.S. Open as injury woes continue
FILE PHOTO: Tennis - Berlin Tennis Open - Steffi Graf Stadium, Berlin, Germany - June 20, 2025 Spain's Paula Badosa leaves after losing by a walkover her quarter final match against China's Wang Xinyu REUTERS/Annegret Hilse/File Photo (Reuters) -Spaniard Paula Badosa has withdrawn from the U.S. Open as she recovers from a back injury, tournament organisers announced on Friday. World number 12 Badosa has suffered a string of injuries, including a chronic lower back issue that even had her considering retirement. Last month, the former world number two announced she would be sidelined for a few weeks due to yet another back injury. Badosa last played at Wimbledon, where she suffered a first-round defeat. She then revealed she had suffered a tear in her psoas, the muscle which connects the lower back to the top of the leg. With Badosa's withdrawal, Switzerland's Jil Teichmann will move into the main draw of the U.S. Open, where singles action begins on August 24. Badosa has also had to withdraw from the tournament's new mixed doubles event, in which she had been expected to partner Britain's Jack Draper. Cricket-Woakes may opt for rehab over surgery in race to be fit for Ashes
FILE PHOTO: Cricket - International Test Match Series - Fifth Test - England v India - Kia Oval, London, Britain - July 31, 2025 England's Chris Woakes reacts as he leaves the field after sustaining an injury Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs/File Photo (Reuters) -England all-rounder Chris Woakes said rehabilitation is a risk he is willing to take to be fit for the Ashes rather than undergoing surgery on the shoulder injury he sustained during last week's fifth test loss to India. The 36-year-old Woakes is awaiting scan results after suffering a suspected dislocated shoulder on the opening day of the see-saw test at The Oval when he landed awkwardly trying to save a boundary. Judging by the extent of the damage his options would be either surgery or rehabilitation to strengthen the shoulder. The first Ashes test begins in Perth on November 21. "I suppose... there will be a chance of a re-occurrence, but that could be a risk that you're just willing to take," Woakes told BBC Sport on Friday. "From what I've heard from physios and specialists is that the rehab of a surgery option would be closer to three to four months. That's obviously touching on the Ashes and Australia so it makes it tricky. "From a rehab point of view you can probably get it strong again within eight weeks. So that could be an option, but again obviously still waiting to get the full report on it." Although ruled out of the remainder of the fifth test, he returned to bat on the final morning with his left arm strapped in a sling as England pushed for a series win. Woakes entered at number 11 with 17 runs still needed, he did not face a ball but ran four before Gus Atkinson was bowled, leaving India to seal a six-run victory to level the series 2-2 on Monday. Woakes received praise for his bravery, though he downplayed it by saying anyone else in the dressing room would have done the same. "In my eyes it was just business as usual... in that moment it was to go out there and try and find a way with Gus at the other end to try and get us over the line," he added. "Unfortunately, it didn't happen but I'm grateful and thankful that I put up the fight and tried to do it for the team." (Reporting by Shifa Jahan in Bengaluru, editing by Pritha Sarkar)

Soccer-Ter Stegen defends surgery timeline as Barcelona face player registration woes
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - LaLiga - Real Valladolid v FC Barcelona - Estadio Jose Zorrilla, Valladolid, Spain - May 3, 2025 FC Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen before the match REUTERS/Isabel Infantes/File Photo (Reuters) -Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen hit back at suggestions he is to blame for the club's inability to register new players, insisting on Friday that his back surgery and recovery timeline were fully approved by the Spanish champions. The 33-year-old German's three-month rehabilitation schedule has created an unexpected headache for Barcelona, who had hoped to use his injury to ease their Financial Fair Play constraints under LaLiga rules. Barcelona had asked him to sign a long-term medical leave that would allow them to clear 80% of his wages until mid-season and comply with LaLiga's Financial Fair Play rules, thereby allowing them to register new players. But Ter Stegen's announcement on social media that he would be sidelined for only three months irked the club management as LaLiga rules require a player to remain out of action for at least four months to be considered a long-term injury. "The decision to undergo surgery was made after consultation with medical professionals and fully approved by the club," Ter Stegen said in a statement on Instagram, a day after he was stripped of the club's captaincy. "Moreover, I announced publicly the minimum recovery timing that I shall need after that, which had been communicated to me by most reputed experts and always in coordination with the club." SEASON STARTS AUGUST 15 Barca signed 24-year-old goalkeeper Joan Garcia from local rivals Espanyol last month while Marcus Rashford was signed on loan from Manchester United. However, both players are yet to be registered with the new LaLiga season kicking off on August 15. "I would also like to clarify - in light of certain speculation - that all of the club's signings and contract renewals were completed prior to my surgery," Ter Stegen added. "Therefore at no point could I consider that my unfortunate circumstances with the new surgery I had to undergo would be necessary for the registration of other colleagues... Any alternative interpretation seems both unfair and inaccurate to me. "I understand that difficult moments can generate tension, but I trust through dialogue and responsibility we can resolve this situation constructively. I am fully willing to collaborate with the club's management to resolve the matter and provide the requested authorization." The controversy highlights Barcelona's financial struggles as they battle to register new signings once again. Last season, the club approached Spain's National Sports Council to allow them to field Dani Olmo and Pau Victor until the end of the season after LaLiga said they did not have the capacity to register the two players based on their accounts.
