Scotland's 'best local restaurants' crowned by Good Food Guide as wine bar tops list

13 eateries across the country were singled out.
Scotland's "best local restaurants" for 2025 have been named. A wine bar and restaurant in a small town was crowned the best in the country.

On Tuesday, July 15, The Good Food Guide shared its list of the top local eateries across the UK. The list celebrates the nation's best independently-run restaurants and is decided upon by a team of judges.

Topping the list as the best local restaurant in Scotland is Redwood Wines in the Perthshire town of Dunkeld. The wine shop and restaurant offers seasonal small plates, with everything made in-house by hand.

Redwood Wines has a weekly changing menu influenced by classic wine bar dishes. Among the food on offer is aged Aberdeen Angus roast beef sandwich, handkerchief pasta, and a charcuterie and cheese board.
Owners Roseanna and Morgwn Preston-Jones commented: "We are truly honoured to be recognised by The Good Food Guide.
"We pour our heart and soul into every aspect of Redwood and sharing that passion for food and wine fills us with great joy. We love Dunkeld, our loyal customers and visitors alike."
Elsewhere, five Edinburgh restaurants are featured in The Good Food Guide's list of the top local restaurants in Scotland.
Barry Fish in Leith, Fin and Grape on Colinton Road, Leftfield on Barclay Terrace, Pomelo on Sciennes Road, and The Palmerston on Palmerston Place are all included on the roundup.

Barry Fish is a recently opened independent fish restaurant that serves up everything from small plates to larger mains. Options include whole lemon sole, barbecued monkfish brochettes, and shrimp and sea trout sausage rolls.
Like Barry Fish, Fin and Grape specialises in fish and sharing plates. Customers can enjoy salt cod mousse, pickled mussels, Calabrian anchovies, and more.

Leftfield is a neighbourhood bistro with a particular focus on seafood. Dishes on the restaurant's sample menu include sea trout, Gigha oysters, and hand dived scallop.
Pomelo is a Chinese-focused Asian fusion restaurant that offers brunch, lunch, and dinner. Its menus change regularly, but among the dishes on offer are fried chicken sandwich, scallop carpaccio, and roasted duck.

Finally, The Palmerston is a traditional restaurant and bakery with a varied daily-changing menu. Customers can order dishes such as baked Berkshire pork shoulder, slow roast Shetland lamb, and fish stew.
Additionally, The Free Company in the village of Balerno on the outskirts of Edinburgh is named on the roundup. The Free Company is a farm-to-restaurant venue, with a seasonal à la carte menu based on what is available on the farm.
Elsewhere, Gloriosa in Glasgow is also featured on The Good Food Guide's list. Gloriosa serves up Mediterranean-style food, as well as a wide selection of wines.

The only other city restaurant included on the roundup is Mara in Aberdeen. It is a wine bar and bottle shop with Italian-influenced small plates.
Other local restaurants to be named as the best in Scotland include The Dory Bistro in Pittenweem and The Gordon Arms in Selkirk. Rounding out the The Good Food Guide's list are The Whitehouse in Lochaline and Tide and Thyme in Tighnabruaich.

"Or there is The Majestic Garden, a beautiful outdoor bar tucked behind a shopping mall restaurant, as well as the Quinary, named one of the best bars in Asia. Rated restaurant Luk Yu Tea House is a dining institution in Hong Kong - and the food is so good, we're not surprised it's made it into the Michelin Guide. Spread across colonial-era three floors, you can expect to tuck into classic Chinese flavours including crispy deep-fried chicken and sliced beef brisket noodles. Credit: Google Best bar As the World's 50 Best Bars heads to Hong Kong for 2025 at the revamped Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, Bar Leone is looking to beat off the competition to retain its title from 2024. This casual Italian-themed bar, founded by an awardwinning Italian mixologist, is famed for having mastered the classic cocktails, all of which come at a reasonable price. Make sure to try the bar snacks while you're here, from mortadella foccacia to smoked olives. Hotel pick If you're after something a little different, look no further than Noah's Ark Hotel and Resort. The quirky hotel was built as a full-scale replica of Noah's Ark, complete with animals walking two-by-two from the dock on to dry land. The rooms inside are less funky, kitted out with comfy bedding and simple wooden-panelled walls. It's a great spot for families or groups, too, with four-person bunk rooms as well as rooms with two queen-sized beds. To be fair, I was a massive fan of LEGO when I was wee, back when it was just simple bricks you bashed together to make unrecognisable approximations of things I loved, like planes and boats. As I grew up and LEGO morphed into a confusing array of theme parks and special ranges – from LEGO Friends and the Asian-themed Ninjago – I lost sight of LEGO as my two daughters grew into it. It was not something at 53 I thought I would take any pleasure re-visiting. READ MORE: Scottish transport company acquires historic English bus firm I thought my honesty with Kathrine would fall on deaf ears. Far from it. 'We too realised we had to simplify things and get back to the core of what this family-run business does,' she beams as she brews me a proper coffee in LEGO House's café – it's always a great sign when a managing director chips in. 'We got back to basics, selling off the theme parks and focusing back on the brick. Again, it's all about the brick.' It is all about the brick in Billund – the self-styled 'Capital of Children' – as we find out when we fly into the airport and see the immediate image of LEGO. Billund is still home to LEGO's headquarters and lives and breathes LEGO, nowhere more so than LEGO House (below), which has been a roaring success since opening in 2017. LEGO House is the single biggest investment by LEGO in years and took a year and a half to build, with 20 million LEGO bricks woven into the structure. I love that the vast reception is free for anyone to enter and play in. And that numbers are strictly limited beyond the ticket barriers to the upper floors so that families can really enjoy themselves without feeling rushed or overcrowded. The focus is indeed back on the brick, with building using LEGO paramount over fancy themed kits. For a family attraction to work, it has to engage everyone; LEGO House does. My daughters delight in building wee boats and buses, taking photos that are recorded on their bracelets, negating the 'need' for my teenagers to walk around with their phones. Indeed, they soon ask us to store their phones while they throw themselves into the action, peeling back the years. Priceless. We bond over family portraits made of LEGO, but they also skip off happily on their own with none of the bickering that can accompany visits to family attractions. And my wife and I don't just slump in a café either, making what is, of course, deemed an 'embarrassing' LEGO movie about how we met and married. As we move from yellow zone to red, to green and to blue, my cynicism slowly dissolves. My own journey is complete in the basement museum, which catapults me back to my childhood. Not ones to stand on their hard-won plastic laurels, Kathrine shows me into the 'Masters Academy'. 'LEGO House already has 20 million LEGO bricks and soon it will have another five million more,' she explains. It doesn't open until September, but the limited slots are getting snapped up fast at this new year-round attraction. It looks like a TV show and will have two actors leading just 40 guests through the weird and wonderful world of becoming a 'LEGO Master'. Often restaurants at theme parks are just refuelling stops bathed in grease. Not so at LEGO House with Mini Chef. Kathrine insists they 'serve proper food'. She is right, just that it is served by robots. The delightful Robert and Roberta dispense our lunchboxes. We choose our meals – mine is falafel followed by a delicious cauliflower curry – on the screen at our table then insert our orders – built, of course, in LEGO. Kathrine insists there will only ever be one LEGO House, but there are 11 LEGOLAND theme parks globally. The original, of course, is in Billund. LEGOLAND may no longer be owned by LEGO, but the second-biggest tourist attraction in Denmark outside Copenhagen swirls around the brick. We spend a whole day at LEGOLAND. Again, it proves, for me, surprisingly enjoyable. The Billund incarnation is much more laidback than the frenetic Windsor one. My teens enjoy bashing around rides that may not have the adrenaline wows of Florida's parks, but are fun for us all to share together. If you're visiting the LEGO House, a visit to the adjacent theme park remains essential. For busier times, they have an efficient fast-track system too – 'Reserve and Ride'. Heading home, I'd expected the kids would be sated with LEGO. Instead Tara is gleaming with the LEGO kit she bought by the designer who was casually signing boxes in the LEGO House, and Emma insists the first thing she is going to do when she gets home is get out her LEGO. We are going to the Dubai Mall, the world's biggest shopping centre, and the towering Burj Khalifa, the tallest (of course) building in the world, soaring 828 metres in the air. That's almost three times the height of London's Shard. The lifts at Burj Khalifa — naturally, the fastest in the world — speed up to the observation deck on the 125th floor in just 60 seconds. What Ali fails to tell us is that getting to the lifts means enduring the slowest queue in the world. It took us a frustrating 90 minutes of shuffling and waiting from one queue to another but, once at the top, you're in selfie heaven. We're in Dubai with Celestyal, a charmingly Greek cruise line that spends summers in Greece and Croatia and winters hobnobbing with the rich and, well, really rich, on one-week voyages around the Arabian Gulf. The cruise starts in Doha, the capital of Qatar, where money can buy you everything — including a room in a super-luxury hotel that towers into the sky and is shaped like a crescent. Our ship, Celestyal Journey, isn't quite so swanky, but way better value, with a week from just £539pp — not much more than a night in the fancy Doha hotel. But where that doesn't even get breakfast thrown in, on board our ship three meals a day are included. So is wifi (and you can also splash out on dinner in the speciality Asian or steak restaurant, which come at an extra charge). Martin Lewis warns about strict passport rule that could see you board your flight - only to get sent home on arrival If you fancy staying in a fab Grand Dream Suite, one of the fanciest staterooms on board, which comes with spacious living area, a sofa bed (on top of the large double bed) and balcony, it's £1,380pp more. It also comes with perks, including free access to an exclusive restaurant and the spa's thermal suite as well as priority check-in. If you can tear yourself away from the room, there's a pool upstairs and numerous bars downstairs with non-stop live music every evening. Our favourite is Spirits & Ales, where barman JD and his team always have smiles on their faces and tricks up their sleeves. Literally. They not only pull a mean pint, but also wow us with a close-up magic show one evening. From Doha we cruise to Dubai, where we're staying overnight so we can go 4x4-ing in the desert on one of several shore excursions offered by the cruise line. It's a thrilling rollercoaster of a ride as our driver revs up, down and along the shifting sands at angles you don't want to think about. Liberal beach culture 'I've never tipped one over,' our driver promises as the jeep suddenly tilts sideways, resulting in a shower of sand. The scary stuff over, we're then wined and dined under the stars, our mouths feasting on local dishes while our eyes feast on entertainment in the form of a fire juggler and whirling dervishes who go into a trance-like state and twirl around and around for at least ten minutes without falling over. It's one of those don't-try-this-at-home moments. And very different to our next stop, Sir Bani Yas Island, a wildlife reserve off the shores of Abu Dhabi. Just 50 years ago, the island was deserted. But today it is home to millions of plants and trees, thousands of animals and 300 rangers to look after it all. It is also a mecca for cruise ships sailing the Arabian Gulf for the more liberal beach culture than on the mainland — bikinis! — and open-truck wildlife safaris. 6 Entertainment includes impressive magic shows 6 Souq up the atmosphere at a traditional market in Bahrain Credit: Getty 6 Celestyal offers a seven-night Desert Days cruise round-trip from Doha and visiting Dubai, Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain Credit: supplied It's not up there with Africa (no lions, tigers or buffalo) but there are two cheetahs, loads of deer, gazelles, Barbary sheep from Morocco, cranes from Uganda, African Oryx and even 41 giraffes. It's a welcome respite after the excesses of Dubai, but things ramp up a gear again — literally — in Abu Dhabi with trips to Yas Marina F1 circuit, theme parks and SeaWorld. Or you can go for a cultural overdose at the Louvre (Abu Dhabi has its own version of the French museum) or the shiny Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which glows spectacularly white in the sun. In Bahrain, our final stop before we return to Doha, a tour whisks us around a souk and fort, but my abiding memory is the mezze served for lunch. Plates of hummus, pitta bread, salad, kebabs, grilled sausages, chicken and more that just keep on coming. As does the wine. It's definitely the best mezze in the world (but shhh — don't tell Dubai).
