New Delhi: England captain Ben Stokes has revealed that even after there has been a lot of discussions over the absence of Former Indian Test captain Rohit Sharma, star batter Virat Kohli and mystery spinner Ravichandran Ashwin from the Indian lineup, it wouldn't make their replacements easy targets, as England gear up for a tough challenge against Shubman Gill's India.
Speaking on the day before of the series opener at Headingley, Ben Stokes said that the fanous Indian trio's replacements are no less threatening.
'A lot said about no Rohit, no Virat, no Ashwin. That doesn't mean whoever will replace them will be easier to bowl or bat against. Three massive names, done wonderful things for the country,' Stokes said while speaking at the pre-match press conference.
'Jasprit Bumrah is a fantastic bowler. He is going to be a threat, but focusing on one individual isn't what we are going to be doing. Exciting time for Indian cricket with the new leadership role for Shubman Gill,' Stokes added.
The England captain welcomed the return of experienced all-rounder Chris Woakes, looking forward to his team's unbeaten run with him under the current captaincy.
'Since Baz (Brendon McCullum) and I have been together, I don't think we have lost a game when Woakes played. Good to have him,' Stokes said.
'Headingley is generally the better cricket wicket overall. Let's see what the weather has in store,' Stokes added.
'To get to the WTC final, we need to win matches. That's what we need to focus on… the series ahead of us. If we win matches, we will reach the final. And if we get there, we will look to win that too,' Stokes said.

Neeraj Chopra At Paris Diamond League 2025: When And Where To Watch
Last Updated: Neeraj Chopra aims to set the record straight against Julian Weber at the Paris Diamond League 2025 on June 20 at Stade Sébastien Charléty. Neeraj Chopra stands the chance to set the record straight against Julian Weber at the Paris Diamond League 2025 to be held at the Stade Sébastien Charléty in France late at night on Friday, June 20. Neeraj's rematch versus Weber will be the biggest point of attraction for the fans after their exciting duel at two major events earlier this year. During the Doha Diamond League in May, Chopra broke a personal barrier, overcoming the 90m mark for the first time in his career with a valiant throw recorded at 90.23m. But Neeraj still finished runners-up after Weber, too, broke the 90m barrier, but with a throw of 91.06m that won him the Doha title. Weber again rained on Chopra's parade at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Chorzow by making a throw of 86.12m above his Indian rival's 84.14. Neeraj will be eyeing his first major title of the year by converting the recent runners-up finishes into a memorable championship triumph before the top rung of javelin throwers convene in Bengaluru on July 5 for the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic. Neeraj will be the only Indian competing at the Paris Diamond League, which also marks his return to the event for the first time since 2017. As is often the case in this era in javelin, the competition will be stiff. Apart from Weber, Neeraj will be challenged for supremacy by Olympic bronze medalist Anderson Peters of Grenada, along with Keshorn Walcott, Julius Yego, Luiz Mauricio da Silva and Andrian Mardare. Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem won't be present at the event. Remi Rougetet will be the local representative. When And Where will Neeraj Chopra's event at the Paris Diamond League 2025 be held? The Paris Diamond League 2025 will be held at the Stade Sébastien Charléty in France late at night on Friday, June 20. The Neeraj Chopra javelin event kicks off at 1:12 AM IST (subject to change). How can I watch Neeraj Chopra's event at the Paris Diamond League 2025? Indian viewers can watch the live telecast of the Neeraj Chopra javelin throw event at the Paris Diamond League on Network 18 channels, with Viacom18 holding the Indian broadcasting rights. The Paris Diamond League will be available for live streaming on the JioHotstar app. First Published: June 19, 2025, 23:35 IST

A new cycle: on A new-look Indian cricket squad
Less than a week after South Africa emerged triumphant in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), a new cycle has begun. Bangladesh is already in Sri Lanka, busy playing a Test, while a more high-profile series will commence once India takes on England at Headingley in Leeds from Friday. A new-look Indian squad under the stewardship of Shubman Gill will step out for duty while a clean break from the past has been implemented due to the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R. Ashwin, and the omission of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. A tour of the Old Blighty is never easy and that has been the case since 1932 when India made its Test debut at Lord's. Series triumphs were etched in 1971, 1986 and 2007, but otherwise it has been a tale of Indian batters floundering against swing under whimsical English skies. Even as India beat Australia in its backyard over the last decade despite the loss in the last encounter, England has remained a tough place to tour. However, cricket's spiritual home has also gifted some special Indian memories like B.S. Chandrasekhar's spells, the 1983 World Cup victory, Dilip Vengsarkar's three consecutive hundreds at Lord's, and the Test debuts of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, to name a few. A sense of a beginning is evident in cricket's birthplace and seen in that light, Gill and his men are in the right place. Ravindra Jadeja, K.L. Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Karun Nair, busy charting a comeback, constitute the seniors in a unit high on youth with even Gill being just 25. The Punjab star has to deliver on two counts, both as batter and skipper. A 35.05 average after 32 Tests does not reflect the quality innate in him. It is not just that the batting core has changed as even the slip-cordon will have new personnel, and the way Gill guides his outfit through this transition will determine how India will fare in the latest WTC cycle. Bumrah will remain the spearhead but with workload management being the key, he will not play all the five Tests at stake. His old ally Mohammed Shami will be missed but in Mohammed Siraj and others, Bumrah has a set of talented fellow pace bowlers. Squaring against them would be Ben Stokes and his men busy relishing home advantage with Joe Root being the lead anchor among their batters. In a challenging tour stretching all the way to August 4, Gill, in tandem with vice-captain Rishabh Pant, gets an opportunity to forge a fresh and strong Indian unit.

ENG vs IND, 1st Test: Shubman Gill-led India takes on England's inexperienced bowling attack in battle of the unknown
It is quite fashionable – and a bit of a truism too – to say that no team or player carries secrets anymore. Such is the speed at which information travels and so many are the opportunities to mingle – like in franchise T20 leagues – that every cricketer's every move is broken down, analysed threadbare and bespoke plans hatched. Yet, when England hosts India in the first of five Tests starting Friday at Headingley here, there is a fair sprinkling of the unknown. How will a new-look Indian batting order sans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma fare? How will an inexperienced English bowling attack perform? And how will a venue which has long been synonymous with swing and seam behave under hot conditions and forecast for very little rain. The chief among the intrigues for India is about who would bat at No. 3, with skipper Shubman Gill – who started his career up top and then became the designated No. 3 – confirmed to occupy the No. 4 position, a right of passage, following in the footsteps of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. B. Sai Sudharsan is spoken of highly, and Karun Nair has past experience of playing Tests, two seasons of county cricket for Northamptonshire and a 204 at No. 3 for India-A versus England Lions recently. The bowling, set to be led by the irresistible duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, will see a shuffle too. Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh lead the race for the third seamer's berth, and there is Akash Deep too. Prasidh can threaten the top half of the willow while Arshdeep brings a left-armer's variety and know-how of the Dukes ball, having played for county side Kent. ALSO READ | Reached out to Pataudi family to ensure his legacy will remain, says Sachin Tendulkar Who among all-rounders Nitish Reddy and Shardul Thakur, and tweaker Kuldeep Yadav play will indicate the Indian think tank's philosophy. Nitish can shore up the batting while Thakur offers a better chance of taking 20 scalps. With the turf expected to flatten progressively, the left-arm wrist spin of Kuldeep, which fetched up 19 wickets at 20.15 across four home Tests against England last year, can come in handy. England, in contrast, cannot boast of such riches. Captain Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes are seasoned men but Stokes has had a limited role as a bowler in recent times while Woakes was out of action for four months (ankle trouble) and has just two First Class games leading in. However, there is a familiar look to the batting. With Ollie Pope set for No. 3, it is near-certain that the home side will sport the same top-four of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Pope and local hero Joe Root as it had the last time it met India, in Dharamsala in March 2024. England would, however, like a different result, for back then, it lost the match by an innings and 64 runs, a result that secured India a 4-1 series win. Confidence can be gained from the fact that England has won each of the last five matches at Leeds going back seven years, including the innings-and-a-76-run victory over India in 2021. A continuation of this streak will only further whet the appetite of the average fan in these parts after the enthralling World Test Championship final that ushered in this summer's big-ticket action. The teams: India (from): Shubman Gill (capt.), Rishabh Pant (wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, K.L. Rahul, B. Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav and Harshit Rana. England (XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (capt.), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue and Shoaib Bashir. Match starts at 3.30 p.m. IST.
