D.C. United records its first shutout in almost a year but settles for a draw

Washington Post16-03-2025

D.C. United's 0-0 draw with CF Montreal on Saturday night at Audi Field was hardly the performance or result Coach Troy Lesesne wanted, but amid the bland affair came a bright revelation: a shutout.
United had not held an opponent scoreless in almost a year, a span of 31 matches. Its previous clean sheet was also against Montreal and also at home.
Kim Joon Hong, a 21-year-old goalkeeper in his first MLS season, was not placed under a lot of pressure but managed the penalty area well, saw two threats hit the goal frame and received a solid defensive effort from his teammates. It was marked improvement for a team that conceded 70 goals in 34 games last season, third worst in the league and the second most in club history.
D.C.'s attack, though, did not click, failing to replicate the two-goal performances in each of its first three matches. The closest United (1-0-3) came was Christian Benteke's disallowed goal in the first half, the result of video replay.
Three of United's first four matches have been at home, yet it has earned just five of a possible nine points in those games.
The same D.C. lineup that produced a 2-1 victory over visiting Sporting Kansas City last weekend took the field against a Montreal team (0-3-1) playing the fourth of seven consecutive away matches to start the season until the weather warms in Quebec.
United was a little loose defensively in the first half. Montreal's Fabian Herbers was given ample space in the 13th minute for a 25-yard shot that hit the base of the left post. Moments later, United midfielder Boris Enow made a critical challenge to disrupt Jules-Anthony Vilsaint's 12-yard threat. Herbers's misfortune continued in the 26th minute, when his bid in transition skipped off the crossbar.
United — and the announced crowd of 16,133 — thought Benteke had shattered the deadlock a minute later, when he collected Jared Stroud's pass just inside the penalty area and slid the ball past goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois. But video replay showed Benteke pushing the ball with his right hand; after checking the monitor, referee Guido Gonzales Jr. annulled the goal.
United's Brazilians, João Peglow and Gabriel Pirani, combined in the box late in the half, but after Peglow's no-look flick set up his countryman, Pirani lifted it wide of the near corner.
Early in the second half, David Schnegg's lovely chip set up the sliding Stroud in the six-yard box, but Sirois made a fine block.
Lesesne made his first changes in the 60th minute, replacing Enow and Hosei Kijima with Matti Peltola and Brandon Servania. One of Peltola's first touches was a sizzler from distance that streaked over the crossbar. In the 73rd, Jacob Murrell took Pirani's place.
Montreal had a grand opportunity in the 75th minute with a free kick at the edge of the box, but Kim was well-positioned to block Bryce Duke's bid, then thwarted Montreal's second chance.
Lesesne's last moves came in the 83rd minute, with Fidel Barajas making his debut after arriving on loan from Chivas Guadalajara and newcomer Rida Zouhir making his second appearance.
Here's what else to know about United's draw:
Because MLS does not usually pause for international windows, Peltola and starters Kye Rowles and Aaron Herrera will miss next Saturday's match at Orlando City (1-2-1).
Rowles will join Australia for 2026 World Cup qualifiers vs. Indonesia on Thursday and at China on March 25. Herrera was summoned by Guatemala for a two-leg Concacaf Gold Cup playoff against Guyana on Friday and March 25. Peltola's Finland will visit Malta on Friday and Lithuania on March 24 for World Cup qualifiers.
Forward Kristian Fletcher, who is on loan to Nottingham Forest in England, was called up for U.S. under-20 friendlies against Mexico and Japan in Spain.
Midfielder Randall Leal (thigh) missed his third consecutive match, and backup striker Dominique Badji was ruled out with an undisclosed minor ailment. Midfielder Jackson Hopkins (ankle), rookie winger Hakim Karamoko (sports hernia) and defender Conner Antley (knee) continue to recover. Antley seems closest to returning. ...
Montreal was missing designated player Giacomo Vrioni (groin), who has yet to play this year, and captain Samuel Piette (hamstring), sidelined since the opener. U.S. national team prospect Jalen Neal (knee) remains out as well.

Viktor Gyokeres could join Man United to live near Erling Haaland

Manchester United target Viktor Gyokeres is likely to move to the Red Devils so he can live near Erling Haaland, it has been claimed. That's the view of musician Tom Grennan, who says he knows the Swedish striker well from his time playing for Coventry City, the club he supports. Advertisement Gyokeres is right at the top of United manager Ruben Amorim's wishlist for the summer transfer window after bagging over 50 goals last season and 43 the year before under his tutelage for Sporting CP. For comparison United's current squad managed only 44 league goals between them last season, so it's little wonder the Portuguese boss is looking at a reunion with his prize striker from his time in Lisbon. The 27-year-old is said to be furious that Sporting CP reneged on the gentleman's agreement to let him leave the club for less than the €80m they are now demanding, and has even told them he will never play for them again as a result. With his future seemingly away from Portugal, United are a distinct possibility for his next destination, especially with Arsenal's priority striker signing now looking like RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. Advertisement And according to Grennan, Gyokeres will be delighted with a move to Manchester as he can live next door to his best friend, Manchester City striker Haaland. The musician told the BBC podcast You About?, via the Daily Mirror: 'I know him well. I actually messaged him and he said that there's different conversations going on. 'Do you know who his best friend is? Haaland. That is why I think he'll go to Manchester United because he'll be next door to Haaland.' Should he end up becoming a Red Devil, the Old Trafford faithful will be hoping he emulates the towering Norwegian's performances in England where he has 121 goals in 142 matches for City. Advertisement Since missing out on Haaland things haven't quite worked out for United's reinforcements at centre-forward, with Rasmus Hojlund the highest-profile arrival in that position. After a dismal campaign saw him on the scoresheet in the Premier League just four times, he may be set for a summer move to Inter Milan as Amorim looks for reliable goals up front. Montreal Alouettes aiming to continue their winning ways versus Ottawa Redblacks

There has been no place quite like TD Place for the Montreal Alouettes. Montreal (1-0) visits the Ottawa Redblacks (0-1) on Friday night. The Alouettes have not only won their last eight head-to-head meetings with their East Division rival but are riding a 10-game win streak at TD Place. And there's the matter of Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander sporting a 5-0 record as a CFL starter. Bo Levi Mitchell, currently of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, was the last quarterback to start 5-0 when he was with the Calgary Stampeders. Alexander, in his first full season as Montreal's starter, was 19-of-26 passing for 205 yards with a touchdown and interception in last week's season-opening 28-10 home win over Toronto. He also ran four times for 50 yards. Montreal converted on 14-of-24 second-down opportunities while rushing for 163 yards on 26 carries (6.3-yard average). That's noteworthy as last week all four opening-week winners were not only at home but also rushed for more yards than their opponents. A stout Montreal defence did its part, holding Toronto to 276 net offensive yards while forcing three turnovers (two interceptions, fumble recovery) in the contest. Ottawa opened its season with a 31-26 road loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Redblacks quarterback Dru Brown threw for 413 yards and two touchdowns, becoming just the fourth player ever to have 400 or more yards passing in three straight regular-season games, dating back to 2024. Brown is the first to do so since Calgary's Doug Flutie in '93 but has been limited in practice this week with a hip ailment. Justin Hardy (eight catches, 133 yards, TD) and Bralon Addison (eight catches, 112 yards) were Brown's favourite targets. Veteran Eugene Lewis had five receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown in his first game with the Redblacks. Lewis has recorded TD grabs in nine straight games dating back to last season with Edmonton. If he can do so versus Montreal, Lewis would tie Terry Evanshen's CFL record of 10 consecutive contests with a touchdown reception. Ottawa was a CFL-best 7-1-1 last season at TD Place. Pick: Montreal. —- B.C. Lions versus Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Thursday night) At Winnipeg, the Bombers open their season minus starter Zach Collaros, who will serve the one-game suspension he received last month from the CFL for failing to respond to an off-season drug-testing request. Veteran QB Chris Streveler starts but guard Pat Neufeld remains a game-time decision. Nathan Rourke was the league's offensive player of the week after passing for 324 yards and three TDs in leading B.C. (1-0) past Edmonton 31-14 but he's 0-3 lifetime versus the Bombers with three TDs and five interceptions. Lions head coach Buck Pierce returns to Manitoba, where he spent 10 seasons as an assistant and won two Grey Cups before being hired by B.C. Pick: B.C. —- Calgary Stampeders versus Toronto Argonauts (Saturday afternoon) At Toronto, the Argos (0-1) are 27-7 at BMO Field under head coach Ryan Dinwiddie, including 16-2 the past two seasons. But Calgary (1-0) is the only team Dinwiddie has a losing record against (3-4) and Stamps head coach/GM Dave Dickenson is 12-3 all-time versus the defending champions. Nick Arbuckle is expected to make a second straight start for Toronto ahead of Chad Kelly (leg). Stamps' starter Vernon Adams Jr. is 2-5 versus the Argos but has 14 TD passes in those matchups. He threw for 284 yards in last week's 38-26 home win over Hamilton with two interceptions. Pick: Toronto. —- Saskatchewan Roughriders versus Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Saturday night) At Hamilton, Mitchell again chases his 100th career regular-season win. He was 31-of-50 passing for 304 yards and a TD last week in Calgary. Over his last six starts, Mitchell is averaging 346 yards passing and is 12-6 versus the Riders. But last week the Ticats defence had no answer for the Stampeders' ground game (158 yards on 31 carries, three Dedrick Mills' TDs). Trevor Harris threw for 277 yards and two TDs in leading Saskatchewan (1-0) past Ottawa last week and is 9-5 versus Hamilton. This week, the club signed veteran running back Ka'Deem Carey, who ran for 1,060 yards last season with Toronto before surprisingly being released after training camp. Pick: Saskatchewan. NOTE — Last week's B.C.-Edmonton game marked just the 12th time in 5,395 CFL games that both teams started Canadian quarterbacks (Rourke for the Lions, Tre Ford for Elks). Last week: 3-1. Anti-doping watchdog urges US authorities to shut down planned drug-fueled event in Las Vegas

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The global watchdog of doping in sports said Wednesday it will urge public authorities to shut down the drug-fueled Enhanced Games planned in Las Vegas next year. 'We will urge the U.S. authorities to find legal ways to block this initiative,' World Anti-Doping Agency president Witold Banka said on the sidelines of a meeting of Olympic sports bodies. Organizers of the games scheduled for next May promise $1 million bonuses to beat world-record times by athletes who will be encouraged to use performance-enhancing drugs under medical supervision. 'This initiative seeks to normalize the use of potentially dangerous drugs,' Banka told leaders of Summer Olympics sports at the annual meeting of their umbrella group, known as ASOIF. 'For the sake of athlete health and the purity of sport of course it must be stopped,' the WADA leader said. Banka, a former sports minister in Poland, suggested the Enhanced Games could be legally exposed in the state of Nevada or federally. 'This is something that has to be explored from the legal perspective,' he told The Associated Press. 'I cannot imagine, for instance, doctors giving the drugs to the athletes. It is completely against the values of their work.' 'The main thing is this event is going to be located in the U.S., so I think there is a strong role to be played by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency,' said Banka, whose Montreal-based organization has long had a troubled relationship with the American agency. Said USADA's chief executive, Travis Tygart: 'Banka's indignation equals his misinformation or ignorance about how free democratic societies and markets work.' He challenged Banka to testify at a U.S. Senate hearing next week at which WADA will be the topic. 'If he really wants to ask U.S. authorities to do something, he should show up and ask the Senate to do something,' Tygart said. Investors in the project — which aims to sell personalized supplements and substances plans to subscribers — include one group backed by Donald Trump Jr. The doping-backed project was 'very embarrassing' for the U.S., Banka suggested, given its proximity to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Swimming's governing body, World Aquatics, said last week it will ban athletes, coaches and officials who take part in the Enhanced Games. ___ AP sports:
