‘Bright Star': A Beautiful Rendering of a Brief and Powerful Life

Epoch Times5 days ago
Jane Campion's critically-acclaimed 2009 biopic of Romantic poet John Keats, 'Bright Star,' captures the tragic figure of the young poet Keats through the story of his turbulent romance with Frances Brawne.
Keats met Fanny Brawne in the autumn of 1818 when her family visited the family he was staying with. Their encounters lead to a deepening romance. During this time, Keats cared for his sick brother, Tom, who died of tuberculosis not long after Keats met Brawne. Eventually, Brawne and her family moved into one half of the estate, and Keats and Brawne were able to see each other every day. After the passing of his brother, Keats's attention turned fully to two objects: his poetry and his growing love for Brawne.

These Are the Most Exciting Games From the Largest Tabletop Gaming Convention in America

Paverson Games Luthier, expected by September 2025, $90 Luthier is the second game from Paverson Games, the publisher of Distilled, one of our favorite strategy games. It's a worker-placement game all about making instruments during Europe's Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods. We love Distilled, and it's always exciting when a publisher hits it out of the park on the first try. But such success also puts a lot of pressure on the next release, so we're excited to see that Luthier seems to be bringing a similar attention to detail and integration of theme that we appreciate in Distilled. Throughout the game, you place your workers (keeping their value secret, in a mechanic called 'secret bidding') around the board to take different actions — building instruments, attracting wealthy patrons, putting on performances, going to market, and so on. Doing so can give you extra power, materials, and other bonuses. The higher the value of a worker you place at a location, the earlier you'll be able to take the associated action, and the more powerful that action will be. Worker placement is a popular game mechanic, and combining it with secret bidding is an interesting new wrinkle that we're curious to see in action. This game also looks gorgeous, with details in the art and board design that reinforce the theme. And if Distilled is any indication, the box organization should be great. Luthier should be available to the public in August or September. We'll be testing it to see how it compares with our current favorite strategy games. The Spinners' ‘Pick of the Litter' Turns 50

The start of album-oriented romantic soul can be traced to May 1968, when the Delfonics released 'La La Means I Love You.' Inspired by the earlier cooing ballad style of Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Barbara Lynn, Baby Washington and Little Anthony, the LP ushered in a new Philadelphia music movement marked by vocals that expressed true love, sincerity and respect for one's romantic partner. The rise of black-owned FM radio stations playing R&B gave the genre momentum. On the other end of the timeline, one of the last landmark albums in this genre before the onset of disco was the Spinners' 'Pick of the Litter,' released 50 years ago this month. The record became the vocal group's highest-charting LP on the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 8, and it climbed to No. 2 on the soul album chart. The album's single 'They Just Can't Stop It (Games People Play)' reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the soul chart.

Brandon Blackstock was in ‘loving' relationship with ex-wife Kelly Clarkson's former assistant at time of his death: obituary

Brandon Blackstock found a 'beautiful and loving' romantic partner in his ex-wife Kelly Clarkson's former assistant prior to his death, according to the late business manager's obituary. 'Brandon, along with his beautiful and loving partner in life and business, Brittney Marie Jones, started building a life, building companies, and working tirelessly to create Headwaters Livestock Auction and what will live on as his legacy, The Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana,' the tribute, which was published Tuesday, reads. Blackstock died last Thursday after a private battle with melanoma. He was 48 years old. According to Jones' LinkedIn, she served as the original 'American Idol' winner's assistant from 2016 to 2020 — which, coincidentally, is the same year Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock. Their divorce was finalized in 2022 after years of contentious legal proceedings. As a result of their settlement, Clarkson kept their Montana Ranch. However, she lived in New York City with their two children, daughter River, 11, and son Remington, 9. Blackstock continued to live in Montana where he went on to establish his Valley View Rodeo with Jones in December 2024, according to the US Sun. The complete nature of the pair's relationship remains unclear at this time. Though, Jones appears to have been previously married to drummer Greg Goose LaPoint. An Instagram post from LaPoint dated in Sept. 11, 2021, showed the couple celebrating one year of marriage with a carousel of photos. They appear to have since called it quits. Page Six has been unable to independently confirm the details of LaPoint's breakup from Jones. However, we can report LaPoint has with a woman named Arika Vanessa, whom he's reportedly been dating since February. Still, Jones' father posted a Facebook tribute to Blackstock following his death last week, calling him his daughter's 'soulmate.' 'Yesterday we lost a good man Brandon Blackstock my daughter's soulmate and I considered him my son,' he wrote. 'My sincere condolences to Brittney Jones and family. We're sure going to miss your funny humor. R.I.P hoss!' Page Six has reached out to reps for Clarkson, Blackstock and Jones, but did not immediately receive any responses. While Blackstock may have moved on after his split from the 'Stronger' hitmaker, Clarkson, 43, was still there to care for him in the months leading up to his tragic passing. As we previously reported, the songstress took a hiatus from her eponymous talk show in February and March to tend to Blackstock and, most recently, canceled a number of her Las Vegas residency shows for the second time just before his death. The singer has not yet publicly commented on the loss, but a source claimed Clarkson was 'devastated' for their children. 'When she found out that he was sick, she remained protective of him for their sake,' a source told People, noting how Clarkson has 'always tried to keep things classy.' 'It became clear earlier this year that Brandon was not doing well,' they continued. 'She's been devastated for the kids.'
