Pick your Brighton player of the season
Carlos BalebaCombines the best bits of Yves Bissouma and Moises Caicedo to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. Breaks up attacks. Scores last-minute winners from 35 yards. Even picked up man of the match the first time in his life playing a competitive game at centre-back.Kaoru MitomaIt seems to have gone a little under the radar that Mitoma is on for his most prolific campaign in England. He also rejected the Saudi Pro League in January because he wants to play at the highest level possible rather than line his pockets. Can we have an award for moralistic player of the season?Jan Paul van HeckeVan Hecke has been the one constant at the heart of the defence this season. Rattled through more partners than Henry VIII had wives, yet nothing has fazed him. Will surely succeed Lewis Dunk as captain... presuming he breaks the curse of not leaving within months of winning the club's official player of the year award.Danny WelbeckWelbeck has scored 10 times so far – the same as Mitoma and Joao Pedro. But what makes him a contender for player of the season is how important his goals have been in terms of deciding games. Take them away and the Albion have 10 fewer points, sitting 13th in the table.Honourable mentionAdam Webster came into the starting XI after the 7-0 shambles at the City Ground only because of injuries to every other centre-back. Brighton won six and drew two of their next eight games. When Webster was then injured himself, the Albion's form collapsed. Coincidence? I think not.Pick your 2024-25 Brighton player of the season from our shortlist hereAnd tell us why you're picking who you are, or why you'd have gone for another player not on the list, here

Ethan Ampadu injury blow for Leeds
Head coach Daniel Farke confirmed Ampadu has damaged a medial collateral ligament in a knee and will miss Saturday's Premier League game at Arsenal and the following two matches. Ampadu was outstanding in Leeds' opening win against Everton at Elland Road on Monday before being hurt in a second-half challenge from Tim Iroegbunam, which later forced the Wales midfielder off. Farke said: 'It's bad news with him sadly. The next (few) games we have to play without him. 'MCL injury, he will definitely be out until at least the international break. I hope to have him back the other side of the international break. He's pretty quick after injury back on the training pitch. 'He's a tough boy. It's a blow for us, we will miss him in the upcoming games at least and the two upcoming Premier League games and the cup game.' After this weekend's trip to the capital, Leeds play at Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday and then face Newcastle at Elland Road a week on Saturday. 🔥 Noah Okafor is Leeds! — Leeds United (@LUFC) August 21, 2025 Farke said Switzerland winger Noah Okafor is in contention for his Leeds debut at the Emirates Stadium after completing his move from AC Milan earlier on Thursday for a fee which could rise to £18million. Okafor, who spent the latter part of last season on loan at Serie A champions Napoli, is Leeds' ninth summer signing following promotion to the Premier League. Farke added: 'He has really good pace, he's a really good dribbler, really good on the offensive one-on-one. 'A strong player as well. I don't want to pressure him too much because he's not played one game, so I'll let him deliver before, but from his skills, he has more or less everything to impress, and it's up to him.' Okafor's arrival is expected to end Leeds' interest in Tottenham winger Manor Solomon, who played a starring role for Daniel Farke's Championship-winning side on loan last season. Leeds have now spent around £92million in total on new players since ending their two-year top-flight absence. Farke, who also wants to add a full-back to his squad, said he was still hoping to further boost his attacking options before the transfer window closes on September 1. Okafor, who began his professional career at Basel, scored 34 goals and made 23 assists in 110 appearances for Salzburg before joining AC Milan in a £13.4m deal in July 2023. He scored seven goals and made five assists in two seasons at the Serie A club, which included his four-month loan spell at Napoli, and has 24 caps for Switzerland.

Jeremie Frimpong ruled out until after international break... but it could have been worse
Liverpool's new signing Jeremie Frimpong will miss the next month with a hamstring injury, leaving manager Arne Slot with a defensive headache ahead of Monday's showdown with Newcastle United. Frimpong suffered the setback in last Friday's 4-2 win over Bournemouth, with Slot confirming he will not be absent until at least September 14. 'The medical team were completely right about Jeremie to tell me that I had to take him off because he is out until the end of the international break, and that happened during the game,' Slot said. 'I think I got criticised a bit for taking him off, didn't I? I've already said it had nothing to do with how he played, but we felt he had an issue with his hamstring and by we, I mean the medical staff. 'They were completely right. It was a good call to take him off otherwise he maybe would have been out for longer. We expect to have him back after the international break.' Conor Bradley, who would have started the season at right-back but for his own hamstring issue, has returned to training. It is a big call to thrust him straight into the line-up at St James' Park, but Slot is short of recognised options in the position. He says he will consider using a midfielder in the role if necessary. Joe Gomez finished the opening game in a position he knows well, but Slot admitted he too is short of the necessary fitness to play 90 minutes. 'Conor trained for a few minutes with us today [Thursday] for the first time [since his injury],' Slot said. 'At the moment we only have two injuries but unfortunately, it is two in the same position. The good thing is we have other players that can play there. Wataru [Endo] played there for a few minutes, Dominik Szoboszlai has already played there. There are other options we can explore. 'Joe Gomez is definitely one of them, but for him to already play 20 minutes – that is already quite a lot. 'I wouldn't say he has had a setback, but he wasn't able to train three days in a row completely with the team, which is completely normal when you have been out for so long, and all of a sudden the manager needs you for 20 minutes. 'He is training with the team, so let's see where he is on Monday, if he can be involved with the team or even start. But there are other options. 'You cannot prepare for two injuries in one position. It would be stupid for us to have three, four right-backs and five left-backs –although we have three left-backs at the moment! We are unlucky the right-backs are injured.'
