Lottie Woad is so proud after ‘perfect' Irish Open success at Carton House

Belfast Telegraph16 hours ago
English amateur Lottie Woad emerged as a future superstar when she romped to a six-stroke win in the KPMG Women's Irish Open at Carton House.
The World Amateur No.1 (21) went into the final day with a seven-stroke lead and while that was reduced to five shots when she made just her fourth bogey of the week at the 15th, she birdied the 16th and 17th to close with a four-under 69 and win by six strokes from Swede Madelene Sagstrom, who shot 68, on 21-under.

Golf star wins tournament by six shots but sees £58k prize money go to runner-up

One up-and-coming golf star made a mighty impression after winning the Irish Open by six shots, but the 21-year-old is not allowed to take home the grand prize due to her amateur status A golfing sensation who won a tournament by six strokes has been denied the £58,000 top prize due to her amateur status. English golfer Lottie Woad put on a masterclass to secure her first Ladies European Tour title, dominating the KPMG Women's Irish Open for an easy win. The 21-year-old made history as the first amateur player in three years to triumph on the Ladies European Tour, finishing on an impressive 21-under and only hitting four bogeys across the four rounds. However, she won't see a penny of the prize money for her remarkable performance, with the top prize instead going to the runner-up. ‌ This is because the LPGA prospect's amateur status prohibits her from pocketing any winnings. If Woad held her tour card, she would've walked away five figures richer for her efforts. ‌ Instead, Swedish star Madelene Sagstrom will be laughing all the way to the bank. Woad, currently the world's top-ranked amateur player, made six birdies and two bogeys in the final round. She broke 70 across all four rounds to become the first amateur player to win since Czech Jana Melichova clinched the 2022 Czech Ladies Open. She kicked off with an impressive round of 68 before delivering back-to-back rounds of 67. Woad entered the final day with a seven-shot lead and showed no signs of letting it slip. She birdied two of her opening four holes and then offset a disappointing bogey on the fifth hole by nailing another birdie on the eighth. It's hardly the first time Woad has made headlines as an amateur. She won the 2022 Girls Amateur Championship, then followed that up with victory at the Augusta National Women's Amateur last year. Despite clinching victory with a six-shot lead, Woad remains unswayed by the prospect of turning professional: "No, I'm not tempted to turn pro yet. I'm still trying to get my final two points for the LPGA. I'm trying to get those and then we will see what happens after that. It means a lot to get the win. ‌ "Obviously, I had a big lead coming into today, but I still had to really focus as I was being chased by some really good players. I'm happy to get it done. It's perfect. I feel like I'm playing well, and I hope to continue that into [the] Evian [Championship] next week. "It felt pretty comfortable overall. There were a few moments at the start of the back nine that could've gone wrong but I hung in there and finished with some nice birdies." She also detailed a key moment that aided her composure in the final round: "As soon as I birdied the second hole, holed a nice 12-footer there, it settled me in. I hit some good shots today, maybe didn't hole as many putts as the other days, but it was pretty stress-free in the end." The Florida State University student is biding her time before hitting the big time. And it's hard to argue with the logic considering she's now starting to make an impression in LPGA circles.

Bournemouth and Middlesbrough tracking Czech starlet with 35 goal involvements

Bournemouth and Middlesbrough have both made transfer checks on highly-rated Viktoria Plzen playmaker Pavel Sulc Bournemouth and Championship side Middlesbrough are among a list of clubs to have made initial enquiries for Viktoria Plzen attacking midfielder Pavel Sulc. The 24-year-old Czechia international is set to leave his current employers this summer after hitting 20 goals and registering 15 assists in 54 appearances in all competitions last season. Plzen are yet to receive any formal offers for Sulc to date but his representatives have been fielding calls over his availability and there have been requests to gauge the numbers involved in a potential transfer deal. ‌ Crucially, Sulc is now into the final year of his contract and Plzen are now anticipating a sale before the conclusion of the summer window. ‌ Andoni Iraola's Cherries and Boro, who recently appointed former Luton boss Rob Edwards, are among the clubs monitoring the player and they're not alone, as other unnamed English sides are also believed to be in the fray. There is also vast interest from Italy - namely from Lazio - Germany and Turkey, however, at this stage no deal is close and the race for Sulc's services remains well and truly open. Bournemouth are thought to be prioritising defensive reinforcements after raising £90million following the sales of Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez to Real Madrid and Liverpool, respectively, but they're also keen to bolster their attacking options. Lille centre-back Bafode Diakite remains a primary target at the back but Lazio's Mario Gila and Bournemouth's Joel Ordonez have also been shortlisted. Sulc is a No.10 but he can also operate in a deeper midfield role and additionally, he possesses the skillset to play in other positions across the frontline. ‌ He was named the Czech First League's Player of the Season and Best Midfielder last term after firing 11 goals and also notching eight assists as Plzen finished runners up to Slavia Prague. Sulc, who has won 12 caps for his country, recently travelled to Westendorf, Austria for Plzen's pre-season training camp as they gear up for their Champions League second-round qualifying clash against Swiss outfit Servette later this month. By all accounts, Plzen do not expect him to be part of their squad for the forthcoming season as they're cautious he will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January 1, 2026.

Children in Wales take part in mass singalong for Euro 2025

The event, known as the Wales' Women's Euro Singalong 2025, took place on Wednesday, July 2, and involved 1,051 primary schools across Wales. It was organised by Urdd Gobaith Cymru in partnership with the Football Association of Wales, S4C, and Boom Cymru. Siân Lewis, chief executive of the Urdd, said: "The Urdd's #FelMerch campaign aims to inspire and empower young women and girls throughout the country, so we've jumped at the chance to show our support to the Welsh women's squad by arranging a nationwide singalong, with the help of our partners. "Our singalong is a fantastic opportunity for pupils at Welsh and English-medium schools alike to come together, be proud of their Welsh heritage, and feel part of the national football team's campaign." The event, held at 10:30am, gave primary school children the chance to celebrate and support the Welsh women's football team. Children sang a selection of Welsh songs, including a new anthem, Ymlaen (Onwards), written by singer-songwriter Caryl Parry Jones and producer Branwen Munn. Singer and presenter Aleighcia Scott, who appeared as a coach on S4C's Y Llais, said: "It's a momentous occasion for the Welsh women to be competing at the Euros for the first time, and I can't wait to take part in the Urdd's singalong to celebrate this historical moment and bring Welsh children along on the journey. "It's been an amazing journey for me learning Welsh so far, and taking part in events like the Urdd's singalong makes me feel like the Welsh language does belong to me, and it can belong to all the children of Wales too." In Lucerne, Switzerland, where Wales will play their opening game, the Urdd is also showcasing contemporary Welsh folk talent as part of its #FelMerch campaign. The campaign aims to inspire and empower young women and girls to stay active and overcome barriers to participation in sport. The Urdd will also host a National Female #FelMerch Sports Conference at Cardiff City Stadium on November 13 as part of the tournament's legacy. The event follows the success of previous conferences designed to support and empower women and girls through sport. The Urdd's Euro 2025 projects are supported by the Welsh Government's Euro 2025 Partner Support Fund.
