Wind energy centre of Atma Nirbhar Bharat: India becomes 3rd largest maker of renewable energy; wind capacity hits 51.5 GW in a decade
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Bengaluru, he said India needs reliable energy, from wind, solar or other sources, to become a global manufacturing hub.
"Wind energy is not a component of our renewable energy strategy, but it is at the heart of it and at the centre of Atma Nirbhar Bharat," he said.
The minister said that India has achieved 51.5 GW of wind capacity, marking a 150% increase over the last decade, and is now exporting turbines and components globally.
The country has set its sights on 100 GW of wind energy by 2030, including 30 GW from offshore projects, 'backed by strong policy reforms and a robust manufacturing ecosystem.'
The minister said India has set clear and ambitious goals — to get 50% of its power from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 and to become net-zero by 2070. He stressed that wind energy is not just a part of the country's renewable strategy, but lies at its core and is key to building an Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

He also underlined the three issues the sector must now tackle: integrating wind with solar and storage for round-the-clock power, reducing tariffs from the current Rs 3.90 per unit, and boosting manufacturing efficiency to compete globally.
Highlighting PM Modi's vision, Joshi said the goal is to use renewable energy to power India's manufacturing sector, while conventional energy continues to meet household needs.
India is currently the world's fourth-largest country in installed wind power capacity and the third-largest renewable energy producer overall. India's manufacturing capacity is increasing, and it will continue to rise.
"No one had thought that India would become the third largest manufacturer of renewable energy in 10 years, but today it is a reality," said the minister.
To unlock the full potential of the wind sector, Joshi outlined five focus areas: expanding into new states like Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha; launching the offshore wind sector with leasing areas in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu; integrating wind with storage for firm green power; modernising the grid using AI-based forecasting; and strengthening local manufacturing across the wind value chain.
Joshi also released two key reports, the Wind Energy Roadmap and Manufacturing Roadmap, to serve as frameworks for India's clean energy journey.
'These documents reflect our strategic vision and our collective resolve to build a strong, self-reliant wind ecosystem,' he said.
The event also saw the recognition of top-performing states in wind capacity addition: Karnataka led with 1,331.48 MW, followed by Tamil Nadu (1,136.37 MW) and Gujarat (954.76 MW).
Union minister of state for new and renewable energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, and Karnataka's energy minister, KG George, were also present at the event.
India's wind ambitions align with its global climate commitments, including the five-point 'Panchamrit' pledge made at COP26 in Glasgow. These include reaching 500 GW of non-fossil capacity, cutting emissions by 1 billion tonnes, and reducing emissions intensity by 45%, all by 2030.

Nod to Rs 8.3K cr Bhubaneswar Bypass
NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved two mega infrastructure projects, including one for Odisha and another for Rajasthan, with cumulative estimated cost of over `9,500 crore. Briefing media after the meeting of the CCEA, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the construction of a 6-lane access-controlled Capital Region Ring Road (Bhubaneswar Bypass) in Odisha with an estimated cost of Rs 8,307.74 crore has been approved. The nod has also been given to the construction of green-field Kota-Bundi airport in Rajasthan with a total estimated capital investment of Rs 1,507 crore, he added. The Minister said, the length of the ring road project for the twin capital city of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack would be 110.875 km and it would be developed on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). 'At present, the Rameshwar -Tangi stretch of the existing National Highway faces severe congestion due to heavy traffic moving through urban centres like Khordha, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack. The new Greenfield ring road aims to divert heavy commercial vehicles away from these cities, thereby improving freight efficiency, reducing logistics costs, and promoting socio-economic development in Odisha and neighbouring eastern states,' Vaishnaw said. The alignment will integrate with three National Highways (NH-55, NH-57, NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65), offering seamless connectivity to economic and social hubs across the region, he said.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday thanked the Centre for approving the Rs 8,307.74 crore Capital Region Ring Road project, calling it a landmark infrastructure initiative that will decongest major urban centres and boost the economy. He said the project will also enhance logistics efficiency and open new avenues for economic growth and prosperity in Odisha and the eastern region. 'I extend my sincere gratitude to Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and Hon'ble Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Shri @nitin_gadkari ji for according approval to the construction of the 6-Lane Access-Controlled Capital Region Ring Road (Bhubaneswar Bypass – 110.875 km) in Odisha at a total cost of Rs 8,307.74 crore,' Majhi posted on X. In a post on X, Modi said, 'Congratulations to the people of Odisha, especially Bhubaneswar and surrounding areas, on Cabinet decision regarding a vital infra project cleared today, which will ease congestion and boost 'Ease of Living''. Currently, connectivity between Rameswar to Tangi on existing National Highway, experiences significant congestion due to high traffic volumes, passing through densely urbanised cities Khurda, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. To address these challenges, the project is proposed to be developed as 6-Lane Access-Controlled Greenfield Highway.. Stating that the project will provide significant benefit to Odisha and other eastern States by diverting heavy commercial traffic away from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Khurda, an official said this will enhance the efficiency of freight movement, reducing logistics cost and driving socio-economic growth in the region. The project alignment integrates with three major national highways (NH-55, NH-57 and NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65), providing seamless connectivity to key economic, social and logistics nodes across Odisha, the official added. Additionally, the upgraded corridor will enhance multi-modal integration by connecting with 10 economic nodes, four social nodes and five logistic nodes, providing enhanced multimodality with a major railway station, an airport, one proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), and two major ports thereby facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers across the region. As estimated, the project will generate approximately 74.43 lakh person-days of direct and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment.

3-year jail, ₹1 Cr fine: Modi Govt set to ban online games played with money; bill likely in Parliament today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government is all set to ban online games played with money. A proposed bill will be moved in the Lok Sabha today. If passed in Parliament, the move would strike a heavy blow to an industry that has attracted billions of dollars of foreign investment, according to news agency Reuters. The Bill – 'Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025' – cites psychological and financial harm which can be caused by such games and says that no person "shall offer, aid, abet, induce or otherwise indulge or engage in" the offering of online money games and such services. The proposed law, cleared by the Union Cabinet, would mean a blanket ban on all online real-money gaming services, where users can play games after depositing money in the form of a stake or a wager. According to reports, the move comes owing to growing concerns about alleged money laundering through these services. The 13-page bill drafted by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)describes an online money game as one played by a user who deposits money in expectation of winning monetary and other enrichment, the news agency said. The Indian market for such gaming is set to be worth $3.6 billion by 2029, venture capital firm Lumikai says. Endorsements by celebrities from cricket and Bollywood and other marketing efforts have boosted the appeal and investor interest of real money gaming apps. In a letter to the Union Home Ministry this week, major gaming industry bodies said that the blanket ban would strike a 'death knell' for the legitimate, job-creating industry. The government will prohibit any person from offering online real-money games, and failing to comply will result in a prison term of up to three years and a penalty of ₹ 1 crore. Those promoting such platforms, including social media influencers , could also face a prison term of two years and a penalty of ₹ 50 Lakh "Such games often use manipulative design features, addictive algorithms ... while promoting compulsive behaviour leading to financial ruin," the bill said. The government, however, views competitive e-sports and game development as a crucial driver of the online gaming industry and is keen to promote them via the proposed law, Indian Express said in a report.
