West Bengal STF arrests two JMB operatives for planning attacks in India

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 9 (ANI): West Bengal's Special Task Force (STF) on Friday arrested two individuals, Ajmol Hossain (28) from Nalhati and Saheb Ali Khan (28) from Murarai, for allegedly spreading the ideology of the banned terrorist group Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and planning attacks in India.
The arrests were made during simultaneous raids in the Birbhum district on May 8-9, 2025, according to the West Bengal STF.
The suspects were found to be propagating JMB's ideology and were part of a module that is engaged in dissemination of seditious and jihadi materials by using encrypted sophisticated mediums.
They were allegedly planning to target specific people and places in India, aiming to harm the country's sovereignty.
The suspects were involved in recruiting young Muslim men, trying to radicalise them and encourage them to join terrorist groups.
Ajmol Hossain had previously attempted to enter Bangladesh for jihadi activities and has connections across the subcontinent.
The suspects, along with others, tried to buy firearms and make explosives to support their cause of 'Ghazwatul Hind.'
The two suspects will be presented in court, and the police have requested remand to continue questioning them and investigating further links to their network.
In a related incident, the STF of Kolkata Police had earlier arrested two individuals, including a woman, for the illegal possession of firearms. Aziz Molla (36) was found with 10 improvised single-barrel firearms, and Moyana Majhi (32) was found with a single-barrel firearm. (ANI)

UP: Eid-ul-Azha celebrated amid tight security
Lucknow, Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across the state on Saturday with people offering namaaz amidst tight security. In the state capital, namaaz was offered at the Lucknow Eidgah under the Shahi Imam of Lucknow, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali. UP's Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna on Thursday issued directives ensuring the peaceful and safe observance of the festival across the state. The police implemented a multi-pronged strategy, focusing on preventive measures, community engagement and heightened vigilance, with police stations thoroughly reviewing their festival registers to prevent the initiation of any new traditions. Meetings were held with religious leaders, peace committees, civil defence personnel and prominent citizens, in coordination with local magistrates and other relevant departments, to foster coordination and dialogue. Permission for any new traditions related to sacrifice was denied, while a strict ban on the sacrifice of prohibited animals was enforced. Furthermore, coordination was established with municipal corporations and other departments for the proper disposal of remains after sacrifice. The police catalogued all Eid-ul-Azha events and hotspots. Additional police, PAC , and Home Guard forces were strategically deployed under gazetted officers within zones or sectors. Similarly, in Sambhal and Bareilly, the Eid-ul-Azha namaaz was held peacefully amid heavy police deployment. "We had a peace committee meeting for Eid-ul-Azha. Everyone agreed to not sacrifice in public places. We have set up a three-tier security system and we spoke to maulanas, muftis, and representatives of mosques. There was an agreement to not sacrifice animals at public places and 19 designated places were agreed upon for sacrifice," Sambhal District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya told reporters at the Eidgah. In Amethi, prayers were conducted at 367 mosques and Eidgahs, with different timings established to ensure peaceful observance. Superintendent of Police Aparna Rajat Kaushik assured that people were celebrating the festival with great joy while maintaining peace.

Five Maoists gunned down in encounters in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district
Five Maoists were killed in two encounters with security forces in an ongoing operation in the Indravati National Park area of Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said on Saturday (June 7, 2025). With the latest casualties, seven Maoists, including top leaders Sudhakar and Bhaskar, were neutralised in the operation in the last three days, they said. 'Security forces have recovered the bodies of seven Maoists during the ongoing anti-Naxal operations in the Indravati National Park area of the district,' a senior police official said. On Saturday (June 7, 2025), two bodies were recovered following a gunfight, while three were found after the exchange of fire on the intervening night of Friday (June 6, 2025) and Saturday (June 7, 2025), he said. The official said the operation involving personnel from the state police's Special Task Force (STF) and District Reserve Guard (DRG) as well as the CRPF's specialised unit CoBRA, was launched on June 4 based on input about the presence of Maoist leader Sudhakar, Telangana State Committee member Bandi Prakash, Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) member Pappa Rao, and a few other armed cadres. On Friday (June 6, 2025), security forces neutralised Bhaskar, alias Mailarapu Adellu, a special zonal committee (SZC) member of the Telangana State Committee (TSC) of Maoists who carried a reward of Rs 45 lakh in Chhattisgarh and Telangana, and Maoists' central committee member Narasimha Chalam, alias Sudhakar, who had a bounty of Rs 40 lakh in Chhattisgarh, was killed on Thursday (June 5, 2025), he said. The official said the identity of five more killed Maoists, two of them women, is yet to be ascertained. A huge cache of arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles, has been seized in the operation, he said, adding that search and area domination operations were underway in the surrounding forested terrain to track remaining Maoist cadres and ensure complete sanitisation of the region. A few security personnel have suffered injuries due to snakebite, honeybee sting, dehydration and other operational injuries during the operation and were provided medication, the official said. The outlawed CPI (Maoist) general secretary Nambala Keshav Rao, alias Basavaraju (70), was neutralised in the Bastar region on May 21, 2025.
