Ekuinas committed direct investments up to RM5bil for FY24
In a statement yesterday, the government-linked private equity company said funds under management increased by 19% to RM5bil.
Its operating expenditure-to-funds under management ratio remained steady at 1.1%.
The private-equity company said the gross internal rate of return (GIRR) for the Ekuinas Direct Tranche IV Fund was 38.9%, while Tranche II Fund was 12%.
'Ekuinas Direct Tranche III Fund showed modest improvement with a GIRR of 1.6%. Meanwhile, our outsourced programme reported GIRRs of 3.8% for Tranche I and minus 6.9% for Tranche II,' Ekuinas said.
The earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) of portfolio companies under Ekuinas Direct Funds grew by 3.3%, rebounding from a 7% contraction in 2023.
Unitar Education group recorded Ebitda of 77.2% while Medispec (M) Sdn Bhd and Exabytes Capital Group achieved 48.7% and 30.9% Ebitda growth, respectively. — Bernama

Defence spending raised to RM5bil in light of global uncertainties, PM tells Dewan Rakyat
KUALA LUMPUR: Defence expenditure increased from RM3bil in 2020 to more than RM5bil last year, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said the additional expenses allocated to the Defence Ministry were aimed at development and procurement efforts in light of geopolitical uncertainties. 'Recently, there was an increased military presence by the Philippines and the United States in the south of the Philippines, close to Sabah. 'I contacted Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr and according to him, it was due to China's offensive. Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) wanted to know Malaysia's defence readiness amid global and regional uncertainties. Anwar also said government-to-government negotiations are carried out for defence procurements in various situations. This includes negotiations with South Korea and Turkiye. 'This way, the cost goes down,' he said, adding that there is no longer the need to pay exorbitant costs charged by agents. 'At the same time, the procured items will be delivered,' he added. According to Anwar, government-to-government procurement also allows the Defence Ministry, Royal Malaysian Air Force and Royal Malaysian Navy to contact their counterparts directly without the need for a middleman. According to Anwar, unmanned aerial system drones from Turkiye are set to arrive in December, while two sets of surface-to-surface missile launchers will arrive from Norway this month, among others.

Indian socioeconomic development, defence readiness among key focus at Dewan Rakyat
KUALA LUMPUR: The Madani government's efforts to uplift the Indian community's socioeconomic status and strengthen national defence preparedness amid global geopolitical uncertainties are among the main focus in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 19). According to the Order of Business on the Parliament website, S. Kesavan (PH-Sungai Siput), during the Ministers' Question Time, will ask the Prime Minister to state the government's focus through the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) or other agencies in driving the community's socioeconomic development holistically. During the same session, Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) will ask the Prime Minister to state the country's level of defence preparedness in facing global and regional geopolitical challenges. In the question-and-answer session, Tan Hong Pin (PH-Bakri) will query the Home Minister about progress in resolving 11,000 pending citizenship applications by June 2025 and short-term measures to assist unsuccessful applicants. Meanwhile, Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) asked the Higher Education Minister about actions against 400,000 National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) borrowers who have defaulted on RM5bil in loans after 10 years. Lim will also ask whether the ministry plans to grant targeted PTPTN loan waivers for the hardcore poor. Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli (BN-Jempol), in the same session, will ask the Communications Minister about mechanisms to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) technology and whether legislation will be introduced requiring producers to label AI-generated or manipulated content. Following the Q&A session, the Dewan Rakyat will resume with winding-up speeches by relevant ministers on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). A total of 161 MPs participated in the 13MP debate, which took place over eight days starting Aug 4. The 13MP, themed 'Redesigning Development', was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also Finance Minister, on July 31, with an investment allocation of RM611bil for the 2026 to 2030 period. Government can consider RM100 student aid, says Anwar
SEPANG: The government can consider another one-off RM100 payment for students to cope with rising costs, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister and Finance Minister said the request will be weighed during preparations for next year's budget. He was responding to a Multimedia University student who asked for a repeat of the RM100 one-off aid given earlier this year. 'We can take this into consideration in the budget,' Anwar said during a dialogue at the university in Cyberjaya yesterday. He said prices of fuel, noodles, chicken, eggs and sugar in Malaysia remain lower than in many countries, and added that the cost of living is a constant concern and the government is working to address it alongside poverty eradication. Anwar said that student aid must be balanced with other societal needs. 'I accept this request and we will consider it in next year's budget,' he said. He added that flood mitigation in Kelantan also requires funding, Johor seeks high value industries while Kedah faces grinding poverty. Anwar added that requests for assistance arise everywhere and the government will provide what it can. He said the recent civil service pay review prioritised the lowest grades. 'That is why we did not raise the salaries of ministers and deputy ministers,' he added. He said better governance and anti-corruption efforts will free up more funds for the people. 'Recently, enforcement agencies seized between RM4bil to RM5bil from corrupt and misappropriated funds,' he said. Anwar then said that these funds can be returned to the people.
