Over 140,000 lost MyKad cases involve youths
She said this figure is extremely worrying because MyKad is an important document that serves as access to various official matters.
She said that one of the main factors cited for the loss of MyKad is negligence, which accounted for 136,000 cases, and expressed concern over the risk of identity theft and fraud as well as difficulty in settling official matters, particularly those involving the government.
'So, when these youths are negligent, this will become a risk, namely having to face the prospect of being fined for a replacement MyKad, the time taken to get the replacement as well as the emotional stress,' she told a media conference after chairing the Strategic Collaboration Coordination Meeting between the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) and the National Registration Department (NRD) here today.
Also present was NRD director-general Badrul Hisham Alias.
Hannah added that Selangor had the highest number of cases of MyKad loss involving youth, with 23,000 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (20,000 cases) and Johor (17,000 cases).
'We don't know why these three states (recorded the highest number of cases)... it could be due to them having big urban areas.
'There are lots of commercial activities in urban areas, so the MyKad is frequently handed over, such as at security posts at housing areas and commercial buildings... so it is very likely that this is closely related,' she said.
She said the meeting also studied in detail various intervention measures to be implemented through strategic collaboration between the KBS and NRD, including carrying out a digital advocacy campaign through the dissemination of graphic materials like posters and video clips on social media and official portals.
She added that the intervention measures involved delivering information regarding NRD services to youths, particularly through programmes organised by the KBS as well as departments and agencies under it.
'We will also provide counters or booths related to NRD services when organising major ministry programmes, such as the National Youth Day, National Sports Day and so on,' she said.
Hannah said the KBS and NRD also agreed to forge a collaboration to implement the 'Menyemai Kasih Rakyat' (MEKAR) programme to assist individuals who require NRD services, besides expanding the programme to include former national athletes.

KUALA LUMPUR: A Road Transport Department (RTD) operation targeting foreigners driving heavy vehicles has uncovered what is believed to be a syndicate selling fake driver's licences and identification documents. RTD senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the discovery was made when enforcement officers stopped a lorry, driven by a foreigner, along the Middle Ring Road 2 near Selayang at about 5.30pm. "The driver, believed to be 40, handed over his driver's licence, MyKad, and goods driver's licence for inspection. "Our officers immediately noticed discrepancies in the documents. "The font used differed slightly from those on genuine documents, raising suspicion," he told reporters at the Gombak RTD Enforcement Station today. He said the driver was questioned for some time before he admitted that he was actually a passport holder. "Our personnel were conducting further checks on the documents when he suddenly fled into the nearby jungle. "We believe this man had purchased these documents from a syndicate," he said, adding that further investigations and intelligence gathering are underway to identify those behind the operation. During today's operation, Kifli said officers also detained another foreign driver after stopping a trailer truck near Sungai Pusu, Gombak. "The driver, in his 40s, did not have any documents on him. "We detained him and handed him over to the Immigration Department for further action as he was believed to have overstayed," he said. Kifli said it was high time companies exercised greater accountability and responsibility. "Why can't these companies hire locals who have the relevant documents in order to operate these vehicles legally? "Based on our checks, these foreigners were paid at least RM2,500," he said, adding that the drivers were believed to have been hired to operate vehicles transporting waste and construction equipment.

Housewife charged with possession of 205 M'sian passports, fake MyKad
SHAH ALAM: A 41-year-old housewife pleaded not guilty at a Magistrates' Court here Thursday (Aug 7) to three charges of possessing 205 Malaysian passports, MyKad belonging to three men, and one fake MyKad last month. N. Paarvathy entered the plea after the charges were read out before Magistrate Muhammad Syafiq Sulaiman. According to the first charge, she was accused of being in possession of 205 Malaysian passports under Section 12(1)(f) of the Passports Act 1966, which carries a maximum fine of RM10,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction. For the second and third charges, she was accused of possessing a fake MyKad in the name of a 24-year-old man, as well as three MyKads belonging to men aged 19, 21, and 31 years old, without a reasonable excuse. The offences were allegedly committed at a condominium unit in Taman Puchong Hartamas, Puchong, at 12.10am on July 11. The second and third charges were brought under Regulations 25(1)(o) and 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, which carry a maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.
