iPhone 17, Pro, Pro Max may launch on September 9: Battery, display, chipset, design and other details

India Today6 days ago
Apple is gearing up to unveil its next-generation iPhones, and if the company sticks to its usual schedule, the iPhone 17 series may go official on September 9 or 10. While Apple has not confirmed the date yet, the timeline fits well with the brand's annual pattern of holding launch events in the second week of September, soon after the Labor Day holiday in the US.advertisementThe information comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who noted in his weekly newsletter that Apple is most likely to host the event on September 9 (Tuesday) or September 10 (Wednesday). Over the past decade, most iPhone launches have taken place on similar weekdays, adding more weight to these predictions. This year, Apple is expected to introduce four iPhone models, the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The event may also see the debut of three new Apple Watches, including the Watch Series 11, SE 3, and Watch Ultra 3.
In terms of design, Apple may finally introduce some noticeable changes, especially with the iPhone 17 Air and the Pro models. Leaks suggest a completely new rear camera setup with a horizontal layout replacing the traditional vertical stack. The Air variant is also rumoured to be slimmer than the current Pro model by around 2mm, indicating a lighter and more compact design. The standard iPhone 17 could see a bump in screen size — from 6.1 to 6.3 inches. More importantly, Apple may bring a 120Hz refresh rate to the regular models for the first time. Until now, this smooth scrolling and animation feature has been exclusive to the Pro models. However, advanced features like ProMotion, which adjusts the refresh rate dynamically, may still remain limited to the higher-end variants.Another big highlight of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max could be a new display layer that is more resistant to scratches and reflections. Apple has reportedly resolved earlier production issues that delayed this feature last year, and it now appears ready for mass rollout. The coating is expected to improve visibility under harsh light and reduce screen glare, an area where Samsung currently holds an edge with its latest Gorilla Glass Armor. Apple's new screen tech, however, is likely to remain exclusive to the Pro lineup.Under the hood, the entire iPhone 17 series is expected to be powered by Apple's upcoming A19 chip. The new processor could bring not only faster performance but also better battery efficiency. Apple may also introduce a vapour chamber-based cooling system to handle heat during demanding tasks like gaming or video editing.advertisementAll four models may come with Apple's new Wi-Fi 7 chip, which is designed to offer faster and more stable internet connectivity. The Pro and Air variants are also expected to get 12GB of RAM, while the base iPhone 17 might stick to 8GB.On the camera front, Apple seems to be working on a major upgrade for selfies. Reports suggest the iPhone 17 will include a 24MP front camera, doubling the resolution from the current 12MP shooter. The rear camera on the standard model is likely to feature a 48MP sensor, but features like telephoto zoom are expected to remain exclusive to the Pro models. There's also buzz around a mechanical aperture system for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which could help in capturing better low-light and daylight shots. While exact battery specifications are still under wraps, the inclusion of larger displays hints at bigger battery packs. Apple may also bump up the charging speed to 35W across the lineup — a slight improvement, though still behind some Android competitors. If Apple follows its usual pattern, press invites for the launch event could be sent out in the first week of September. Until then, more details about the iPhone 17 lineup are likely to surface online through leaks and analyst reports.- Ends

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G design leaked, could be our first real glimpse

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G launch is about 6 months away, and a realistic-looking smartphone design has just surfaced, giving us an early glimpse of the potential design. The smartphone is already hyped as leaks and rumours about its upgrades are circulating, but as we get a first glimpse, the Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G looks like it's shaping out expectations for next year's flagship. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G is expected to come with a new camera module design to store enhanced camera lenses.(Ice Universe) Coming to the Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G design, we could notice a few potential changes, such as three grouped camera lenses, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The smartphone frame is also looking slightly thicker than usual, but the overall thickness and weight are expected to be reduced in comparison to the current model. Therefore, let's have a closer look at what the Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G could look like during the launch. While the tipster showed uncertainty about the final design, the previous leaks have hinted towards a similar-looking design. As of now, the Galaxy S25 Ultra 5G do not come with a separate camera module or bump, which makes the device slightly thicker. However, this could likely change with the new generation model. Also read: Samsung Galaxy S25 FE may not be as powerful as we expected it to be, this may be the reason Reportedly, Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G could launch with an even slimmer design than its predecessor. Whereas, it is reported to bring larger apertures for its 5x telephoto lens for more light to enter the lens, requiring more space; hence, the next year's Ultra model could feature a camera module that could measure around 3mm in thickness. Furthermore, the camera module may look very similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 grouped lenses, housing a main, ultrawide, and a 5x telephoto lens. Therefore, Samsung is expected to retain a slimmer build without compromising on crucial features. The camera bump will also allow the company to bring enhancements to camera performance, despite losing a few millimetres on the overall design. Well, the final design is yet to be confirmed, but the fan-made design render looks quite promising with the expected upgrades and design changes. Now, we simply have to wait a few more months to know what the real Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G would look like.

Musk says Tesla, Samsung Electronics sign $16.5 billion chip supply deal

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the U.S. automaker had signed a $16.5 billion deal to source chips from Samsung Electronics, a move expected to bolster the South Korean tech giant's loss-making contract manufacturing business. Samsung shares rose more than 4% after the news. 'Samsung's giant new Texas fab will be dedicated to making Tesla's next-generation AI6 chip. The strategic importance of this is hard to overstate,' Musk said in a post on X on Monday. If Musk was referring to Samsung's upcoming Taylor, Texas, plant, the deal could revive the project that has faced delays amid Samsung's struggles to retain and win major customers. 'Samsung agreed to allow Tesla to assist in maximizing manufacturing efficiency. This is a critical point, as I will walk the line personally to accelerate the pace of progress. And the fab is conveniently located not far from my house,' Musk said on his social media platform. Samsung had earlier announced the $16.5 billion chip supply deal without naming the client, saying the customer had requested confidentiality about the details of the deal, which will run through the end of 2033. Three sources briefed about the matter told Reuters that Tesla was the customer for the deal. The deal comes as Samsung faces mounting pressure in the race to produce artificial intelligence chips, where it trails rivals such as TSMC and SK Hynix. This lag has weighed heavily on its profits and share price. Samsung, the world's top memory chip maker, also makes logic chips designed by customers through its foundry business. Pak Yuak, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, said the latest deal would help reduce losses at Samsung's foundry business, which he estimated exceeded 5 trillion won ($3.63 billion) in the first half of the year. Analysts say Samsung has struggled with the defection of key clients to TSMC for advanced chips. TSMC counts Apple, Nvidia and Qualcomm among its customers. The Samsung-Tesla deal may also be significant for South Korea, which is seeking U.S. partnerships in chips and shipbuilding amid last-ditch efforts to reach a trade deal to eliminate or reduce potential 25% U.S. tariffs. Samsung is grappling to boost production yields of its latest 2-nanometer technology, but the order is unlikely to involve the cutting-edge tech, said Lee Min-hee, an analyst at BNK Investment & Securities. Samsung has been losing market share to TSMC in contract manufacturing, underscoring technological challenges the firm faces in mastering advanced chip manufacturing to attract clients like Apple and Nvidia, analysts said.
