iPhone 17, Pro, Pro Max may launch on September 9: Battery, display, chipset, design and other details

India Today3 days ago
Apple is gearing up to unveil its next-generation iPhones, and if the company sticks to its usual schedule, the iPhone 17 series may go official on September 9 or 10. While Apple has not confirmed the date yet, the timeline fits well with the brand's annual pattern of holding launch events in the second week of September, soon after the Labor Day holiday in the US.advertisementThe information comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who noted in his weekly newsletter that Apple is most likely to host the event on September 9 (Tuesday) or September 10 (Wednesday). Over the past decade, most iPhone launches have taken place on similar weekdays, adding more weight to these predictions. This year, Apple is expected to introduce four iPhone models, the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The event may also see the debut of three new Apple Watches, including the Watch Series 11, SE 3, and Watch Ultra 3.
In terms of design, Apple may finally introduce some noticeable changes, especially with the iPhone 17 Air and the Pro models. Leaks suggest a completely new rear camera setup with a horizontal layout replacing the traditional vertical stack. The Air variant is also rumoured to be slimmer than the current Pro model by around 2mm, indicating a lighter and more compact design. The standard iPhone 17 could see a bump in screen size — from 6.1 to 6.3 inches. More importantly, Apple may bring a 120Hz refresh rate to the regular models for the first time. Until now, this smooth scrolling and animation feature has been exclusive to the Pro models. However, advanced features like ProMotion, which adjusts the refresh rate dynamically, may still remain limited to the higher-end variants.Another big highlight of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max could be a new display layer that is more resistant to scratches and reflections. Apple has reportedly resolved earlier production issues that delayed this feature last year, and it now appears ready for mass rollout. The coating is expected to improve visibility under harsh light and reduce screen glare, an area where Samsung currently holds an edge with its latest Gorilla Glass Armor. Apple's new screen tech, however, is likely to remain exclusive to the Pro lineup.Under the hood, the entire iPhone 17 series is expected to be powered by Apple's upcoming A19 chip. The new processor could bring not only faster performance but also better battery efficiency. Apple may also introduce a vapour chamber-based cooling system to handle heat during demanding tasks like gaming or video editing.advertisementAll four models may come with Apple's new Wi-Fi 7 chip, which is designed to offer faster and more stable internet connectivity. The Pro and Air variants are also expected to get 12GB of RAM, while the base iPhone 17 might stick to 8GB.On the camera front, Apple seems to be working on a major upgrade for selfies. Reports suggest the iPhone 17 will include a 24MP front camera, doubling the resolution from the current 12MP shooter. The rear camera on the standard model is likely to feature a 48MP sensor, but features like telephoto zoom are expected to remain exclusive to the Pro models. There's also buzz around a mechanical aperture system for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which could help in capturing better low-light and daylight shots. While exact battery specifications are still under wraps, the inclusion of larger displays hints at bigger battery packs. Apple may also bump up the charging speed to 35W across the lineup — a slight improvement, though still behind some Android competitors. If Apple follows its usual pattern, press invites for the launch event could be sent out in the first week of September. Until then, more details about the iPhone 17 lineup are likely to surface online through leaks and analyst reports.- Ends

Intel cuts back spending, workforce as struggling chip maker eyes comeback

Intel Corp. is shedding thousands of workers and cutting expenses as its new CEO works to revive the fortunes of the struggling chipmaker that helped launch Silicon Valley but has fallen behind rivals like Nvidia Corp. In a memo to employees, CEO Lip-Bu Tan said Intel plans to end the year with 75,000 workers, down 31 per cent from 108,900 employees at the end of last year, through layoffs and attrition. The company previously announced a 15 per cent workforce reduction. I know the past few months have not been easy. We are making hard but necessary decisions to streamline the organization, drive greater efficiency and increase accountability at every level of the company, Tan wrote. In addition, Intel will scrap previously planned projects in Germany and Poland and also move assembly and test operations in Costa Rica to larger sites in Vietnam and Malaysia. Costa Rica will remain a home to key engineering teams and corporate functions, Tan said in the memo. In the US, the company said it will further slow construction of a semiconductor plant in Ohio. Founded in 1968 at the start of the PC revolution, Intel missed the technological shift to mobile computing triggered by Apple's 2007 release of the iPhone, and it's lagged more nimble chipmakers. Intel's troubles have been magnified since the advent of artificial intelligence a booming field where the chips made by once-smaller rival Nvidia have become tech's hottest commodity. The Santa Clara, California-based company's market cap was $98.71 billion as of the market close on Thursday, compared with Nvidia's $4.24 trillion.

Stop building in China, hiring in India, Trump warns tech majors

TOI CORRESPONDENT FROM WASHINGTON : US President and MAGA supremo Donald Trump issued an ominous warning on Wednesday to American tech companies operating overseas, asking them to prioritise hiring workers in the US rather than creating jobs in India and China. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In remarks at an Artificial Intelligence summit in New York, Trump called for an end to what he called "radical globalism", emphasising the need to shift to "a new spirit of patriotism and national loyalty in Silicon Valley & beyond" to help the US win the AI race. "Many of our largest tech companies have reaped the blessings of American freedom while building their factories in China, hiring workers in India, and slashing profits in Ireland... under President Trump, those days are over," he said, striking at the heart of the tech industry's global operations. His remarks came weeks after he explicitly asked Apple and Tesla to reel back on manufacturing in India. 'America started AI race & it will win it' Trump's remarks came weeks after he explicitly asked Apple and Tesla to reel back on manufacturing in India while at the same time tightening the screws on trade with New Delhi, arguing that the US was being ripped off by high tariffs. Although the focus of Trump's engagement on Wednesday was AI, he made it clear he expected all US companies to abandon hiring overseas in spirit of nationalism. "America is the country that started the AI race - and as President of the US, I'm here today to declare that America is going to WIN it," Trump said, following up his remarks by signing three executive orders to ramp up spending on AI. Trump's AI gambit came after months of frenetic activity bordering on panic in the US after China's remarkable advances that many experts said would result in it leapfrogging America. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As comparisons were made to the "Sputnik moment" when the US was galvanised by former Soviet Union briefly overtaking US in space race, Trump pledged he would never allow that to happen. Trump's screed against globalisation was largely received with a shrug in tech circles, where globalisation is considered irreversible given the complex supply chain logistics that span the world. Tech companies such as Google, Microsoft and IBM, all of which currently have India-born CEOs, not only have big operations in India, but also see India as a huge market. According to American Chamber of Commerce in India, US companies have created "gainful engagement for more than 5 million people" in India. As of 2024, there were approximately 1,800 offshore corporate offices in India, a majority of them American, employing almost two million people. Major players like IBM, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Dell maintain large workforces in India, tapping into talent and skill sets that are in short supply in the US despite claims to the contrary.
